Great video, I stayed on 18BIS right at the bottom for 2 years until recently. It was quiet, safe and the landlord was extremely nice and flexible (sadly I don't have any good contact details). Agreed that 18A and 18B Nguyen Thi Minh Khai are great places to live either to start or long term if you don't need much room. The Hue restaurant is amazing opposite. Couple of things I experienced was to check for curfew's if the family live there (make sure you get an external key) and also if you can have guests as some say no to anyone, others as long as it's not unmarried Vietnamese (which is the law) and others are completely fine with anyone. I'd also say dont stay in the guesthouses in co bac street if you are a girl because I know of several who have been bag snatched down there even during the day.

Hey dude, what's the deal with bringing dates back to my place? Are they allowed inside or is it against the law?

The last time I was in HCMC Lee Hostel on Bue Viene is around $3.50USD on Hostelbookers. I stayed there when I was travelling in Vietnam and for the price it is quite reasonable. The only drawback is that you have to go to the restaurant for WIFI and they are kinda funny about it if you don't buy something. I have a shot of the hostel in one of my videos if anyone is interested in staying there while they get set up with Alex's TEFL course. Really useful video Alex! I just completed my TEFL and I am considering Vietnam as my first teaching destination. Can I just ask..do you have any advice on where could be a good starting country in regards to the teaching experience for first timer? I'm focusing more on developing my teaching methods to begin with, rather than the money aspect. So I would just like to begin somewhere that has reliable schools & employers (such as in Vietnam I imagine) and maybe like you say avoiding backpacker areas while I get tuned in with things. Any advice would be much appreciated & keep up the great work!

Vietnam is great for first time teachers. They do expect a certain level of teaching ability off the bat (which is why I'm always recommending in class courses). There a number of reliable school that you could potentially get work at to develop your teaching methods. Send over your resume and we can see what we can do to help: ninateacher.com/apply

Any leads for a cheap hostel offering a single room (not dorm) close to Thang Long University in Hanoi? I got a teaching job offer but it doesn't include accommodation. So I would rather come over and stay at a cheap hostel while looking for a cheap apartment than pay for an apartment on the internet without viewing the place in person.

I was hoping I get some help or advice on something. I have a Diploma and I have a degree in interior design. I'm currently lecturing for almost a year now at my university. I also hold a TEFL certificate and matric certificate. My problem is this: I'm looking to move to Vietnam on the 26th of November. I currently do now have my degree certificates as I am owing the university a lot of money. This is one of the reasons why I took a decision to move abroad (to pay off my tution fees). I want to understand if I will have an issue with producing a letter from my university stating that I have a degree and diploma but my certificate is being withheld due to outstanding fees. I would obviously authenticate all of this, the letter from the university, my matric certificate and TEFL certificate. Please could you assist me with this case as it's quite a unique one. Regards

Unfortunately your degree certificate is required by the Vietnamese government.

you mentioned on long term leases, they want 2 months deposit and first months rent. Is getting the deposit back at end of the lease hard to do? I know in Thailand it is damn near impossible.
