I Think the best areas are close to the Undergroundstations Stephansplatz ( Touristy and probably expensive but the absolute Center of the City) and Landstraße (Station not the whole District with the same Name) and Karlsplatz. This 2 Stations have at least 3 Underground/ SBahnlines and are in walking distance to Innere Stadt while they are also in resitential Districts with normal Shops and Restaurants for Locals. Karlsplatz is also in walking Distance to Naschmarkt. Schwedenplatz is also a good area, it is between the City and the Hip 2nd District, and it is one of Viennas Nightlife Spots… I would probably recommend Karlsplatz most.
