He provides the defensive solidity, ball progression and help with build up to play more as a 6 next to Rice in tougher games and the creativity to play more advanced in the left 8 against low blocks. I think one of the problems with Barca is that they get too attached to the past. They allow nostalgia to influence their decisions too much. They want to plat the way they did in the glory days and they completely reject the idea of trying something new or different.

Why would De jong go to Arsenal? He has mentioned that he is a fan, citing the Ajax-Arsenal-Barca route a lot of Dutch players followed. Arsenal also have Declan Rice, a top 2 DM in the world. 7:40 this right here is what's wrong with the barcelona style (and technically pep's as well but he has infinite funds and can basically buy/develop any profile he wants and even pep still can't get the exact players he wants for his ideal system). it's not that the barca style doesn't work anymore. if anything, it would work extremely well in this time period because players are slowly starting to reliant on being physical again because they don't have enough of a technical ability to dominate otherwise. it's more that the more recent heavy coaching influence and heavy emphasis on systems means players who are able to *efficiently* make passes or score goals are being put into the spotlight while players who are a bit nuanced and are simply hard to play against with the ball in their feet are fading into obscurity. there aren't that many top clubs anymore, and much less lower tier clubs, that value those players, and so those players never really get a chance to shine for even development clubs to pick them up. that being said, the barcelona style has been picked up as the spanish style more recently and many spanish academies still do prefer that kind of technical prowess, so the safest way for barcelona to proceed is to simply rely on themselves and the local spanish academies around them to form and mold those players themselves. they're already kind of doing it with some of their current young midfielders, but i think they are caught in this weird transition between generations of players and so they are going to be forced to add physicality to their game to cope with the rest of the europe simply because there is not enough of those players in the team for them to replicate that kind of style. it's obviously faster for the club if they can happen to land on one of those players coming from other parts of the world, but that kind of gamble needs funds and funds is the last thing barcelona can afford right now.
