I think this was when Laura cemented her fandom nickname 'Madame Airlock' she earned when she has Leoben tossed out back in S1 :D I always loved the role reversal, she is the pragmatic leader to Adama's emotional one. It is actually very nice that she can make those cold calculated calls even if you disagree with them. It does make for a very compelling storytelling.

As a fan of both franchises thinking about how frustrating some of the behavior is: TNG shows humanity through a lens that is how we *should/can* be. BSG holds up a mirror that says *this is what we are: Humanity is messy*

@@darkphoenyx27 TNG exists in a universe far more friendly to humanity. In the BSG universe, Wolf 359 would be kind of a bad day. TNG is filled with many advanced species, many of whom humanity somehow managed to form into a huge alliance in our spacefaring infancy, cuz we're just that special. BSG is just humanity and the killer robots they created, with no Vulcans to lift us from the ruins of our stupidity.

Yep, the frustrating things the characters do don't make sense and are inconsistent because *people* often don't make sense and are inconsistent. Add on to that, these are all tremendously traumatized people who are living through a genocide, have lost almost all if not all of their family, and who are stuck living in metal boxes in space.

I wouldn't be too hard on the humans for calling the Cylons names or thinking the worst of them. They did, after all, wipe out almost the entire human race in a sneak attack and are now trying to commit genocide by finishing off the last survivors. Under the circumstances, humans are entitled to think anything they want about them. Or, for that matter, do anything they want with Cylons that fall into their grasp.

It’s the nature of this show that it makes you suffer through some pretty tough low points, but in return you get some of the best high points TV has to offer. But even in the tough ones, there are usually bright points. I love Dee’s conversation with Adama in this episode. I love how brave she is for speaking her mind. You could she that she was scared, but she knew it needed to be said. And credit to Adama, he listened. Maybe not right away, but I think maybe he knew what she would say and that’s why he asked her to join him. As far as “Madame Airlock” Roslin goes, I do think you’re being maybe a bit unfair. We as viewers have clearly been shown that Cylons are more than just killing machines, but Roslin really hasn’t. Every cylon she has encountered has been a bomber, saboteur, assassin or otherwise actively trying to wipe out humanity. We know that Caprica Sharon is “good,”But I don’t think you can expect her to believe that. Anyway, fantastic reaction as always. Sorry if it sounds like I’m trying to argue with you about your feelings. I’m not. Love your takes on things. Just giving a different perspective.

Don't forget, Kara and Helo didn't even know Adama had been shot- let alone by whom. Likewise, it hasn't been two months since every other human was murdered (by Sharon's people); people are absolutely still working thru their initial trauma of the Cylon Holocaust, as well as trying to figure out their new "lives".

I love this episode because a secondary or even tertiary character basically saves humanity by showing the honesty and vulnerability none of our protagonists could manage in this moment, and that little act of courage helps the rest of them get there as well. Roslin, Apollo, and Adama are all REELING, and that’s the moment where Adama pulls out of his tailspin and sets him on a path to help the others too. Genuinely, Anastasia Dualla straight-up saves humanity through a little honesty and vulnerability. You guys compare this to TNG where everyone has that in spades, but TNG is so utopic. Those moments still happen in BSG, but they’re usually - and realistically - the result of a lot of internal struggle.

I hear you Paula, but on TNG most of the conflict is external, and every character is an exemplar of virtue and reason. It's artificial. BSG has conflict, both internal and external. It is far more authentic. The examples are more extreme, but then we are looking at a society that has already collapsed, and they are constantly on the brink. These people are flawed and damaged. This makes them very frustrating sometimes.

Five Cylons have been revealed so far: Leoben (interrogated by Starbuck and airlocked by Roslin), Doral (Public Affairs guy left at Ragnar Station in the miniseries, later a suicide bomber), Simon (the doctor from The Farm), Six (Six), and Sharon/Boomer. There are seven to go. Also, negotiation and compromise only work as long as each party is able to give up something the other party wants; thus not all conflicts can be resolved by talking them through. The conflict between Adama and Roslin at the end of S1 is a case in point. Roslin demanded that Adama send Starbuck and the captured Cylon Raider back to Caprica; Adama said No, because - by all the information available to either of them - Roslin's proposal was, objectively, completely insane. What would a compromise solution even have looked like? Should Starbuck have taken the captured Raider and flown _halfway_ back to Caprica? The "diplomatic solution" would have been for Roslin to accept the already agreed-upon partition of responsibilities and take "no" for an answer.

I don't think everyone is acting stupid, as such. At least not in the way they often do in American TV shows. Like Adama for example. I don't think it's quite sunk into him that he's not waging a normal war. His mind still operates on a level of "If we lose this battle, we're gonna lose some units", when it should be operating on the level of "If we don't put the civilian fleet first, none of this matters, because we're gonna go extinct." He hasn't adjusted to that way of thinking yet. Roslin is paranoid and tripping balls. In a way, she *deeply* understands the stakes, and doesn't want to take *any* risks. That means not giving Sharon the chance to betray them, even if she has been nothing but trustworthy thus far. Speaking of paranoia, here's a bit more: Apparently a certain number of characters' names were put in a hat and drawn at random. So... Happy speculatng :D

So!! Recipe time!! Banana split cake! Step one, get your banana bread recipe out. Either your grandma's or go Google one you like. Now, instead of making it in loaf pans, you make it in cake pans. You're gonna wanna make two, because we're gonna layer this bad boy. Adjust the recipe size as needed. (Waits staring at watch) Do you have the cakes ready? Okay, next step! Between the layers, you slather on a thick helping of banana pudding. Then, layers stacked, you frost it with cold hot fudge sauce from the ice cream section of the grocery store. Not hot; it'll slob all around, and soak into the cake, and we don't want that. Cold, it goes on like peanut butter. That's how we want it. Might want 2-3 jars (depending on cake size); they don't give you much. Now, you take spray whipped cream, and put a circle around the bottom, a circle around the boundary between the layers, and then coat the top. Now, everywhere there's whipped cream, you stick on banana slices, and halved Maraschino cherries. If it's the hot months like now, you're gonna wanna refrigerate this sucker. Ideally, serve each slice with a scoop (or two, or three) of vanilla ice cream. If you have any leftover pudding or fudge kicking around, slap that on the ice cream. Normally, I say "enjoy!" or "you're welcome!" but who am I kidding? This thing will give you a flavor-gasm that'll take you through a wormhole to another universe. I see no reason to be false modest about this one.

People are screwing up left right and center in the story. But remember every single person in the show is suffering massive PTSD. The Colonies had somewhere between 20 and 40 BILLION people. Now there are less than 50,000 humans left, and they know just how badly they're dancing on the knife's edge, and they know the Cylons are still chasing them, still looking to snuff out the rest of them. Probably every last person on the ship lays awake a few hours at night shaking in terror and hoping they make it to Earth, and then the rumors that there is no Earth, compound the stress. They are going to overreact to things.

It's always frustrating watching people in films and TV make dumb decisions because viewers usually have more information than the characters have, but one of the things this show does especially well is force difficult choices on both the characters and the viewers, and so the right decisions are not always apparent. There will be a lot more to discuss about that topic at some point in the future...

This show really doesn't have many likeable characters. I didn't like Starbuck, at first, but she grew on me and I have to say she's one of the best characters in the show (whether or not she's likeable to people). Tigh is another character I didn't like initially, but grew on me. Agathon is probably the most likeable character in the show.

I'll tell you who else is a Cylon... Kidding.. no, I won't. Half the fun is the guessing... But I will say there will be surprises and heartbreak and shifting opinions (on your part) about characters you've both met already and ones you haven't

If y'all watched Lost, those characters probably pissed you off to no end. They NEVER shared with the group, or each other most of the time. So many issues could have been solved if the different "leader" types just sat down and TALKED. Then again, I say that like Lost and BSG, in all their frustration-inducing stressy bessie glory, aren't my two favorite shows of all time. I'm a glutton for punishment and mystery boxes.

Interesting that the Admiral chose someone who wasn't capable of doing his job. Wasn't that Kara's crime against his son? She approved him for a position he wasn't competent to fulfil?

Gotta agree with Paula 100k, the most annoying writing g is when usually smart characters are written as uncommunicative morons who can’t just have an adult conversation. That’s contrived tension in my book.

Have you considered putting Babylon 5 on your watchlist?

Due to Kat's trypophobia, they would not be able to watch any Narns on screen. So no B5 reactions unfortunately.

This was the episode in which I started falling out of love with Roslyn. I really didn't agree withthe way they took her character from then on. But this was the episode in which my undying admiration for Tigh solidified. He couldn't disagree more on Adama's choice of CAG, and made no bones about it in private. In public, however, he supported that decision to the hilt. Adama, of course, chose the kid because he wasn't thinking straight. Being betrayed (as he saw it) four times in a day, by his partner, his surrogate daughter, his actual son and one of his kids - that put him at death's doorstep. It'll mess one's mind. Same with Lee. And a lot of people. RDM famously said (more or less): these people are not the Enterprise crew. They don' always do the right thing and will often frak up brilliantly.

Wasn't the woman at 4:57 and 5:02 Amanda Waller in Smallville? Or at least voiced her in *some* adaptation.

I think that Apollo and The President were justified in their behavior. Not the kiss, that was awkward. But they saw a cylon. They don’t know there are good ones, one that can override their programming.
