Read the book a second time just to get ready for the movie. The book was sheer MAGIC with its descriptions of the marsh living, and human nature. Well done, Delia Owens! Thanks Reese Witherspoon for recognizing a truly classic work, and bringing this story to life.

People are so excited by this but imo they didn't get anything right. Kya in the book to me seems a POC. But fine, I could get past that if they nailed everything else. Unfortunately, that's not the case: living on her own in the marsh after her family abandoned her, she wouldn't have looked as squeaky-clean and as she does here. Hollywood version of living rough apparently is impeccably styled hair, (clean!) modern fashion that has vibrant colors and not a fabric wrinkle in sight. Teen/adult Kya looks like your average well off girl going glamping. And even the dirty kid version of her has washed hair. All they did was make it frizzy and put some dust on her skin. Whoever made and styled this movie obviously has no clue about what it's actually about.

I agree that she looks too clean, but she describes herself as "white trash" in the books and talks about how she stuck out like a sore thumb when she visits Jumpin's neighbourhood.
@elintilia27902 жыл бұрын
@@SnazzyArcade The book describes her hair as black, her eyes equally dark and shes very tan at the least. She might call herself white because compared to Jumpin she is but based on the description I wouldn't call her that. Mixed at the very least. But fair enough, the book is pretty ambigious when it comes to this.

@@elintilia2790 Yeah it's also very hard to say whether or not the one guy keeps her a secret because of her race or because she's poor. But given it's the 1960s South I feel like if she was PoC it would have been touched upon more-e.g. would she have been in a segregated school at that point?

@@jennifergoetz7115 great comment. I thought it was obvious she wasn’t black or mixed - not only in the crystal clear references: the author directly describing her as a young white woman; Kya referring to herself as white trash; Kya’s references to others as ‘coloured folk’; her dad using the N word against others as a slur… but the nature of her interactions with other characters would have been totally different and a focal point of the book in their own right if she was black/mixed in the 1960s Deep South - her relationship with 2 white boys, going to a non-segregated school, using the same bus and stores as everyone else. If not for the obvious references to her being white, I think the author would have touched on the nuances of race a lot more if she was in any part black.
