Alor Setar is the state capital of Kedah, Malaysia. It is a tranquil little town filled with nice people, great food and lots of paddy fields and the sea!
We decided to take a little family vacation to Alor Setar, Kedah as we haven’t been there before. Watch the video to see exactly what is in Alor Setar and discover why we love it there!
Hi Everyone, we are Fran and John, the Corporate Breakout Couple. We retired in 2020 at the age of 40 in Singapore, and moved to Penang in 2022 to spend time with family and friends. Alor Setar is just one of the many towns that we have visited in the last 1 year and we don’t plan to stop!
We hope you enjoy watching this video, do let us know in the comment section if you like it! We welcome any queries you may have on Malaysia as well. Do share this video with your friends and family!
With lots of love - Fran and John

Thank you for stopping by. Being raised in AOR, now the trend has changed. More younger people choose to stay and start their business in Alor Setar. We are hoping more jobs opportunities will be available in AOR :)

The current Mediacorp channel 8 drama 金色大道 "All That Glitters", was shot partially in Alor Setar in Malaysia (Pekan Melayu, Pekan Cina, Old Railway Station). All That Glitters follows the rags-to-riches story of three tight-knit friends (starring Jeremy Chan, Ayden Sng and Desmond Tan) who aspire to be rich and successful.

Good hotel to stay in Alor Setar is Fuller Hotel. Previously recommended by Patrick Teoh (Niamah guy). It is just a walking distance from Aman Central and all the food haunts in Jalan Putera.

Alor Star (sorry, I still like the old British colonial spelling 'Star', not 'Setar'!😂) is my hometown. 90% of my relatives still live in AS, but I myself lived there only up to 18 years old. After that I came to KL-Selangor to study at a local college/university, then went abroad for further studies, and then came back to work, live & raise a family in KL-Selangor area and have never gone back to live in Alor Star till now. I go back to AS maybe once or twice a year since I left it for good at 18. I got my basic elementary and high school education in Alor Star. I was actually born in Sik, a remote district in Kedah, but raised in Alor Star since age 5. Frankly, without trying to upset anybody, I think Alor Star is a very boring town. Nothing much to do there, not much attractions in Loqstaq (our Kedah way of calling it!) to attract tourists compared to places like Melaka, KL, Penang, Johor Baru etc. There is not even a zoo here like in Taiping, or a river cruise like Melaka, or towering iconic skyscrapers like in KL, a pristinely beautiful lake gardens like in Taiping, pristine sandy beaches like in Terengganu etc. But the good thing is that my hometown Alor Star has a lot good eating places, especially Malay dishes. I still love Alor Star, boring it may be, because it is my hometown, my mother's hometown, my grandparents hometown, my friends' hometown and where 90% of my immediate and extended family members and relatives still live. Each time I go back to Alor Star, I no longer explore it, I just stay at my mom's house.
