The biggest and maybe the only laugh this movie got when I saw it in the theatre as a 13 year old in 1969 was when Major Smith tells Lt. Schaffer, "In the next 15 minutes we have to create enough confusion to get out of here alive." and Lt. Schaffer tells Major Smith, 'Major, right now you've got me about as confused as I ever hope to be." The entire audience laughed out loud at the response.

I’m 60 now, and I’ve known about this motion picture since the ‘80s. When it came out, I guess I was four, but never saw this movie on the big screen. Move ahead to around 1998. I was at a friend’s apartment one night, where we we drinking and indulging in a green leafy substance 😊. As we watched the movie on the ENCORE or STARZ Channel, the scene where Burton tells the Gestapo Major about the alleged plot to assassinate Hitler was hilarious when the Wehrmacht general yells “This is preposterous!”. It had us in stitches 😂😂👨🏻‍🦳🇺🇸.

Derren Nesbitt, playing Major von Hapen, is a classic! His portrayal of arrogance is spot on. Although playing a minor role compared to Eastwood and Burton, he really makes the most of his character.

According to Nesbitt, it took six takes to get the shot of Eastwood shooting him, twice. It was supposed to be one in the head and one in the chest - but the first five takes, the squib is his jacket was underwhelming (although each time writing off the jacket). On the sixth shoot (and final tunic), his jacket went off as if he'd been hit by a bazooka and he caught some of the debris in his eyes. Which lead to him then being taken to Denham A&E blindfolded, in SS uniform, with an apparent bullet hole in his head and trailing fake blood on the floor behind him. 😀

I used to record the audio of the film while its playing from video player on to the TV. I recorded only the audio with a Sony Walkman. Then I play it on the player in my car everyday during my field work involving 100 of miles of driving each day in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, some time in the late 80s. I was just 26 years old then. English is not my native language. I was not comfortable speaking English. But somehow i had memorized almost 95% of the dialogues of this movie. I kept on seeing the movie many times and I used to enjoy hearing the audio while driving almost every day. Richard Burton was my favorite actor.

@@JonathanEBoyd One more anecdote for you. Me and another mate took a 2 week road trip around California in the summer of 1993. It didn’t get off to a good start. I forgot my driving licence. Damnit! My mate was under 25 so he couldn’t rent a car. We got tipped off that a dodgy Iranian firm round the back of LAX airport might rent us a car. They did. And they ripped me off with a battered 7 year old Honda CRX with 100,000 miles on the clock, duct tape holding the rear bumper on, no aircon and only one speaker working from the tape deck. What can you do? Long story short we got lost in LA and ended up in Watts, the area where the year before the LAPD had battered Rodney King to a pulp. The last place two young white lads should have been. Two things probably saved our asses. Driving a tatty looking old banger but secondly when we pulled up at some traffic lights, music did. A big car pulled up alongside us. The driver was a huge African American dude and he gestured at my mate to roll down his window. I thought, Oh shit, we’re done, he’s gonna shoot us now and this is turning into a really rotten holiday. “Hey brother, what’ movie’s that music from?” Where Eagles Dare, mate! “Oh yeah! That’s a great movie, you boys have a great day now!” Then he wheelspun away when the lights changed. We got out of dodge alive and went on to have a fantastic holiday- back in the days when you earned the average wage which was enough to get you a house,a new car and amazing holidays. Not bad for a 27 year old without a degree and few qualifications...happy times!

The problem with this film is that it is set during the second world war, although helicopters were first built in 1940, they were not used until after the war was over. The helicopter in this film, was a Korean war era helicopter. These would not have been available when the film was set.

A complete fantasy, no way could two men hold off and kill so many highly trained soldiers without being killed themselves, or jump between cable cars like Superman. but this is why I've loved Where Eagles Dare since I was a kid. Thanks For watching and for your comments . I think people are annoyed with me because they were expecting a pure movie compilation Without any Commentary which isn't possible because KZfaq will block it for copyright. Maybe if I had put (commentary) in the title they wouldn't be so annoyed . At the end of the day I'll always annoy some people some will hate it some will like it I did my best & I'm glad I did it. Many have told me about the novel I'll have to read it 1 day .is it long ? where did you find the book is it on amazon ? The movie may not be as in-depth as the book but I think you'll still find it enjoyable it's a good ride . I wish you watched the movie before my video cause I gave away all the best bits but I think it's still will be good fun watching A classic in my eyes Take care

Glad this video came up in my feed. You did an excellent job and your commentary and impersonations are outstanding and hilarious! It really is an excellent movie and I have seen it many times. Sir Richard Burton is fantastic and the way he delivers his lines - so matter of fact and I love how you point out he is continuously issuing out orders to everyone. Clint Eastwood is also great and his character is so laconic, and he really is a “proper assassin.” I am going to have to start using that line. Thanks for taking the time to make both these videos honoring such a great movie. Another WW2 movie along the same grain is the Guns of Navarone which has David Niven another fantastic British actor.
