Even if Yates was a shell....he would have started the year in a car that he could qualify & would have been in the top 35. MWR was a sad excuse for a team in those days.....well they didn't get much better in time either.

Yeah especially after he was so fast in the chase after being eliminated.

He probably would not have won 3rd championship if it wasn't for the 2 extra Chase spots. He was the same way in 2011 as he was here. Meh the whole regular season, but then kicked ass in the chase.

@@gth804f Nah. Tony would've finished 2nd or 2rd if he had made the Chase. Jeff didn't have a run that good. NASCAR got shook that a legit title threat didn't even compete for the title. No surprise they went to 12 drivers the next year.

The 2011 championship race was what drove that point home in my view. Everything seemed to point towards Carl Edwards’ favor (Tony had more wins but Roush Racing was dominating Homestead in that time. Biffle got 3 Homestead wins from 2004-2006, Kenseth won in 2007, and Carl himself won in 2008 and 2010) but through straight up determination to not give up, Tony outraced Carl to win the title.

I hate stage racing, but I also hate the situation that lead to Jimmie Johnson winning 7 championships. Same track schedule, at the same points in the year, with the chase system, in a car no one seemed to like driving. Jimmie was the first person to figure the COT out, and since the schedule didn't change, he could just keep building his advantage week by week, year by year. The chase system rewarded that consistenty even if he wasn't necessarily winning everything, until the last few races. Same sort of issue with Mercedes in F1, where the Mercedes team is so far ahead of everyone, and has so much data about the tracks they race on, no one can catch them unless they cheat, focus on one track, or demand the FIA to give them a new car and engine package. That's why keeping the schedule varied is super important in a racing series. In truth, I want a year long championship battle again but with weight penalties like Super GT500 does in japan.

I always thought Riggs was a little underrated. He could be quick, but he was just so incosistent. I'm not saying he was great, but I thought he wasn't as bad as some made him out to be.

@@JohnSmith-mk5jt he was good in 2006 in the 10, finished 20th after missing the Daytona 500, he was a driver a lot of people picked to improve in 2007 and potentially make the chase, but then Dodge changed the nose on the charger and the COT was introduced and didn't even get to finish the season in the 10, if I'm thinking correctly the 10 became the 44 car AJ Allemendinger drove after the Evernham/Petty Enterprises merger.

Yes he did. I was a huge Rudd fan and watched that race live. I thought he was going to pull it off.

He also almost did at Sonoma in 2005 (though that one wasn't quite as close).

He also had the best car at Martinsville in 05. Was running down Stewart for the lead when Riggs carelessly caused a weird chain reaction where Sterling Marlin got sent into the air into Rudd's car. Came back to finish 11th too.

I seen a video addressing that, not sure if it was made by Iceberg. But basically Martinsville was his best friend, because Jeff Burton was have major problems at that race, while Jimmie went on to win that race and gain a lot of points on Jeff if not took the lead. Not to mention after Dega he finished second in every remaining race, except for Homestead where he finished in the top 10 enough points to win the title.

I like the idea of stages but many suggest just giving points at those laps and getting rid of the stage yellow, I think that and giving 1 point for leading a lap is a good idea.

@@polycube868 that was the case with 1 bonus point for leading/most lead between 2011 and 2016 season.

Great math there. Jeff Gordon and Dale Jr missed in 2005, Tony Stewart in 2006, and Jr again in 2007, so big stars missing the chase at that point was becoming a regular occurrence.

@@polycube868 had the 2005 Chase used the 2011-2013 Format Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick would still make the Chase in 2005 as Wild Cards and Gordon and Harvick would make the Top 10 in Points at Seasons End

To be honest, Dale Jr was never great in the 88 car. His best years were in the 8 car.
