The level of xenophobia and domestic racism in Russia is very high. Many Russians are wary of people of ‘non-Slavic’ appearance, people of other cultures and religions. This is surprising, given that Russia is a multi-ethnic, multi-confessional state. Older generations have grown up with Soviet mottos about ‘friendship between peoples,’ and until recently the expression ‘brotherly peoples’ meant something. Where does this fear and intolerance come from? Is aversion to the alien the norm everywhere? Pavel Kanygin explores these questions.
