I love making blanks with aluminum honeycomb, so I decided to stock up on it and sell it too. I have two sizes: 1/4" cell and 1/8" cell, both 3/4" thick in a 5" x 8" sheet. They're available for purchase on my website now: resinwerksstud...
I wanted to find a product that worked best for casting in resin, and I wanted to be able to be able to reorder the same exact product when I needed more. So I got samples sent out to me and tested it out. Somewhat surprisingly, one brand stood out and adhered much better to resin than the others. So, I bought some sheets of it and have plenty to share.
I plan to keep it stocked up, and I definitely plan to keep buying the same exact material. Hopefully, it will help other casters out having a reliable source of aluminum honeycomb for casting.

Is there a plastic alternative where the hexagons don't deform? Thicker walls would also be ok. Little tip to achieve great patterns: 1. pour your resin into the mold 2. seal the bottom of individual holes in the honeycomb sheet 3. put the sheet in the mold 4. Since the sealed holes are not filled with resin, you can fill them up individually with a different colour of resin

I wonder if you could texture the surface of the cells with a small sand blasting gun? I recall seeing one about the size of a air hose spray nozzle. I would try glass beads to dent each cell.

Aluminum can be etched with lye. That could help with the bond if someone wanted to experiment.
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 6 жыл бұрын
I tried etching with a few different products, both acids and bases, didn't increase the bond at all for me. Gotta watch out with etching, it can dissolve the aluminum completely if you don't get the reaction fully neutralized

Hey Zac. Thanks for all you do to help us turners. What do you think about using white vinager to etch the aluminum ? Then use the acetone to clean it ? Would that help the resin adhere better ?
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 6 жыл бұрын
It's my pleasure! It's great to see all the folks including resin into their turning projects. One of the main reasons I started sharing resin casting info in the first place was to introduce more people to the medium. With a lot of help from many others, it's starting to really blow up now =D As for etching, I actually did a few tests trying out both acids and bases on the honeycomb products that didn't adhere as well as the one I went with, and it didn't improve the bond at all. I was actually hoping it would work because the other brands were quite a bit cheaper than the one I went with that worked best. I admit that I don't have any experience with etching, so it may be possible to get better results if someone knows more about the process. One other issue with etching is it creates a chemical reaction that eats away the aluminum. I was always worried that it could be possible for that reaction to continue or start again after you're done with the etching process. I actually heard from someone who said that happened to them, and the aluminum honeycomb actually completely dissolved after the pen had been completed. Overall, I didn't really have any issues turning the blanks that I made with the product I went with. I turned a bunch of pens myself and sent out a bunch for other people to try. As long as you wait till the resin fully cures, and you take care when preparing and turning the blanks, there shouldn't be too many problems.

It's so expensive per sheet, just can't afford to buy a bunch of different sizes unfortunately. One thing that I do sometimes is cast half of it in 1/4" of resin, then cut off the remainder on the bandsaw and recast it. Not ideal I know, but I wanted to mention it just in case it might be trying

Hey Zac, Firstly, thank you. Love your work. I am trying to get a hold of you on your website with no luck??? Please tell me if you’re able to ship to me in Australia???
@ZacHiggins

Thanks Ben, I appreciate it! Unfortunately, I had to stop shipping internationally. Just caused more problems for customers than it was worth :( If you have someone in the states that you trust to forward it to you, you can place an order and have it shipped to their address first. I have a few int'l customers who are doing that. It should cut down the shipping cost and they can just mark it as a gift to save on the import fees

Hey Zac, got my honey comb. What's the best way to cut it up??? Thanks in advance.
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 6 жыл бұрын
Hey David, I just cut it up on my bandsaw using a 1/4" medium tooth count blade. I use a zero clearance throat plate to support the cut too. For the ZCTP, I just cut a piece of plywood about the size of the bandsaw table halfway through then clamp it in place. Quick and easy =D

Hi Zac, I’ve looked but I can’t see an address to contact you about products on your site, mind you my mind is medicine muddled at the moment in hospital. I like the look of your three quarter inch thick by inch thick holes. Only problem we have is you figuring out the postage to Mt Martha, Victoria, Australia, 3934. If it’s semi reasonable I may buy two lots, cheaper in larger amounts so can you please measure up to 3 lots thanks? Cheers, Sean

Hey thanks for noticing, and glad you had a chance to get back to the videos. A couple years ago, I just decided it was time to get active. I'm not sure exactly how much I lost, somewhere in the range of 40 or 50 pounds I think. Once I started seeing results, I knew that I better keep at it =D

Unfortunately, I don't ship internationally. I used to do it, but the price tag on the shipping plus the import taxes always resulted in the customer being unhappy in the end regardless of my product or service. Sorry about that, just decided it wasn't worth it anymore
