Another decade has passed and five decades have gone since the premiere of «Where Eagles Dare». This is a "road movie documentary" about this classic war flick, movie magic, passion and old boyhood dreams. Produced, filmed, flown, formed and cut by David Skauen.

Good movie not as great as the background. Clint always seems out of place in WWII movies since the spaghetti Westerns defined him in the time period.

I saw this movie with my father at the age of 10. I did not understand what I was seeing at the time, but the planning became clear as the movie progressed, for instance, planting the charges on the road to the airport. The combined effect of my father, the music, the actors, the action, the location, and the intelligence of the planning cast a magical spell on me as well. I have passed it to my children.

Hopefully many! I was approximately 8 years old when this film debuted. No, I did not see this in the theatre. However, it appeared on American television ("Movie of the Week", that sort of thing) very soon- within a year. One wonderful evening when I was supposed to be in bed, my parents (Dad specifically, of course) tuned in to "Eagles". I had already learned the art of clandestine television viewing and quietly found my usual spot at the end of the long bedroom hallway, looking past the kitchen and dining area into the living room. The television in the far corner of the room afforded me a perfect view of the screen, and kept me shielded from detection by my parents. I watched a lot of movies in that manner. What struck me even then was the length of the film. I was literally falling asleep on my feet but determined to watch it all. Like Mr Dugan I did not understand all that unfolded before me but enough to know the good guys from the bad guys and to marvel at the firefights and explosions. It was the start of a love affair similar to our host, David, that continues even now- like ni mo I am close to 60 years old.

I love Bear Island, Polar Station Zebra, Breakhurt Pass and many others. I would love to recommend The Eagle Has Landed. Michael Caine and Donald Sutherland are kings.

The old classics, like Where Eagles Dare, Guns of Navarone, just can something that newer action movies can't. As several highlight, in their comments "It's a man with a mission". It's unfortunately not something you see much of in recent films. But thanks to @David for the brilliant mini documentary.

This Where Eagles Dare homage is, firstly, by far the finest 'filming locations revisited' film I've seen anywhere - including on mainstream TV programmes. It's a beautiful piece about this man's obsessive quest and the production quality throughout is just superb. Now, I have to confess that the icing on the cake is that Where Eagles Dare was also, by far, THE favourite film of my childhood and teen years. It represents perfection in the genre on so many levels. Having recorded it from the BBC (no ads/commercials) I then watched it almost every Saturday evening for years. It became a ritual and my mother catered for weddings on these nights, so as an only child I'd subject my patient father to it again & again over a shared tea of 'boiled eggs with soldiers' (toast). I too have spent hours examining Google Maps & planning the eventual road trip, nay pilgrimage, I will make there. The other videos I saw before were done in summer but I feel only winter would suffice. It's fantastic to know someone else out there shared this same obsession with the film and everything it represented. I worked in the military with videographers and production, so have a small inkling of the kind of time and obsessive attention to detail it would require to capture all the stills, clips and drone footage... that's before even stitching it together into a final piece of this length yet so polished. My congratulations go out to you David.

@@davidskauen6146 Hi Ollie that makes the group swell as I also intend to do the pilgrimage. During late 60s and early 70s, I saw this film in the splendor of 70 mm, Cinema Scope, 35 mm , 16 mm and even 8 mm in a small theater in Hyderabad, India, consisting of only 44 seats. Such was my passion I rather chased the movie where ever and whenever it was screened. A total of 16 times in theatres and more than hundred times on TV after video CDs came. Now my daughter lives in Frankfurt, I sure am making this pilgrimage.

Fellow Norwegian here. This one hit close to home. For I too saw "Where Eagles Dare " ("Ørneredet" in Norwegiqn) on NRK TV as a child, and it left a permanent mark on me. Buying it on VHS and later DVD, watching it every christmas holiday as a tradition. Something about all the snow in the movie. A few years ago I visited Werfen and the castle. Seeing this video makes me want to go back - in the wintertime. A beautiful homage to a classic movie. Stunning filming and great soundtrack on this - just like the real movie.

I saw this movie when it first came out, the first thing that struck me was the snare drum at the beginning it got louder and louder as each drum came in then, a big opening chords of the trombones. Made my hair on the back of my neck stand on end. A the movie was just the same. A fantastic film. Went to the castle in 2018, so that’s off my bucket list. I have video, DVD and a Blue Ray Special addition. Well done you for making this film, really enjoyed it. Ron Goodwin composed the music.

This is a movie from an era where it was not all about special effects, an era when there was time and no need to rush and it all comes together: actors, script, ambiance, locations, atmosphere, music, story, it just works to make a movie truly great. I had it on VHS as well, and I still play it on DVD regularly, with more then adequate audio to engulf you while watching. . A huge, huge compliment to you: this fan-documentary is extremely well done, an absolute joy to watch, thank you!

Hi Eva! Amazing to hear!! Wow! Thank you so much for sharing this info. I truly love the work of Eddie PowelI. He is a true stunt man legend. He did stunts until he was 70 years old. For Eastwood later also, and for many many others including films like Robin Hood (Kevin Costner), Indiana Jones, Aliens, James Bond, Batman. Amazing work! Thank you.

@@davidskauen6146 - he loved to talk about the movies he was in. He also did stunts for Christofer Lee, one could believe they were twins! They were so alike! He used to practise fist fighting in front of my face (I felt "the breeze") and sometimes he jumped from the second floor shouting like Tarzan and landed in front of me on the first floor! I spent Christmas in England during my time as an au-pair. We received a big parcel from Harrods that Christmas, filled with "goodies", a present from Barbara Bach (Rosemary, Eddies wife, was occupied with the Bond-film "The spy who loved me).

The film is one of my top five films. I first saw it as a child many years ago and loved it ever since. I’ve forgotten how many times I’ve watched it. Love it.

I saw this movie with my family in 1969 in NYC at a theater on Broadway. It was pure magic! Since then it has been one of my all time favorites and I too am afflicted with the lore of the film and its adventure. I often wonder if this kind of film could ever be done again and marvel at the fact it was made in the first place. For some reason this brilliant body of work really gets under your skin. Thanks for sharing your discoveries.

Hello David, very well done. Chapeau for your work. For me as an Upper Austrian it is not so far away to visit these places. It was nice to see this, because I really like this movie too. For the next time I walk through Lofer, Ebensee and Werfen with a special view.

David, this is an excellent film! I congratulate you. Like you, I have had a life-long fascination with the original movie. The on-location filming added a realistic quality, and I watched it on TV countless times as a kid, with my dad. My DVD is worn thin from playing so many times. As I write this today, we are having a big snowstorm in my little city of Dover, NH. I look out the windows and imagine being on the mission to infiltrate Werfen. I would someday like to visit the locations, but if that never happens, I will have your film to take me there! Thanks for sharing this with your fellow fans.

Nice to see the filmlocations for Where eagles dare. I have just seen Hohenwerfen castle from a bus window. I was actually in Switzerland last summer and visited Richard Burtons and Alistair MacLeans graves. I also got to see Richards house.

This film is my all time favourite... I first watched it when I was around 14 years old and only discovered it by accident whilst channel hopping. The first time I saw it I didn't see it in it's entirety, only about 3 quarters. I was immediately immersed watching it. I have now seen this film hundreds of times as I became obsessed with it. I have always dreamed of visiting the same locations as you have. Maybe one day I will. Thank you for sharing this magical experience.

Amazing! Since childhood fan of this movie! Have visited Lofer in 2014 (stayed there 10 days on vacation about a kilometre from "Zum Wilden Hirsch" and didn't even know it or realize it was actually a film location until this evening...) but also watched the movie there and the next day went to Werfen and Schloss Adler and also made a then and now photo shoot. Your video is great, loved watching it and thanks for sharing it!

Thank you David for this lovely video. You really managed to capture how hardcore WED fans perceive this iconic film. All the components in your video work perfectly together, the mixture of stunning winter shots, chilling vibe, and nostalgia is spot on. It makes me very emotional and also happy that there are people who feel it the same way. I believe your work really encapsulates how and why people still love this film. Tricky mission definitely acomplished.

David, found your film via Mark Felton. I first saw Where Eagles Dare in late 1969 (Movies took a while to get to us in Belfast) and the spell still hasn't been broken. I visited the castle and Werfen in the summer by train and when i got home i watched the film pausing dozens of times to compare my photographs.Your film captures the essence of why I love the film. It turns out also that the film's attraction is infectious - both my son and daughter love it too. Thanks for your beautiful tribute.
