Where do the New York Islanders Stand Entering the NHL Draft and Free Agency?

This will be a critical time for the New York Islanders and the rest of the teams in the NHL with the NHL Draft on Friday and Saturday and free agency starting Monday. But where exactly do the Isles stand in relation to the rest of the league at center, wing and defense? We take a look at that on today's show.

We'll see what Lou can do. I agree Lee and Pageau should be moved this offseason and they should not bring back Clutter or Martin. I hope Roy has some influence so he can get the players he needs to play his system. Thanks for the comment, nickcicione8455.

A step behind and a dime short as usual. Isles are alright on d and in goal. An upgrade up front is needed. And goal scorers cost a lot in terms of $$$'s and assets and are only found at the top of the draft. So how can a team with little cap room, no assets or viable players to move, and always middling in the middle of the nhl be active and join in on trade/ufa activities? Bad year in typical louzer form to have no ammo to do anything with a lot of scorers available and a loaded ufa crop. Run it back baby-run it back again louzer. What will happen. Louzer will trade the first for a guy he has to give another 7 year deal to to keep. Then scramble to dump 27 or 44 dumping both seconds/future picks to do that. Then will sign a few second day cheap ufa's as east teams already making moves improve. sj is already adding players. You better get busy louzer and dump 44 to sharks who got a 2nd plus a prospect from wings in a $$$ move for wallman.

Lou certainly has his hands full trying to fix the mess he created. I think he will make a move this summer, but it will be as you said, a scramble to free up cap space and then signing a player to a large extension probably with a NTC. Thanks for the comment, Steven.

I think the Islanders are going into the draft to find gems-that's the only way they'll move picks either up or down in the order. They need to replenish their prospect pool, maybe just maybe one of the answers to their needs they'll get in this draft. I would keep JP as the third line center-the roll of the dice is; might have move value at the deadline then in the summer. It might be time to move Cizikas-the salary is low enough, I think many teams would want him. Then Lou has to move the over supply of 3rd/4th liners just to clear out P/T. I would keep Lee for another year then maybe move him at next years deadline or a buyout next year if needed. I think the Islander's #1 trade chip is Dobson-IF (this is not at trade proposal) You could move Dobson for a Draisaitl would you do it?? hell yea!!!!!

I hope they keep the pick and do find a gem. I agree Pageau may have more value at the trade deadline, but he really should have been moved at this past year's trade deadline when someone was reportedly offering a first round pick. I don't mind moving Cizikas but as you said, the savings wouldn't be much because of his low salary. I doubt Lou would trade Dobson or Nelson, but those would be the most valuable trade chips other than Sorokin who also, Lou won't trade. Thanks for the comment, MrRobt1971

Trade some older players for draft capital or younger prospects. The Islanders could target college or European prospects who can develop in their current systems before making the jump to the NHL. Gonna need to be very creative here. LGI

Definitely need to be creative. The Tsyplakov signing and the trade with Chicago were a good start. I hope he does trade older players for younger prospects or picks, but that's not Lou's MO. We'll see what he does. Thanks for the comment, Darrell.

Good 🌄 , Gil, how are you? It's almost ⌚ for the NHL Draft, and where The Islanders stand is interesting. Centers: They're right in the middle. Left wing: Not good They're in 26th place as far as left wingers are concerned. Defenseman: 11th place. Goalies: Solid. Cole Eiserman. He's only 17 years old 43 points in 24 games. He could work on his passing. If The Islanders draft this kid they should keep him in juniors, so he can grow mentally and physically. HAPPY 🎂, ERIC CAIRNS. When you're older and you also haven't won anything, there's not going to be many who think the roster is quality. IMO, Lou needed to make these decisions after the second conference finals loss to Tampa. Got a lotta pushback for that opinion but when you're not fast enough, or talented enough, there's only so far good defense and goaltending can take you -- fataI flaw for not seeing it then

Lou is going nowhere unless he can free up 12 to 20 million! Being Lou he does nothing in free agency because he has no money and no ufa wants to play here with the exception of possibly Duclair. . All our guessing will likely be wrong. We just play the wait n see game

They have a ton of work to do. Lou has built this mediocre team. He doesn’t have the stones to make material changes to be a serious contender. He’s way too loyal to his guys. Loyal to a fault.

Got to choose the better option. Depends on what offers are made and what the exact cost is. They could save more via buyout if the combination of draft picks and salary retention is too high. Thanks for the comment, charlieohagan6750.
