Yes, about 35 years ago I became one of those pushed out of farming by high feed costs and volatile pork prices. It was the family farm and devastating to my parents. They were so happy to see me take interest in the farm and so we invested heavily but to no avail. The bank took ownership and I remember my mother weeping at the signing of the documents. I had to take another vocation and my parents took retirement yet continued to work many years to be able to buy a house and survive on little money. I did not become wealthy but managed to raise a family and now am retired and live in Mexico where it is cheaper. Your farm operation reminds me a lot of my young years in farming.

I do valentine's day with my Lady. But I absolutely refuse to Do Christmas in the way most people. We gather& Cook& hang& eat. But our presence is our Presents. That's the Gift

In Slovenia there is a popular way of raising pork. Many farmers grow pigs to 60kg and thn in August or September you buy that pig and feed him to 120-140kg and then proces you yourself. You feed to them what you have grown on your fields that year. In Slovenia base feed are beet, potatoes and some barley and not corn and beans.

We sell our pork in local farmers markets here in England UK, our ham sells very well in some and only moderate in others, we find the more rural the market customers understand how much work and cost are involved and sell out within hours, the town based farmers markets less so. Hello Pete. Your sense of humor really cracks me up! I love how you started this video. The dad jokes are great! I enjoy your channel immensely as we also have a small hobby farm. In one of your videos I heard you mention the town of Locke. I wondered how many towns named Locke there were in the states as there is one by me. The video revealed that we are basically neighbors. I’m located in Binghamton! I’ve lived in Cartland and Syracuse. I enjoy watching your channel even more now that I know it’s in my neck of the woods. As to your pig discussion. We also have the same problem with selling our pork. Everyone wants bacon and chops, but don’t want to pay the price required. So we now only grow pigs for our family consumption. Keep up the great work.

I know what you mean, Pete. I enjoy coaxing our old H to start on a cold morning just to let the battery charge and listen to her run. Always brings back memories of Grandpa and Dad. They're no longer with me and it's one of those things that brings our spirits closer together!

I always enjoy these talks. It gives so much more insight to our economic environment as a whole than just about pigs. We have become very reliant on a a few corporations controlling a lot of our food and other necessities. If you can plant even one tomato, squash or pepper, maybe a few green beans to learn to grow food, please do. A couple of hens are fun and produce food pretty regular. It won't give you food security but it will give you a feeling of empowerment that you did SOMETHING for yourself. No one is coming to save you. Lets all put on our big girl/boy pants and get 'er done.

Your comments about the pork pricing is world wide from what I can see; we have the same issues with processing costs etc for pork in Australia. My uncles stopped thier pigs decades ago in favour of lamb and grain. Beef is massive in Australia also but raised in different areas. Loving the videos.

I discovered this channel 3 days ago , since then i watched every video . Seen them selling that delicious meat at the farmers market , seen them at their daily routine and sadly , seen them loosing Prodence , their lovely cow . Several years ago now, Dad decided we were going to raise pigs to help fund me in college. We started doing that when I was about halfway through high school. We evidently picked exactly the wrong time to get started because before we'd even built the first set of farrowing crates, the price of pork went down to 20% what it had been the previous week and the price of corn went up by 500%. Between that and getting back less than 200 pounds of meat from a full grown cow, it got very frustrating trying to run a small single-family farm in the late 1990s.

I 'm with you on the pig business. I used to raise and sell pigs but that got crazy and people dropped out one by one. Customers paid a deposit to start and then when the pig was ready to butcher they paid me the remainder (cost plus 33%) and the pig was theirs. They also made arrangements with their butcher and paid the butcher. I did transport the pig to the butcher of their choose. The problem was people couldn't save the money over the summer and they were strapped and borrowed money from the bank. I began losing customers one at a time until I had only one. A familly that was wealthy and purchased a pig every year. I enjoy raising pigs too but I don't know if I should get back in or not. I was thinking of a small scale with just piglets and saving one a year for us.I don't if that would pay it not.

when i was a kid working in dad's garage, everything that came in for repair was worn out. When starting old Chryslers, they sounded like "I dont wanta, I dont wanta, I dont wanta". your old tractor sounds just like them. A memory. thks.

I totally understand the predicament you are in with raising everything and doing the processing. Our last beef and pork were managed by us, not the producer. We told the butcher what cuts and processing we wanted and paid the butcher directly. We also picked IT up at the butcher, because we paid them. This saved our producer from that ownership. It was very successful for us. We bought a full steer and full pig in our last order.

Last year we grew our pork production and built a nice barn and didn't sell but 2 hogs all year. It was a big loss but now we are building a custom exempt butcher shop on the farm to hopefully bring the customers to us.

Pete, could you do a video about all of those old tools and farm implements you have hanging on the wall where you water the cows? What are they? How do they work? Do you still use them? If not, what replaced them? Those sorts of things. Thanks!

Hi Pete and Hillary. I buy a half beef and a half pig every year. I get to pick the cuts and do so off what I have left in my freezer from the previous year. I don’t mind paying a little more for the quality and knowing my ground meat comes from one animal. Great job as always. I’m hooked on your channel

Here in South Africa, we call that impatience 'Jo'burg' syndrome. Johannesburg is one of my country's economic hubs, and everybody is always in such a rush to get to where they're going. The traffic is nuts, the people are always angry or frustrated and time means money in the worst possible way. My fiance and I want a farm like yours one day...we're trying to save up for one...because we don't want to raise our kids in the 'Jo'burg' environment. We want them to grow up with patience like yours, and an appreciation for Nature's timing rather than Man's timing. Your program is like a visit to my Grandparent's farm in Northwest Missouri. I spent the happiest times of my childhood gathering eggs, herding cattle and walking with Grandma to find a missing cow and her new calf. So, thanks to you and Hilary, I can listen to the roar of the tractor, the lowing of the cattle and squeal of the piglets without leaving my recliner. The sounds of your farm are the heartbeat of who I am. Even though I have traveled so far from my roots and am too old now to farm, I do agree with you when you say most problems could be solved by a week on the farm. Please keep your videos coming. Thanks for the compressive analysis , your discourse stimulated me to think in deeper terms about things the family farmer goes through.

Back in the 70's I lived in Columbia county NY and worked on a small family farm. We had Sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, and was just starting to get into Dexter cows. There was never a real market for the goats or the sheep except for what we consumed ourselves. With the sheep it was mostly the wool that we sold and that was mostly to small craft and clothing businesses. The goats were there mostly for the milk that was sold locally to people who wanted an alternative to cow's milk. With the chickens it was mostly eggs and a few broilers that we sold. It is a tough market that continues to get tighter with big commercial farms squeezing out the family farms.

Luckily we have a couple farms who still have pigs raised on dirt and not confinement. I gladly pay the price they ask and then do the butchering ourselves. Definitely a difference in quality in my opinion and worth the money.

I’m 73 and when I was a kid my parents used to buy half and quarter sides of beef. At this time it made economic sense to buy that way. My aunt and uncle had a large fenced yard. One time they bought a lamb and raised it up to full size. Went over to their house one time and asked where Wooly was. They took us into the garage and showed us the freezer. Many wrapped packages of Wooly.

Luckily, in my area they still do halves and wholes. We just give the butcher our cut sheet and pick up usually within a week. I agree with you on having pork instead of steak! Chops, scrapple and bacon are my favorites. We usually also have sausage at least once a week either with pasta or with peppers and onions. Definitely need to know your market and what the next year may sell well. We were mainly vegetable farming and knowing whether to plant peppers, tomatoes, eggplant or a lot of things like cantaloupe and watermelon were tough decisions to make over the winter. Then once you plant, you pray! 👍👍👍

I really love pork but I kinda stopped getting it because it just doesn’t have that good ol’ pork flavor I grew up with. So disappointing. I always enjoy your discussions because it helps me understand about the challenges facing small farms. My brother lives near St Louis in Illinois and he raised goats until he retired because there was no one else raising them in the area and there was a huge demand coming out of the St Louis area from various religious groups for goat and sheep. He did not want to raise sheep but he did raise goats and he actually at one time was up to about eight hundred goats and was selling them fairly quickly. No he did not stay with eight hundred goats for very long because it was just too much work for him and his wife and their daughter and for most of the time he was farming he usually had about 250. But now that he is retired he gets calls all the time from his old customers because they cannot get goats and the quality of the goats that they can get is not nearly as good as what he raised. They want him to get back into raising goats but he said I'm 79 years old I'm not farming anymore. Between the goats and his auction business though he made a very good living.

We're getting that wide temperature swing here in Michigan -18 yesterday with a high of 18 Good thing that's a 504 Diesel, if it was a 560 you would still be holding the glow plug button down.

I’ve been growing my beef operation more in the last year and a half and sold the rest of my breeder hogs about six or seven months ago. When I talk to my fiancé about how I miss them sometimes she looked me straight in the eye and says “no you don’t”.. she’s right.

I grew up in upstate NY a few miles outside of Watertown in farm country so I really enjoy watching. I'm 60 and have 7 kids and I love to tell them dad jokes (which I don't think they appreciate much lol) so I get a kick out of hearing yours, as well as some new material! I find your talks like this one to be very enjoyable and thought provoking and the content diversity is great! I currently live in Maryland where I've been since '87 and like that it's a bit warmer and less snow but I do miss the north country. Thanks and take care.

We used to raise feeder pigs, sell them at 40 lbs. With 50 to 100 hogs, about 20 to 30 farrowing atone time. Very good video.

We had a friend who had a lunch truck business he'd save all the old food . We'd feed the pigs that besides grain , give him a couple pigs per year in exchange for saving the old food for us. But like you say you have to know your market. Good luck and thanks for the videos. Stay warm.

Born February 1969, always wanted to be a helicopter pilot, farmer and truck driver, done the one out of three, have flown, not licensed, but still don’t count. What I’m getting about here is not me, but what you’re video is about. Demand. I don’t know how many times I’ve gone to Walmart to buy something I like, they sold but no longer do… not because not available but no demand. It’s all business, which if you only carry or produce what customers don’t want, your out of business. Small home farmer here from north California. I do about 15 ish pigs a year, and everything you speak of in this video is 100% true. It's like your speaking right to me.

Pete, if the chances ever arise I would love to sit down and talk farming and farm philosophy with you. As a Minnesota farmer I can relate and I think our differences in markets are even relatable. It is extremely hard to find any pork here that has any sort of pasture time or even small farm growth. The best we have found is a grower an hour from us that will let us buy a hog and he delivers them to the butcher once a month or twice a month. Otherwise he's shipping big numbers. The beef side is kinda crazy, theres a ton of beef in the market in our area and producers are not competing very well so prices are not very conducive to quality pasture growth and grain finishing which is our preference. There's a lot of feed lot type farms even on the small scale here.

I always learn so much watching your videos. Besides hearing your thought process for how you farm i learned that New York has 3 seasons, Mud Snow and the forth of July.

What we did here in Fulton Ny on our dairy farm, when we raised some pigs we would check with bakery’s and get old bread and whatever else. It’s free for taking away for them . Then we took some milk and mixed it up in a big 55 gallon barrel and feed that every other day unless we had lots then every day with a little feed . Beautiful tasting meat…..and didn’t use as much feed to raise them

Hi Pete, Really enjoy the channel. Long time viewer, first time commenter. We raise hogs too. We are experiencing a lot of the same issues you discussed in this video. Even with raising my own corn, feeding out hogs is going to be more expensive this year. I kind of look at it this way; Why would I would I want to run my corn through a hog plus deal with the public when I can take it to the local grain elevator and get over $6 per bushel for it at current market price. At one time we were running over 30 head per year through our little barn. This year it will probably be more like 12. We row crop approximately 800 acres which is small for our area but we make a good living doing it. I really respect what you are doing making a living off of a small farm and educating the public about issues that affect small farms

I lived on farms in UK when I was younger, from aged 7 to aged 35 and enjoyed the life and enjoy your shows in USA very much. I just had a brief glimpse of a Long Case Clock in your house. Looked good !! I have two, one 1835 the other slightly Newer, maybe 1855 or thereabouts ! Would like a little closer look and info on Camera please. Got to say I am first a Vegan but I support what you do. You treat your animals amazing 👏 ❤️. It is a shame that good hearted small farms are losing the battle to cheap meat. This scenario is playing out not only in the US but all over the world. Good luck and please never lose your focus. Thanks for the reminders about farm economics. The meat I consume in order most to least is chicken, pork, fish, beef, but I'm 66. I was a little surprised that its hard to profit in pork. I noticed the price of a pound of bacon is $9.50+ in my area currently(Mich) in supermarkets. Some rural Farm store/butcher shops are 25% to 35% less. Thanks for the channel!
