There’s so many intersecting reasons for Epic Fantasy to die off tbh: Editors preferring shorter word counts, editors preferring shorter series (duologies over trilogies over even longer sequences), attention spans and literacy trending downwards, TikTok favorable books being more likely to turn a huge profit, epic fantasy authors not completing their series after publishers invest in them (!), the time it takes to write and edit those chonkers, etc…
@alb0zfinest
@alb0zfinest 3 ай бұрын
All those reasons are true but I would especially emphasize the attention span/literacy argument. Younger women in general are reading essentially book porn or low brow poorly written YA fantasy. Young men in general are not reading at all, and if they do it's self help bs. The ones not fitting in these sections want to read beyond the aforementioned genres but don't have the attention span or are too overworked to dedicate time to reading at all. So, most students now are reading 3-4 grades below their level, movies and shows are heavily corporatized and are catering to the lowest common denominator, ai art is starting to be widespread, music is utter garbage, soon enough there will be no distractions left to cover the socio-political situation were in. This is part of a general decay in society that is now at exponential levels, so to be expected but still sad.

@@alb0zfinest You are BANG ON with the part that younger women are reading poorly written books and I'm speaking from personal experience. I used to be a part of that demographic before. After reading the abomination that was Fourth Wing, I picked up the Greenbone saga by Fonda Lee and realized that difference between actual fantasy and some trope filled garbage written to make young readers think they are reading fantasy. And the dark romance genre is another thing that is ruining the quality of books being popularised.

I am not saying there is no truth to it at all, but I do not agree with the oversimplified and generalised nature of the way you put it. First, reading taste is subjective. The fact that you think a book is bad, does not mean it has no merit for others. Second, a lot of people get into reading through lighter and more digestable books. A lot of us have fond memories of the first books that makes us excited about reading, but they may not hold up on a reread once we have explored our reading taste more. Despite that, they got us there. They made us want to read. I think that is something in which they have succeeded, even if they were not the best book ever written. There is thus merit in those books. Third, books need to meet you in the moment. That may be based on age, gender and taste, but also personal circumstances. For instance, when you are going through things, you may enjoy more of a popcorn light angsty book because you just want a nice distraction. Etc. Etc. I am not saying you said anything to discount that necessarily, but the way you put it made me a bit uncomfortable. So, I just wanted to add this to maybe add bit more nuance.

I am totally on the same page with you!! I am SO happy that Booktok has really made reading... Idk, fashionable? again, and inspired so many younger readers and I really couldn't care less what it is they're reading (although I do love how I feel like Fantasy has so many subgenres that there is something for everyone, now), it's a bitter sensation for lifelong epic story lovers who find less on the shelves for them... Particularly men, because so much of what's released feels very female-focused. I can count on one hand trad published books in the last couple of years that I feel my husband would be interested in. It's a cycle, because if they don't publish books for those audiences, those audiences won't buy lots of new books, so they look at their numbers and keep pushing what brings the profit... I'm sure that trends will change in the coming decades, but in the meantime, I'm definitely going to give more self pub a try!

to add to this - something I’ve noticed is recent fantasy books will be set in this epic, large scale worlds, and whereas previously authors would take the time to explore the various cultures/multiple characters, now, the stories focus in on a couple (romantasy, per say) or a small-scale storyline and the book ends up feeling… unfulfilled, and not epic at all. Even though it could be! Faebound and even the Tainted Cup, are some recent examples of this for me

Yet, I am on booktok at the moment a lot… I see why this argument is formed. They are late about 4-5 years even if they like epic fantasy. They are just about reading Mistborn. Most of them. And I’m talking about the impactful accounts, that means a lot who are following them are the same. Checking their videos? They have some intentions to read epic fantasy or course. But the fact that a lot of you who have the experience are not there giving recommendations? They are “children” in the topic and booktok works way more on recommendations than booktube. As you know the technical aspects are literally like I could make a snitch for the question of the TikTok to answer it: “here is the book I recommend if you like that!” And there are trends there they follow.. “if you liked hunger games, read red rising…” hashtag.. see my point? But they have a very limited list. As an example when I made for a test a vid for Malazan? It was a very rare video. Almost nobody made it. ☝️So how would they know what’s going on with that famous series when there is no content on booktok about it? Nobody bothered to make some! Or about Sun Eater. I believe only 3 of us made vid about it at all. And I don’t have an USA SIM card yet to target American audiences so I can’t get view numbers there. I will manage it somehow later. But that’s the point. Booktok has 2 billion videos and it’s only a few about epic fantasy, yet a lot about romantasy or YA-ish fantasy like Shadow and Bone. Now why would the publisher care about us? 👀 Next they published 4th Wing in a number we never saw before (they printed at first edition in higher numbers than Brando Sando’s books!!!) because they were sure they can sell it. How they were this sure? They built an audience already on TikTok. Hype train. Influencers. So are the complainers totally wrong? No. But it’s not destroying reading. Can be a bad effect on quality tho because they only listen to the almighty dollar and that’s in these poorly written books.

This is so interesting to me we are having this conversation now because I have been thinking why does every booktuber hate urban fantasy? Like when I look at the favorites lists a lot of people put out it’s always high epic fantasy and I have always enjoyed more real world setting series but then I look at Goodreads and see things like Percy Jackson or shadow hunters have like millions of ratings so then I wonder if it’s just because the people reading those books maybe aren’t on booktube or something. I do enjoy some epic fantasy but I like having one foot in the real world in my stories I feel like it makes it easier to sink into a fantasy world like that

Finally got to come back and finish. I think epic fantasy has always been niche but the popular ones are SO popular. Cause I am still finding modern epics but they are things like dandelion dynasty that are not as well known outside of booktube. And publishing has always been weird like this. Sanderson for years struggle to get in cause all they wanted was the next wheel of time or song of ice and fire. Its just a machine that is trying its best to guess what people want but normally not doing an amazing job imo 😅

Hey, Brittany! You will get your epic fantasy fix if you read the authors who started it all! Read Robert E. Howard, Michael Moorcock, H.P. Lovecraft, C.L. Moore, Edgar Rice Burroughs, David Gemmell, Karl Edward Wagner and Fritz Leiber. These authors and Tolkien are the fountainhead of everything that followed in your genre of interest. Read Lloyd Alexander for excellent Young Adult romantasy. Read Guy Gavriel Kay for excellent historical fantasy. Read Mark Smylie's "Artesia" for excellent graphic novel epic fantasy.

It’s possible that the overall publishers’ size trend could be more a case of ‘right sizing’ than ‘down sizing’. Despite their strengths, serious arguments can be made that some of the series you cite have size/scale related issues, eg, Wheel of Time (loses its way through the slog), Malazan (unwieldy, incomprehensible plot-lines), Game of Thrones (author incapable of completing the series). These issues can tax the patience of the readership, and publishers take note accordingly. Sometimes less is more TBH.

I knew about the word count requirements as I am writing. Traditional publishing now is looking for fantasy books / romantasy books to be between 90k-120k words which makes you so limited. Makes it so difficult to break into the market and have a book that truly digs into the world, immerses you, fleshes things out. Especially without the promise of being offered to publish your second book etc.

This is why I rarely pick up new fantasy these days. Thankfully, I still have a large collection of older works to make my way through. If you're looking for some new (to you) epic fantasy, I have a couple of recommendations for you: Age of Five trilogy by Trudi Canavan Wars of Light and Shadow by Janny Wurts - the last book (11) is being released this month, so now is a great time to get into it Not sure about what the publishers are after, but as you said, you can get epic fantasy in shorter works, and trilogies - it just takes a level of skill that many new authors haven't reached yet.
@Tinahgirl83
@Tinahgirl83 3 ай бұрын
I love both as well. Publishing has a bad habit of seeing one thing sell really well and then refusing to print anything else. Fourth Wing sold really well, so now everything has to have dragon riders. The Poppy War series sold really well, so everything had to be Asian-inspired. The Secret History and If We Were Villains got noticed by Book Tok so everything had to be dark academia. They are so focused on greed that they will blindly force something on readers until they’re sick of it. Then you have authors who won’t finish their series. So people don’t want to start a new 5 book series because it may never make it past book 3. And instead of them thinking, “oh, maybe people are leery of starting a huge series before it’s finished because the author may die or just not write it,” publishing says “oh they don’t like epic fantasy.” Never mind the fact that they can’t keep WOT on the shelves or GOT or NoTW. They won’t even carry/reprint decent size copies of Malazan past book 1. They only have Hyperion and ignore the rest of the series. They just are completely deaf and blind to doing what benefits all readers as opposed to focusing on a small group. Legends and Lattes and The House on the Cerulean Sea sold well, so now we have an overabundance of (sometimes badly written) cozy fantasy. They follow trends instead of setting them and cater to a small group of people because they think it will make more money. It’s one of the reasons why indie publishing is having such a huge impact on readers. It’s the only place where you can get real variety.

Repetitive and very poorly thought out argument. Yes there has always been, but what was the proportion of it then vs now?Where before it might've been 80-20 (that's being generous) now it's almost the complete opposite where it's 20-80 of adult fantasy vs YA and "romantasy." Also compare the writing quality and prose previously of those "romantasies," vs what's written now and you'll see how drastic the differences are. I have no problem with romantasy, in fact I prefer if a fantasy book has a romance aspect instead of some of the cringe slapped on relationships like in WOT for example. But they have to be well written and currently that's not only not the case, it's so far from the case that I don't even know how these books are being published.

great topic! so yes i agree there has been an increase in romantasy book compared to epic fantasy being advertised and pushed more i think because right now there’s a lot of new readers due to booktok and it’s great for the future of the book community. To me the surge of romantasy and such is a way to keep new readers hooked for the long haul so that maybe in the future some readers will start to want more epic fantasy. i started off with easy fun reads for a while before i started to crave a longer world building and read something that would take me weeks to finish and not a couple days. so i think the focus right now is trying to hook and maintain majority of new readers by romantasy rather than what could be intimidating like an epic fantasy series.

I also keep giving Sanderson second shots also. Am I wrong to say, despite loving him for finishing WoT, the further he got from Jordan’s final book, the worse they got? Is it wrong to say Stormlight isn’t all that? Is it wrong of me to say that the love for him in and around booktube, is way overblown? Maybe I’m wrong.

The Dragonlance books tended to be shorter than later epic fantasy, but the entire shared universe of Dragonlance had around 200 or so books. I do think traditional epic fantasy is due to make a comeback. There has been a tendency to split large books into smaller volumes, so sometimes epic fantasy is out there, just not packaged like Wheel of Time.

Great to her your thoughts on this Brittany. Have you considered reading *Wars of Light and Shadow* by Janny Wurts? It is a big series, and tbh one of the only series that has this dense, thoroughly fleshed out world that feels as "complete" and real as Erikson's Malazan. I'm just saying it's a big series, it is wrestling with really important themes and has a totally captivating struggle between the two main characters. It was first published in like the 90's but the final 11th volume is being published this month - so it's current, but not a new gen voice. I truly feel like it is a thirst quenching series that has huge scope, great characters an epic story, and a very thorough and well put together world. I hope you'll check it out. But more importantly thanks for sharing your views on the state of fantasy. I agree with a lot of this, but I've been kind of afraid to try new fantasy series myself. Afraid nothing meets the bar set by Tolkien, Erikson etc The Spear that Cuts Through Water was interesting and unique, but it was a one off.

I think there is a place for both for sure. I go through moods. I wasn't a huge romance reader and romantasy has been a blessing so I can enjoy "fluffier" books while still having fun in a fantasy world. I haven't read tons of epic fantasy series - just LOTR, Song of Ice and Fire and Outlander (okay that one is more historical with a touch of fantasy, but I'm counting it because of it's richly imagined world and long series length). There is just SO MUCH MORE that I want to read because I haven't read it yet. But, I can totally understand the source of your frustration when you have already read all of these classic and epic series. I think readers may tend to shy away from these books too in a world where quantity is greatly valued. I have 3 young children, so even when I want to read read read - it will take me 2 or 3 weeks to read an epic fantasy (I'm basing this on my recent longer fantasy reads like Day of Fallen Night and The Will of the Many). I am not even caught up in numbers that much but I can sometimes feel the tug of "I have so many books that I want to read, I need to move on now!" But for people with more time on their hands than me - I can see how the online world could make one feel like they HAVE to take a photo of a huge stack of books as opposed to one or two dense chunkers, even though both have complete validity.

I like to read both aswell. I enjoy a romantasy book as much as an epic fantasy. I tend to enjoy epic fantasy’s more though. I feel like with romantasy I get bored easily because the overused tropes in them. That’s different with epic fantasy books. When I read a good and long fantasy book I really concentrate on the story and every single detail because it could be very important to the continuing series. That’s more fun for me. Current I am reading the Bound and the Broken series and I love it. I started the series thanks to Petrik’s reviews too. He is so right with this one.

Whats interesting is along with the rise of romantasy, Litrpg and progression fantasy have also risen, and they are certainly epic in nature. Defiance of the fall, for example, revolves around a mega galactic war between various species. Granted this genre is more popcorny and is meant to be consumed just for fun, so they certainly won't scratch the itch ASOIAF, WOT, etc leave, but if you're just looking for the "epic" in epic fantasy then you might like these books

Thank you for this nuanced discussion. I've been noticing this "trend" as well. I just feel like fantasy books are rather on the cozier/simpler/shorter side these days and I just miss epic fantasy. It's not like there aren't any epic fantasy series that are being published. Like, there are definitely series that go rather in depth with their themes, characters, world building etc. (e.g. the dandelion dynasty, the stormlight archive) but there are just fewer epic fantasy series than back in the day. This is also why I have started reading more (epic) sci-fi bc I feel like the genre is not as beloved anyways, so the publishers don't care as much about what's popular in the genre and what isn't (this is just speculation tho, obvi). I just wish that epic fantasy will have its comeback rather sooner than later.

I think you nailed it with just it doesn't sell. Especially with a new author. I doubt we see an epic fantasy come from a debut author for a long time, but you would need significant clout to write a series like Stormlight Archives. And its perpetuating because if you are successful author, your livelihood is dependent on your books selling in some form and for some jotting down another 80k-100k story is easier than trying to do a magnum opus like WoT, Stormlight, etc. It is sad and I'm sure we will see some breakthrough here and there, but my guess it is going to come from the self-pub side.

The best recent Epic fantasy I read, the Raven Son series by Nicholas Kotar, is a total of seven books so far and was self published. Good stuff is still out there, but it's going to be harder to find, because the big name publishers won't publish them. Could not agree with this assessment more! Since I started reading WOT at 11 I feel like my entire foray into fantasy has been an attempt to recapture that experience. I think publishers are being quite short-sighted as there already exists an enormously loyal reader base for epic fantasy - it’s just a different demographic target than what’s currently sensationalised (as much as I do enjoy my guilty little romantasy reads). Also been diving heavily into sci-fi since the onslaught of recent quality adaptations like Dune, Foundation, and The Three Body Problem (which was an amazing read btw). Do you recommend any epic-scale sci-fi series to appease my current thirst for complexity and scale?

Def not trashing down romantasy or other sub genres (bc honestly I’ll read everything), but I’ve been missing those authentic stories with great journeys, worlds, troubles, losses, and victories. Maybe, for now, the publishing industry is loosing its touch for epic fantasy considering the factors they’re prioritizing now: time and money. Traditional publishing follows what is hot and selling at the moment, often to its detriment due to readers getting tired of the tide of "same old thing" that keeps coming down the publishing pipes. New authors, fresh takes on established genres, and straight up blockbusters are what change trad pubs' content bloat. Currently, romantasy is selling really well (yay for these authors and their readers!), so trad pub encourages (pushes) its authors to create that type of content, until the quality level hits a ridiculous low and we're all sick of it. That's usually when something "different" catches the eye of readers who then share it, talk it up, and exclaim about how new and fresh an idea it is. It's usually not new and fresh. It's a new perspective on an old idea (a type of story that's fallen out of favor, or has never been in favor because it's attached to one or more minority groups). It's a cyclic pattern. I think that epic fantasy will absolutely have its day in the sun again. We are all just waiting for the prose/voice that makes their story leap off the page. Also, sometimes the cycle is very long. Sculpture artist Louise Bourgeois was making art like her famous gigantic spider she named "Mother" for years before she was "discovered" when she was in her eighties or something. She just lived long enough for her style of art to come back into fashion again. 😂

I only read anything from before 2015. The world got woke after that and you can see in all entertainment from movies to TV and books. There has to be Diversity, inclusion and representation in everything. This stunts creative processes and by trying to appeal to everyone, appeal to no one. Just look at Disney in 2024. So who killed creativity? Social media and cancel culture. I read Sunbringer this month and I knew what would happen. The main character is a strong female girl boss, she is gay and disabled. In fact everyone is just about in this book. I wasn't suprised. Story isn't as important as representation now. That's why the past decade of entertainment has been on the majority, crap.

@@BookswithBrittanyif you need some fantasy recommendations I'd suggest some R.A Salvatore. He doesn't exactly write epic fantasy but it is high fantasy and quite well written (unlike someone like Sanderson). David Gemmell might also scratch the itch. Again unfortunately not on the scale of WOT or ASOIAF but they have the older fantasy immersive quality. You can also try Terry Goodkind, some are slog and he's a controversial author, but his world is immersive.

What are you talking about? There's still plenty of authors writing Epic Fantasy. You should visit a bookstore and ask someone to help you.
