It’s dangerous to take your kids phone away when they are going out maybe to school or to a friends house they should always have a phone. Take it away when they are at home and safe

So strange to hear. After growing up with Fred range of a 5 mile area starting at age 4 in a large city in 80s. All you had to do was be home by dark. Everyone knew stranger danger etc. we were always in packs anyway. Even daycare let anyone over age 5 go play in the woods without adults. You definitely don’t need a phone. They are a handy tool but not a necessity.

CJ Holt yes, but if you child goes missing there’s a bigger chance they will be found as you can track the phone, or they can use the phone to call for help, really in 2019 if you don’t give you kids a phone (if they go out alone) that’s not safe, these things were made to make life easier, and u don’t need to give them an iphone, a basic £20 one will do the same thing.

@@funsizedi88 this is the vibe I got too. like his dad was more "traditional" and wanted a "normal" son who was outgoing and played football and went to parties, whereas Macin was shy and quiet and just liked to watch anime and hang out at home. Sometimes people want/need to move on. Sometimes it is the best for you. Let's hope nothing ever happens to someone you love but, personally speaking, i wouldn't want my family to stop living because of me. I think their happiness is more important than my justice. The only sad thing is that if there's foul play, the person who's guilty should be held accountable. But that's not allways possible. Aditionally, parents have a duty to the children that they have. Missing or not. You can still honor someone's memory without affecting your other kids and your love for them. The most important thing these Times is for families to get together and focus on eachother and Share love and support. More ofthen than not, parents of missing children tend to divorce or emotionally neglect their other kids

This case has hit close to home. My best friend was in a similar frustrating situation with his parents. He was meant to graduate in the next year. He excelled at school, was meant to go to med school. His parents controlled him whenever they could. Our friend group played WoW and he wouldn't be allowed to play on school nights, only on weekends. I remember when he would talk to us about how excited he was to get out of there and flee like his siblings had. The last night we had ever spoken to him, his mom was mad about his track and field results and destroyed his computer. She tore it from the wall, threw it, just total chaos. He spoke to one of our other friends about it and said he wouldn't be able to get on for awhile. The following week, his dad found him dead in his car. He had shot himself. It'll be four years next week, and this case just makes my heart ache for my best friend. I hope Macin is happy in the life he lives now, if he is still with us. If he isn't, I hope he rests easy and has found peace.

I think each situation is different. My teenage son has ASD and ADHD and his internet usage now has to be closely monitored after he was bullied online to the point of trying to take his own life. We thought we were helping him manage his online life responsibly, but didn't see what was hidden. He is slowly recovering, but the internet can be such a dark place. Some people may think we are strict, but he simply didn't understand that he was being bullied because of his ASD. Too much screen time also affects his sleep so we have to be careful about that. There is no one size fits all solution here.

Absolutely, even if they restricted his use for his own good, coming down on kids by taking away all choices is destructive in the extreme. And, having expectations that are unrealistic is the most destructive thing you can do to a child. Studying psychology, this is considered more harmful than most abuse because the child has nowhere to go, because they feel they are not good enough no matter what they do.

I hope he didn't meet foul play. But to my fellow parents, you MUST talk to your kids. You cannot bulldoze over them forever. Our children must trust us more than anything. They must feel safe enough that they can call us if they take drugs or get drunk at a party, even if they snuck out to get to that party. They must trust beyond anything that they confide in us as a child to parent without fear of punishment! Our parenting must evolve as they grow into their personalities.

I don't think any of that is that weird tbh. My parents never saw me off to school in the morning. I wanted to sleep in as much as I could, got up in just enough time to get dressed, brush my teeth, do whatever to my hair, and walked right out the door. They let me just do my thing. As for the siblings, it could be a sign for sure, but also remember Macin moved from Canada right before his senior year, so all the other kids were adults, maybe in college, maybe had jobs. I can see them not wanting to uproot if they didn't have to and then also have to deal with visa stuff, which can be a huge pain. Their dad also didn't move with Macin and his mom right away so the siblings could've been with him still. Like I said, it could for sure be a sign, but I don't think it's much of a red flag.

When I was Mason's EXACT age (17 and in my senior year of HS) my parents were so controlling I ran away from home. They took my car away and I had never had a cell phone before. They took my car away because I had to take my sister to school (who's four years younger) and her school started at 8 but (I was so advanced I could have graduated of my junior year and my parents didn't let me) I didn't have to go to school until 11 a.m. but my parents expected me to wait at school until my classes started. So one day I was so bored I went to the Catholic Church across the street to pray and my parents (who had a tracking device on my car) found out and sold the truck my grandfather had given me. I felt so depressed and I had no control over my life so I ran away from home and got married at 17! Just to escape them. (In my state 17 is an adult and I'm allowed to do whatever). I was a good kid who never went out at all, never drank, got straight A's, cleaned the house and did all my chores, never partied, never argued or talked back to them, I wanted their approval so badly I literally never did anything wrong ect. I felt so suffocated and unfairly persecuted for no reason. So I called my guy friend up to see if I could live with him and if he would have said no I was secretly determined to kill myself, but he said yeah I could stay with him and we ended up married. My parents ruined my life. I had a full ride to university due to my grades and credits and ACT score my junior year but they wouldn't let me go. So I left that night. I legitimately would have killed myself if my guy friend wouldn't have been able to let me live with him. I didn't want to live like that anymore. I felt I had nothing to live for and no matter how perfect I was it was never perfect enough. It was my parents fault. Not saying it was Mason's parents fault exactly but....... If they had treated him with respect like the adult he was, he wouldn't have run away or, God forbid, have committed suicide. Hindsight is 20/20. Don't smother your kids. You will drive them to do ANYTHING to escape. Let them make their own decisions and own mistakes at that age. Learn a lesson form Mason's story AND my story. Don't be a smother. Be a supportive parent who allows their child to be themselves.

My husband struggled with drugs and became homeless, he went to LA when he was 17. He met a lot of other homeless people and many of them just wanted to restart. The good thing is that there were programs that help homeless people so my husband said he didn't struggle too much. He also went to live in Tijuana for a while before he decided to turn his life around. I truly believe Macin could have done something similar and I hope he is well.

Julz XD I don’t mean that the mother was a bigot, just that my parents told me it was a sin and that gays go to hell growing up, and that they’d never have a gay person in their house. That affects someone when they think their parents don’t accept them, even if their parents do. The church of Latter Day Saints also doesn’t have a great track record with supporting the lgbt community either but that’s besides the point because I know not all people in that church feel that way!

100% agree. I never told my parents I was bisexual because they made a lot of casual homophobic comments. Recently I came out in anger because of they still make these kind of comments regularly and it pisses me off. My dad immediately got mad at ME and said, "well if I knew you were gay I wouldn't have made fun of them in front of you, I thought this was a safe space for me to be myself" ......... Y'all. This hurt deeply to watch. As an abuse survivor myself also raised in a cult, there are so many red flags in this story. The quiet kid, who doesn't connect well with others, well behaved, his family moving countries. The anime character on the bench dedicated to him is really a slap in the face to Macin. This FB group posted at the end is a huge phishing scam filled with abusive parents. Never give ANYONE you don't know information about someone. This video seems to focus a lot on the internet being shut off bit, but I can assure you that this sort of control goes way beyond a parent taking their (not child's) internet away. He has run away before, and has been hospitalized with depression. He is not feeling validated or loved. I hope Macin is doing well, and managed to get his identification and get his life to e he is truly free, and I hope that people will let it go, and let him go. I hope he has found a new name, and a new life.

How/why is that a slap in the face to him!?! It seems like his family was trying to dedicate it to him in the best way they knew how. There's no proof his family was abusive or in a cult. you're making a lot of assumptions about someone you don't even know. if I were his family I'd prefer for him to at least reach out to let me know he was okay somewhere. it's incredibly selfish to not do so otherwise.

It’s absolutely INSANE to me that the dad wouldn’t be apart of the shows or televised interviews involving the disappearance. We don’t know what happened to Macin, but what we DO know is that he felt trapped and felt so much like a disappointment that he wrote about it AND had already previously tried to run away. It’s super clear that his dad didn’t understand him. The dad was very much a “man’s man” and was athletic and went to the gym often, but Macin was sensitive and creative, liked to keep to himself, and loved anime.. Macin was more of a mama’s boy. (I don’t mean that in a bad or insulting way) Because of all this, you would think his dad would make it a point to go on tv and show Macin that he isn’t disappointed in him and that he accepts and loves him for who he is. But instead, if Macin is alive and saw that his dad isn’t participating in the search, it sends the message that his dad doesn’t really care that he’s gone and is still disappointed in him.. which is why he wanted to run away in the first place.

I had more details to give and she just asked me what city and state. I live in Ventura County, ca and work for human services agency and know how important reporting is. I even reached out to the mom and offered to give details but didn’t hear back from anyone. This was a year ago same week of the comicon convention. I understand the possibility of false sightings but this guy stood out to me.I remember this case when Danielle covered it and it hit my heart bc my son has a speech impediment. I explained to the officer that He caught my attention bc he was super tall and wasn’t dressed for the area. Very pale skin and seemed like he was red tanned around the nose and cheek area. Like he had been walking in the sun a lot- like a transient. Made his blue eyes stand out a lot. I was driving and even turned back to do a double look but was on a one way street and took some time to get back. It was near a bus and train station. It was the 70’s so there wasn’t anywhere for my parents to go to get me help. I know it was hard for them because they didn’t want to push me in the wrong direction if that makes sense. Another thing I realize he was 17 but one of the parents should’ve checked on him in the mornings even if it was to just tell him good morning. Maybe that’s old fashion but I don’t know. He’s still a kid. I definitely think he and his dad didn’t mesh well together. Two men in the same house wanting control with the father being a man’s man and very dominant. Not a good mix at all.

It hurts my heart his parents didn't tell him they Loved him or have a good day before he left for school. I couldn't imagine hearing my child up and not going in to wish them a good day.

That’s so sad . I used to get annoyed when my mom ask for a kiss goodbye and pray for me before I leave home but my mom said it’s bad luck to not give your kid their blessing that bad things happen and it’s true actually I’ve heard a few times how someone would forget to get their blessing from their mom and something bad does happen after so never feel annoyed or embarrassed if your parents does this at least you got parents who love you enough to give a fe w seconds of their time to show love to their child

I wish there was a clip of his voice. And I absolutely think he ran away as well. I hope he is watching this somehow and sees all these comments that hope that he's living well somewhere.

If he’s out there I wish he’d find a way to mail a note to his mom to let them know he’s alive. I’m a mother. I can’t imagine the pain of not having any answers. Macin if you’re out there I hope you’re well.

My thoughts exactly! I couldn't imagine. I wish he'd send a letter, even just a 2 minute call from a disposable phone. Just let her know he's alive, safe, and happy. If he's out there, I don't think he can comprehend just how heartbreaking band confusing this is for her.

Being put through what he was put through I will ask him how can I support him the most, his mother and father made q child and thought they had a toy robot, didn't acknowledge his feelings. Even though they say his mom was the better one, i disagree. She was just as bad but the poor child needed someone and therefore tried to attach himself to her. But never got the true love, they never acknowledged his feelings, his personality etc. They deserve to "suffer" while he is i really hope living his best life

So sad because it seems like he and his mother had such a close relationship, and then the Dad really seemed to make the household tense. There’s always more going on behind closed doors.

Reba Nerk you don’t know that she didn’t. Just because the father took away his stuff doesn’t mean they weren’t going to discuss it later. It was the middle of the night.

I feel like this is like the 1950’s cookie cutter family where the dad thinks he is the man of the house and only needs to works while the mom cleans cooks takes care of the kids and probably is going to end up working

I hope he’s okay.. I identify with this story on several levels.. his home situation is so like my own sons.. super strict dad in one house and mom who gets it in the other.. thankful that I was able to get my son to a better situation and now he watches his anime happily and doesn’t have to threaten to run away ... I cannot imagine how his mom gets through without knowing where he is.. I really really hope he didn’t come to any harm and he’s out living his life 💕

My mom at one point when I was in high school thought I was addicted to anime. I also skipped school a couple times by hidding in a bush until my mom left for work and I went back to my house for the day. I feel really connected to Macin.

But if he was depressed living there and was doing fine in his new home up until he disappeared, why go back?

I also thought of that, but it doesn't sound like he had any friends there really. Canada is not exactly the first choice destination for the homeless either. It's possible, but I really doubt it myself

@@jasonhaynes2952 If he'd headed for Canada, he'd have taken his passport (which was left behind) unless he planned on slipping in illegally but you'd have to be pretty slick and he is/was just a kid, essentially.
