Hi, Michael here, the person interviewed in this video. I'd like to add a few observations that I didn't mention during the interview. First of all, for those questioning how I got Medicare for free in the U.S. (with a few claiming I was making things up!), as a low income Californian I was eligible for Medi-Medi, which paid my monthly premium and all my meds. Secondly some background, for those who want to jump up and move to my small city. I've lived in and traveled to Brazil for the past 22 years. I speak fluent Portuguese and have Brazilian in-laws to call on when I need help. So ask yourself:. Could you live in a small city far off the tourist path, in a town with no English speakers? If yes, great! But for most it's more realistic to start in a large city with more support, and of course the cost of living is going to be higher in a place like Rio than in my backwater.

This was a terrific interview. Regarding the automatic 180 days in Mexico: we landed CDMX from Canada mid November. Our plan was to stay 95 days, and have return tickets for mid February but knew we could extend if we felt like it. We asked for 180 days for flexibility. Flat out NO. Then said how about 120? We might not want to go back to Canada in February. He spent a lot of time leading through our heavily stamped passports, then gave us a visa stamp for 180 days. I guess he recognized we travel a lot are retired and aren't a danger to be working. We spend a lot of money here. Not bargain travelers.

I agree with the other folks who post here about this video. It is important to note that he is in the lower cost interior of Brazil,...where most expats will typically not end up. I am so pleased that he is soooo happy where he resides now. Simply tremendous. It is also important to note that he lives an exciting and fullfilling life on US Social Security payments. This is actually a big deal, given that $1500 US will not get far at all in the states. Bravo to Michael for doing his research and finding a happy place that is modern, within a geographic area where costs are low and the culture is rich. Michael,... do make a KZfaq channel... you have a great delivery, a compelling story to tell and potential for nice success. Good on you, mate.

I pay my in-laws $100 a month for the small "in-law" apartment for the time being, before my Brazilian spouse to be and I find a larger place maybe in another city. I too get 4 medications that were prescriptions in the USA, but here are not presciptions here in Brazil. At the pharmacy I pay about $10 for each one for the month. I have gone to the local SUS clinic for a bad congestion this year that was diagnosed as walking pneumonia that cleared up after 10 days with about $50 in medications. The clinic visit was free. My boyfriend/spouse to be is my translator as I am having difficulty picking up Brazilian Portuguese. I have lived in Brazil for 10 years now and it wasnโ€™t as inexpensive when we moved here in 2012, my wife is Brazilian and we were transferred here with her job, plus we have two kids, so itโ€™s a different experience than Michael, the dollar was only worth $R1.60 to the Brazilan Real, it is now worth over $R5.20, so things here are 1/5th the cost of the US and the food is great here, the weather, the doctors and dentists and people are great too, the difference we have is we have private insurance which is far better than US health insurance, no copays, no deductibles and everything paid at 100% as well as dental insurance too, but he is right too about the public health system here, itโ€™s pretty good if you need it for certain things, the other difference is we have our kids in a private Brazilian school which is common here amongst Brazilians because Brazilians believe the public schools arenโ€™t good, it can be expensive depending on the school, our kids are in a medium priced school, so the cost is about $1,200 US per month, thatโ€™s our biggest expense, my wife already owned the apartment we live in here in Sรฃo Paulo which is like Michaelโ€™s, all amenity building with a pool, gym and courtyard and playroom for kids as well as a space to have parities. We only pay a condominium fee which is $267 per month, the upside is there are public universities here which are virtually free, so paying for private elementary and high school usually gives you a better chance into getting in one of the public universities. Even the private universities are a lot less expensive here than in the US, approximately $3,000 - $6,000 per year US, also, we live in Sรฃo Paulo which is the most expensive city in Brazil and we live in a neighborhood which is the equivalent to Greenwich Village in NYC. Michael is correct about the bureaucracy here, like all Latin American countries, it is mind numbing. I have an American friend thatโ€™s the same age as Michael and he married a Brazilian and moved down here in 2017, his income here is the same as Michaelโ€™s, he lives off his monthly social security. So, heโ€™s spot on about costs, at least for now, if the economy gets better here, that will change back to what it was like 10 years ago. Heโ€™s also right about the safety in Brazil, itโ€™s highly overblown and even by Brazilians sometimes. Iโ€™ve never been mugged, only had my phone snatched, which is the most common type of robbery here and itโ€™s generally delivery guys on motorcycles called motoboys here.

Hi, Dan & Quang, I enjoyed your interview with Michael. What a jolly man you can see he is happy and contented and loves Brazil. I think the majority of violent crime is in the major cities once you're away from the cities and tourist areas it would be as safe as it can be, he mentioned Mexico where he stayed in Mexico City. Back in the day I lived for around two years and found it the most corrupt place I had ever been. The worst of it is police corruption. I got shaken down by them a few times and there is nothing one can do, who are you gonna call, ghostbusters haha. I am still seeing reports of gang killings in Tulum but it gets hushed up. Personally, after a few long stays in Mexico, I would not recommend retirement purely because in the end I did not feel safe and peace of mind is most important to me. Take care GOD Bless you and yours. M

I do appreciate your reply, sir. I just spent 4 years in Mexico. 2 in Chapala, and 2 in CDMX. I have never had a problem with the police. I've been to Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Barra de Navidad, Rosarito, Ensenada, and Tijuana. Matamoros also. It is no different than in the USA. You hear the same kind of stories, in your own home town. And yes they do happen. I felt apprehensive when I first arrived in Chapala. And my first trip to Guadalajara was like "hold on tight". But in a very short time, all of that disapated. I feel as safe in the places I've been as any where else in the US and other countries. Stay away from drugs and getting sloppy drunk in public, and you'll be fine. I went out with a buddy in Chapala. He wanted to go shoot pool. So we went to this little bar and he started drinking shots of Tequila. I took his car keys. I was not drinking. He fell a couple times, so I told him it was time to go. So he staggers outside, and just as we hit the sidewalk, a police truck turned the corner. He went right up to them, joking with them, and they were laughing. He did speak spanish, so he really had those guys going. I drove him home and all was well. It's just what you make of it. I was eating some really good pazole in this small restaurant in Mexico City. 3 uniformed policemen came in to eat. So I finished before them, and I told the waitress to bring me their tab, which I paid, and walked out. About a half block down the street, I hear someone calling after me. I turned and those policeman were running toward me. They just wanted to thank me for my kindness. One guy looked like he was about to cry. Kindness and a smile makes you an ambassador for good will. Wherever you go, don't try to change the place to be like America or wherever you live. It's their country. They have a right to live the way they want. Like it or leave it. But don't complain. That just ruins the whole experience. For them, and for you. :)

Just don't drink the water or use their ice. Bottled water is the way. I couldn't wait to get back to the USA after getting sick from drinking a soda with contaminated ice cubes. I kissed the ground when I got off the plane from Rio de Janeiro and Sau Paolo. I never went back again. My next destination was Tokyo, Japan. I loved it ! After that I ended up in Israel on the Mediterranean Sea. I love it !

@@sangroncito7551 Yes, of course they might ask you why you need 180 days. And you're right, it depends on who is giving you the Visa, but if you are legitimately going to stay the 180 days and you can prove it, they will give it to you.

@@billyakin3301 Not true. Since this crackdown began, people have shown itineraries, reservations, etc for long stays, and have as little as a week stamped in their passport. It depends on the airport, the immigration agent, etc., and nothing is guaranteed. This is why many people are getting residency visas now.

There are about 15 to 20 thousand expats in the Lake Chapala area. There are also some 50 nursing homes and assisted living places. I've visited several of them. The care and kindness is amazing. 1/2 the price of what you'd pay in the USA. Non narcotic prescription drugs can be purchased over the counter in Mexico. The cost was cheaper than my co pay wit the VA. I have a couple of friends with serious med issues, one has surgery. Very good quality. I got 2 root canals and crowns while there. Total cost, $300 US for both. Very professional. Imagination can be a cruel task master. Facts are like turning on a bright light in a dark room. Try to get official information above personal opinions. And just go with it. If you do need surgery and such, if you don't have insurance, you must pay cash BEFORE the surgery.
