Two sugars. This should be shown to actors who want to learn about comedy and timing. I don't know if it was scripted but Paul throwing those words in at the end completely makes this sketch. We've thrown gongs and awards at some very dubious characters who are so-called comedians but if two blokes deserve a Knighthood or at least an OBE it is them.

Did you see that game in Dubai recently ? The female referee was advised not to approach the Arab sponsor & shake his hand after the game as it would offend him !! Harry Enfield was way ahead of his time 👍

Probably more a case of the UAE being so behind the times, most countries have progressed whilst others have stood still.

@MathematicalPhysics Your comparison with French men kissing the cheek as a greeting illustrates your point well. It is certainly true that men in the UK would feel uncomfortable with this form of greeting, even men who are not disgusted by the idea, simply because it is not customary and does not carry the same meaning, as you say. However, this comparison is not equal to the example of the referee in Dubai. That is because it involves hierarchy. I do not speak of some sort of law that says women are inferior to men; cultural hierarchies are somewhat fluid since they arise naturally. Nor do I mean to suggest that hierarchies are bad, because they provide structures which are essential for our societies to operate. However, it is important to understand that in this context, the female gender has been positioned below that of men, and if we decide to examine the reasoning of this to consider whether it is fair or no, we find that it is more or less because women are seen as a kind of property of their husband. Not objectified; as long as the husband is not flawed in himself he will love and care for her. Moreover, this idea of property still persists in the West and many other places, though I think to a lesser degree. Now compare this to the fact that women were not allowed aboard ships. Grossly sexist of course, but the reasoning behind it was pretty sound. In those times it would be very dangerous for women to go aboard ships for obvious reasons, even more so if they became pregnant. And yes, I say "times" because the technology we have now was not present then. This is why I can conclude by saying Dubai needs to grow the fuck up in this regard. The reasoning does fit the circumstances of the present day.

@@hugoclarke3284 you've got this all wrong, it's nothing to do with hierarchy. The male sponsor wouldn't be exactly 'offended' at shaking the lady's hand, he'd most probably enjoy it. But then in arab culture there are certain boundaries, women are afforded a certain respect with regards to physical contact. As the comment above explains, this is considered an inappropriate level of intimacy between two strangers. The sponsor would prefer not to have to explain this awkwardly in the heat of the moment to her, hence she was forewarned about it.

@@mr.safensound4238 Mate, stop beating around the bush, it has nothing to do with 'afforded respect'. It's a strict law in Islam. It's not 'Arab culture', it's an Islamic law.
@mr.safensound42383 жыл бұрын
@@musashidanmcgrath 'Islamic law' isn't applicable here, and especially in this modern day and age. Perhaps it's relevant when you have a religious leader put into that situation to shake hands. But otherwise the extent people choose to apply the religion varies considerably from person to person.
