The Lugosi portrait is now the property of uber-horror fan Kirk Hammett, guitarist for the band Metallica. I had the honor of visiting Hammett in his home when I interviewed him for Fangoria Magazine and saw the portrait. It gave me chills.

He was a theater actor first and foremost, and he was very proud of that. He had to take a hit to his pride after his life went downhill. Taking roles in Ed Wood films and such. He wasn't very proud of himself in the end. Sad story.

It is possible to have a heart attack from an overdose they deemed it a heart attack but if they had probably looked further they probably would have found out it could have been due to drugs or his heart just couldn't take it anymore from all the drug use who knows but that's what's been said here and there Ed wood caught him shooting up a couple of times and it makes me wonder if he continued using i Mean after all life was rough back then some people did get hooked on drugs a lot of them did not survive

Ed wood was delusional and seriously bad alcoholic who was also a transvestite...he basically used lugosi to get people to come see plan 9 from outer space he felt people would flock to see the movie if lugosi was In it he used the Baptist church to have financial backing to get the film made...he died of a massive heart attack at a friend's apartment with such a frightening look of terror on his face there's no question in my mind where he ended up and there are no air conditioners in hell...sorry Ed .

Yes, it's sad how Bela Lugosi's star declined, but he's still a legend and I'm happy to see how your channel treated him and others from the past with respect. Oh, and since you like Lugosi so much, I think you'd enjoy a mystery titled "Never Cross a Vampire" by Stuart Kaminsky. In it, private eye Toby Peters is hired by Lugosi. It's set in World War II Hollywood, and Lugosi, of course, plays a starring role. The Toby Peters series features stars such as Judy Garland in "Murder on the Yellow Brick Road," the Marx Brothers in "You Bet Your Life," Peter Lorre in "Think Fast, Mr. Peters," etc. I think you both would enjoy them.

You know , though, Ed Wood sort of made it look like Bela died completely alone. No wife. I’m glad that he was, in fact still married. The film sort of made it look like he died in a place where he was on the verge of eviction with his Chihuahuas. This, by the way, doesn’t make me feel any less about that film. I love it . It was the perfect storm of director, cast and story.

one of my biggest fears is dying alone. it's not so much someone not being there as much as just not having anyone to care given that i'm getting older, have heart problems, am single, and have no children. a friend of mine and i made a deal, she said if we don't have anyone when we're 70 we'll get married. i said okay, but amended that to 69 because, well, i'm a dude and that shit is still funny to me....

Grimm -- I admire you because you are young and yet know and care so much about Bela Lugosi (the man who defined Dracula!). Many guys your age know nothing -- and care not to know -- about an actor so distant from today. What's more, if bothering to watch Lugosi in "Dracula," likely they'd find it boring (no modern special effects) and un-frightening. Little do they know that Lugosi set the gold standard for every future Dracula film! At any rate, we know the importance of Lugosi and his monumental contribution to horror, Hollywood, and in particular the Dracula character. As noted, I truly appreciate your love of the man!

sure, it can be cruel. by the same token, we have to be objective and see things for what they are. a lot of these people lived fast lives full of excess, opulence, sex, drugs, alcohol, and reveled in the kind of adulation usually reserved for royalty. musicians and athletes often simply can't handle it all, either. it's a game where all the risks are laid out right on the poker table, plenty of cautionary tales to reference... and they ignore all that. sometimes it bit them in the ass -- with all the above and coupled with the fact that many of these people weren't exactly what you'd call the most stable personalities or responsible in practical matters, most of the tragic tales are a result of people being a victim of their own making, hoisted on their own petard (to borrow a line from edward de vere, er, i mean shakespeare, one that's pretty appropriate). in lugosi's case, he squandered a fortune and was no stranger to marriage, it was even mentioned he was married a whopping five times. one of those wives was a wealthy widow, i believe, but that marriage only lasted a couple of months because he was in love with clara bow, who had a nude painting made of her, supposedly from memory, that he kept until his death. just my opinion, of course, but his case is more sad than cruel.

Bela Lugosi was an amazing actor. I see you're in front of Ricardo Montalban Theater. I got to meet him at the Paramount Studios. I had joined the Pepsi Rollerskating Team that year, & my Agent was a guy that reminded me of Squiggy from Happy Days. I think his name was Larry Leverette. He wore an old style sports jacket with patches on the elbows. We were preparing for filming at a night club that was hosting an anniversary for the USO, with Audrey & Judy Landers. I talked with Audrey at the studio & again at the club. Audrey was filming an episode of Fantasy Island. My friend & I got to meet Catherine Bach, Herve Villachase & Ricardo. Herve was a major flirt that kept grabbing our legs & Ricardo was charming, polite, and smelled amazing. He was wearing Drakkar, he told me. We also saw Ralph Waite(Little House on the Prairie) the actor who played the Indian guy in One Flew Over the Cookoos Nest, & Jimmy Mcnichol. We got to see so many sets, including going onto the set of Dukes of Hazzard & stand next to the General Lee. Beautiful car.

Boone, but no one can simply admit to simple errors anymore and say something to the effect of "Whoops, my mistake, sorry.". Apologizing these days is like commiting a cardinal sin these days. Just ridiculous. I, on the other hand, have absolutely no problem admitting a simple error, because I realize that I'm not perfect. The world has sadly devolved from what it was, even 10 years ago. Fun fact. Lugosi's one of the first film roles was in a movie called "The Head of Janus" back in Germany. Sadly it is lost 😭. It was directed by F.W.Murnau. Murnau later directed the oldest surviving/known Dracula adaptation (unauthorised) called "Nosferatu. A symphony of horror". Quite a coincidence.

Those guys could scare the hell out of you with just one look! No make up effects, nothing else, that’s how good they were as actors! Vincent Price was part of that group, I miss those actors,, and their work. That’s why Elvira was so popular because she did show some of those movies.

In his native Hungary, Bela Lugosi played such roles as Romeo, Cyrano de Bergerac, and believe it or not, Jesus Christ. When World War I broke out, as an actor he was exempt from the draft, but he enlisted anyway and he was wounded. This wound developed into sciatica which was so painful it prevented him from acting. Only the pain killer morphine could alleviate the pain so he could do his job. Later on, he checked into rehab and kicked the habit. Lugosi didn't like the Hollywood film industry and said words to the effect that it chews you up and then spits you out. Many stage actors felt this way.

Bela Lugosi is a true horror icon. One of my favorite movies was Abbott and Costello Meets Frankenstein.

Just came across the channel Subbed. My home town of Dudley West Midlands England ,is where the Frankenstein director James Whale grew up in,and our 11th century castle is said to be his inspiration for Castle Frankenstein.

Lugosi was my fave scary dude when I was a kid. Interestingly, he was born in a part of Hungary that is now Romania. Since you like all things grim, check out the story of the bizarre death and partial cremation of Gram Parsons at Joshua Tree. The site of his death is The Joshua Tree Inn, where there is a memorial. The cremation site is inside the national park at Cap Rock. It's a great excuse to see some stunning scenery

Awe sad to know Bela Lagosti is not around he definitely did an amazing job as the Dracula definitely brought the character to life and made a legendary one besides as The Wolfman but Dracula did an amazing job putting spooktacular in spooktacular and made it a classical horror movie flick 🧛‍♂️
