I played in a golf tournament yesterday and the clubhouse had some seedlings growing in the mulch under a mature JM, I carefully dug up a few and planted them in some solo cups when I got home.plan on going back and looking for more!

I like this idea better than cuttings, because I just watched a video that said it took 2 years to root.

I'm totally amazed that you found these seedlings! I have 2 Japanese maples in my yard (almost 20 years old), and I don't think I've ever seen even a single seedling from either of them. I admit, I only got involved with propagation and gardening this past summer, but I've always been very observant in my yard, watching for cool or interesting growth. Maybe I just missed them. We have a lot of rabbits (and other undetermined animals around) so maybe they got to them first? It's only February now, and I'm in Buffalo, NY, so we're still very deep in snow (zone 6), but if I want to scout for seedlings this spring, when might they first sprout? Maybe I could find some before anything else disrupts the. Thanks for your videos on Japanese Maples! Your success with the seedlings is amazing!

Thank you! The areas under my trees are mulched with a very fine shredded mulch, and I think that that makes a big difference. You should see seedlings in Late April/early May (possibly into early June in your area).

@@JonnyMaple Thanks for your reply! We're into our second week of unseasonably warm, sunny weather, and after 4 months in the fridge (with about 40% already germinated), I planted my Japanese Maples in a tote about 12 days ago. They're just starting to come up, but I'm grateful for the seedling information! I'm hopeful that I can take that route also!

@@jlnriddick CHECK NOW!!! I've got a few growing under my maples and they're under last year's leaves that fell but we're never blown away. Excited to follow GTs method here of saving and growing them. Ive got a greenhouse for the tough winter months, which I think will help.

@@samsohn Samuel, you're so kind to grab my attention, and you're right! There are two seedlings under one of my trees, and I have no doubt I'll find more! Now that I know what I'm looking for, they aren't that hard to spot! I have 16 JM's outside right now that I grew from seed a year ago. It's a bit hard to tell yet whether they all made it through the winter (which isn't over yet here in Buffalo), but I'm pretty optimistic. They're all around 8-10 inches tall and had beautifully varied leaf color and shape last summer! I actually laughed when I saw your CAPS that said "CHECK NOW", haha!! It was as if you were reading my mind! Thanks again, and good luck with your seedlings!

I've recently discovered hundreds of these after the snow thawed in my garden. Literally hundreds! I'm going to choose the nicest and pot them. In a couple of years, they'll make fantastic gifts.

hahaha...I don't know if I have a guts to ask my neighbors. I have neighbors in our right side of the house has a beautiful weeping habit , one in front or across in my house with dark burgundy color and the other to our left side that has such a beautiful structure. Ahhh, I am so in love with these Japanese maple --it has such an amazing color, structure and different shapes of leaves. I started buying Japanese maples and these trees aren't cheap...
@MBihon20002 жыл бұрын
It' s true they are not cheap! I have a 20 year old Japanese maple, but I never seen it with seeds yet.
@jlnriddick2 жыл бұрын
Do you know your neighbors, or have you maybe just moved in? I seriously doubt they would mind at all (I wouldn't), but you could just explain your excitement at how beautiful their tree is, and ask if you could look around for a seedling or two in an attempt to grow your own. You could also offer to pot a couple of seedlings for them if they'd like to give it a try. Many people are oblivious to what's growing in their yard (other than what they planted themselves) and would be happy for you to grow a few seedlings from "their special tree"! I think you should give it a try. It would be a great icebreaker if you don't know them very well!

Where I live there are about 15 JM trees on the property. eight of them are Tamukeyama and crimson queen 20 year old trees or older. The others are the regular green leaf trees. ( 5 point). I'm seeing many many seedlings growing up under the green trees but none under the lace leaf trees. The ? is on the laceleafs will the seedling have seven points on the leaf? all the seedlings I see have five points on the leaf. So I guess the ? is on the lace leaf trees will the leaves on the seedlings have just 5 points? Yes I'm brand new to Japanese Maple trees and bonsai. I've collected about 10 seedlings and some are 8 to 12 inches tall already. Thanks if you can set me straight.

my 45 year old Japanese Maple has many seedlings soome 2 ft tall and others 2 inches tall but how do I care for them in the winter being in pots ? bring them inside maybe of in my Garage? what to I feed them ? will wormcastings in the soil harm them or worm tea?
@parob72852 жыл бұрын
Keep them outside but avoid frost below - 10 celsius. Nothing to feed after leafdrop. Water little once a month or so. They do winter sleep

Can I put 2-3 seedlings together in a pot as if it is a whole? So I can see a bigger maple tree soon😄
@JonnyMaple2 жыл бұрын
you can, but I recommend giving them each their own pot.
@MikeHunt-lz2hq Жыл бұрын
This will only work if they are from the same seed crop from the same parent tree . This is known as a clump style and it's generally better to plant upwards of 13 or more trees in the same pot with the stems touching otherwise they might not fuse very well or at all .eisen ei bonsai has a tutorial here on KZfaq and you can apply the same method to full size trees not just bonsai
