UPDATED VERSION HERE: • The Law & the Story of... -
What is the modern Christian’s relationship to the Old Testament law in the Bible? Which laws are we supposed to obey? Do the Ten Commandments still apply? Here's an overview of the story of God's people and their relationship to biblical law through history. It'll answer a lot of the questions you have (and maybe even some you didn't)!
Knowing the overarching story of God’s people and their relationship to the law helps us get our bearings as we dive into different passages during our Bible reading or Bible Study groups. It also helps us to identify questionable teachings, such as those coming out of the Hebrew Roots Movement (aka Torahism or return to Torah). And it sheds some light on the divergence between Judaism and Christianity in the early centuries.
If you’re a believer in God today, this is your story. This is our shared history! The faith journey that believers are living today is the continuation of this same story.

So glad I found your channel as I deal with 2 Hebrew roots guys at work (on a 4 man masonry crew). I've tried to reason with scripture but they usually resort to saying the scriptures are tainted and have been changed. I feel there is nowhere to go once someone claims the scriptures we have are not originally what was written. It has been a true headache. Thank you for producing this material brother. Much love! ✌🏼

Thanks, Jesse! As Augustine famously said, “If you believe what you like in the Gospel, and reject what you don't like, it is not the Gospel you believe, but yourself.” Those who take that position don't usually think about it this way, but they are putting themselves in a position of authority over the Scriptures. And, at that point, when it comes to theological disagreements between us, I have to choose Holy Scripture over my friend's opinions. Hope you find my videos helpful in your ongoing discussions! Blessings, Rob

Fortunately for you, they are right! (I am NOT) a member of the Hebrew Roots but a gentile believer in Yeshua HaMassiach. What we read and study nowadays is nothing but the crooked Greco-Roman catholic theology that for almost 2000 years the main stream church is been feeding us. Time to change diets! Please, read the Scriptures from the hebrew perspective, with the hebrew understanding and you will see the difference right away. Shalom 🕎

@@Pverb623 I used to work for a company where I worked alongside Orthodox Jews. One of them confessed to me that although there are over 600 Torah Laws, in reality, they only keep about half. I would think it's impossible to function in daily life while being mindful of 613 OT Laws at all times. If you break one, you break them all, according to Yahweh. And with no system for annual animal sacrifice to atone for sins, that's a no win situation. Book of Hebrews calls the Mosaic Law system the Ministry of Death & Condemnation. But the Good News is that Jesus Christ offers salvation TO SINNERS & SINNERS ONLY. Who REPENT & abide in Jesus Christ. Try reading Book of Hebrews & Galatians & Romans.

It's amazing to me that a man as learned as you appear to be, will be using Acts chapter 10 and saying that that vision negates us keeping Yah's dietary restrictions. Peter interprets his own vision after he goes to the centurion's home. He literally says that God has made man clean and what God has made clean he should not call common or unclean. It's not about pork it's about people.
@TheBiblicalRoots
@TheBiblicalRoots 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, Mr. Batman. Well, at least you find me amazing in one sense. :-) I hear what you're saying, but we need to remember that Scripture inextricably links unclean people and unclean food: “You shall therefore separate the clean beast from the unclean, and the unclean bird from the clean. You shall not make yourselves detestable by beast or by bird or by anything with which the ground crawls, which I have set apart for you to hold unclean. You shall be holy to me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine.” (Leviticus 20:25-26) God decreed a set of foods unclean for Israel (Lev 11), but Gentiles weren’t held to those laws (See Deut 14:21). So under the Mosaic Covenant, what you ate revealed who you were. This is why in Acts 10 God used a vision of food to indicate a change in the status of people. When the voice said of the food, “What God has made clean, do not call common” (Acts 10:15), Peter understood it signaled a change in the status of people as well. The holiness laws his ancestors had lived under for a millennium and a half- which categorized certain food and certain people unclean-had changed. If we take Peter’s vision solely as a metaphor for the Gentiles, we run into two significant problems. First, on what basis are we willingly allowing for a change in the Law of Moses on the issue of people, but not food? It's an arbitrary standard based on a pre-commitment to keeping the kosher food laws. Second, if the vision was solely given as a metaphor for the Gentiles, the command to “kill and eat” (v. 13) and the declaration “What God has made clean, do not call common” (v. 15) would be based on a falsehood. Yahweh would be teaching that formerly impure people are now clean by _falsely_ declaring formerly impure food clean. There is no precedent in scripture for God doing such a thing. Moreover, Yahweh does not teach false things or abide deceit. “It is impossible for God to lie” (Heb 6:18). Blessings, Rob

It amazes me how so many Christian's try to out Jew the Jews. I mean, they have a long history of failure to abide in the Mosaic Laws (613 Mitzvot Laws). Maybe alot of Christian's are not versed on the doctrine of Double Imputation? By Martin Luther? Is this why so many are still relying on their own works of self righteousness? I wonder?

Here goes I have read your reply in regards to the dietary requirements and it referencing the animal it self but I have heard elese where that if this were the case why would God in the beginning say when he made all things which included animals that he says they are all good? If the animal was unclean it wouldn't be good right ? Not sure if I've something which if I have my apologies.

Even though I am not subject to the law, I did this so I could bring to Christ those who are under the law. Paul wasn’t under the laws….as he says. This verse proves messianic Christianity, where Christians dress and act like Jews to infiltrate our synagogues and preach the gospel…..this illegal in Israel…..so why does Christianity like to break laws…..? Thanks for pointing out that the relationship to the law for the people of Israel was covenantal. This is imperative to understand in respect to the promise of the new covenant, where sanctification is defined as an internal work, clearly because of God's sending of The Messiah, who is our righteousness and holiness. This is why Paul defines our relationship to the law as being entirely re-defined by the freedom found uniquely in Christ (Galatians 3:22). Keep up the good work!

This is the usual Jesus nullified the law teaching. He came and fulfilled the law in order to nullify the law. Because God made a mistake with the first law so had to make another covenant that didn’t include all those annoying bits. The problem with the first covenant was that the people were stiff necked and hard-hearted so the new covenant He is writing it on our hearts so we will want to keep his law! It’s not a new law. Jewish people are not Israel. Israel are the twelve tribes of Jacob. Ten tribes were scattered amongst the nations not destroyed. Jesus came to restore the lost sheep (lost 10 tribes) that is who the gentile believers are. They are descendants of Jacob or they are adopted into Israel. They are certainly not Jews but likewise they are Gods people. The feasts are not Jewish feasts they’re God’s feasts to be kept for all generations, not “until I made another covenant”. Again the covenant was made with Israel not just the Jews so we should keep His calendar rather than man’s calendar. The fourth commandment is keep the sabbath not Constantine’s sun worship day. Peter’s vision was not about abandoning the dietary law! It was about not calling gentiles unclean. Peter didn’t start eating bacon 😂he went to the gentile household and gave them the gospel. Paul went to the temple and paid for the sacrifices so the men could complete their Nazarene vows. He was accused of teaching against the law of Moses which he denied multiple times. Peter warns that Paul is difficult to understand and is easily misinterpreted by those who teach lawlessness. Paul didn’t teach against circumcision. He taught it is not for salvation and you should not do it until you understand the law which new gentile believers did not do. Gentiles are not to become Jews but they’re to learn to follow the Torah out of loving obedience just as messiah Yeshua (Jesus) did. That’s what he was teaching. Hebrew roots people go too far and start keeping the oral law which Jesus riled against. He condemned the ritual hand washing and sabbath walking laws turning the ritual hand washing water into wine and commanding the lame man to pick up his bed and walk in breach of the oral tradition of man. Jesus taught to not add or subtract from the law of Moses. He commanded we do what the Pharisees teach isn the synagogue when seated on the seat of Moses (the Law) but not do as the Pharisees do (oral law) Your wife is doing correctly teach your children Torah. Sunday worship, Easter and Christmas are pagan holy days. Humble yourself,seek His face, pray and repent and He will hear you, He will be your God and you will be His son and He will heal your land (relationship with your family). I bless you and your family. May you experience the blessings of keeping His commandments as a family being set-apart from the world, in Yeshua’s name amen

Thank you. So many are confused about law keeping, Jesus' fulfillment of the law, love being fulfillment of the law for believers by faith, etc. When I read (over & over) Romans, Galatians & Hebrews I finally began to understand it. Sad, because I've listened to 1000s of hours of Christian radio (because I ditched my tv in 1980) & no one can explain what should be so simple - especially Hebrews, which I feel is the "magnifying glass" that harmonizes both Old & New Testaments.

I've believe and have studied both old and new testaments for decades. I tried attending a messianic assembly for a year. What I found strange bc all this was new to me, is that Jesus was rarely mentioned! BUT I KNEW MY BIBLE so this was a huge red flag. I studied there but found that they did not have anything that touched me. I left after Rabbi made it clear that he did not agree with Holy Spirit pored out to encourage the assembly. Bc I love scripture I began honoring shabbat. The first time, as I lit my candles, the kiss of Jesus fell upon my cheek. Of course, I was in love with Him and I felt a kiss. Upon my cheek. Sweet presence came into my room and had a more intimate fellowship than I can say. Bc I know the law of liberty in christ, I just enjoyed our appointment. The Hebrew language, Abraham man of faith thrilled me.

I noticed a major contradiction. You said that we can't throw out the Mosaic Law because it shows us what sin is but we don't have to observe the laws. If the mosaic law shows us what sin is then should we not practice it to avoid sin?

Hey, BT! The Law of Moses speaks to more than just what sin is. It also speaks to the ceremonial and national laws of ancient Israel. And the problem arises when we conflate the two. The ceremonial laws were given to Israel alone and have never been incumbent on Gentiles. It's not a sin for Gentiles to eat pork or work on Saturday, for example. The laws of right and wrong, on the other hand, apply to everyone. We know this because (a.) those moral laws existed long before Sinai, and (b.) God never judges other nations for not keeping Shabbat, or eating kosher, or observing the feasts. Israel alone is judged for that. Yet, (c.) other nations _are_ judged for moral evil. Blessings, Rob

the question becomes, if the only two commands are to love God and people. how do we do that? it seems like now that every other command is gone, we are left to our own interpretation of what love is. example: it used to be Gods command that his people were not to worship him the way pagans did by making up their own feasts to him (golden calf) but now can we love God and celebrate man made feasts to God. (chrismas) It seems with only just two commands that we are leaving a lot out and a lot would be left up to people's own interpretation of what they believe love is. And what exactly would be the definition of sin now?

This is the working of the Holy Spirit. He’s there to convict the world of sin, the believer of his righteousness. If you understand your identity in Christ you are much less focused on sin and more-so focused on Christ living through you. If all a person focuses on is sin managment I think it is worth asking, have they died?

Before the entrance of sin into the world and before the distinction between Jew and Gentile existed, God set apart one particular day in seven, the sabbath. It is interesting that this act is recalled in the announcement of the fourth commandment in Exodus 20. Doesn’t this lead to the suggestion that all ten commandments have a validity for all humanity from creation onward and any notion of a change of that commandment is contrary to scripture?

This question of what laws do I keep and what are no longer necessary bothered me for years, until I felt God leading me to dig deeper for myself. At a very basic level, what is sin - 1Jn3:4 - Sin is transgression of the Law. Jesus came to die a horrible death to free us from the penalty of our sin, our least response if we say we love Him would be to stop sinning, i.e simply keep the Law. Paul himself says - I would not have known sin if it were not for the Law. So I do agree there is some division in the Law and I will get to that in the next paragraph, but there is Law that defines sin, and law that defines what righteous living is, there is law that defines iniquity and law that defines holiness. All these laws either align us with God's intrinsic nature or get us to go against God's intrinsic nature, and since God does not change, we can rest assured the definition of sin, holiness , iniquity and righteousness do not change either. This should make us VERY cautious about dismissing any Law without an EXPLICIT NT statement undoing what was EXPLICITY recorded by Moses. By making the Law something that is ONLY attached to the Sinai covenant , this is very dangerous teaching that leads one by the nose through a selection of verses that seems to confirm this notion that so much of the Laws recorded by Moses are no longer in effect. Anti Law teachers like to use verses from Paul's letters to "prove" that the Law is not for new covenant believers. In all honestly - I myself could put together a collection of verses from Paul's writings to prove the Law is no longer necessary and it would be very convincing for new believers. But in the very same breath I can also gather a collection of verses from Paul's writings to prove that we should still be very Law observant - so what is the reality then? If you chose to believe that the Law is done away with by favoring those verses of Paul, then you will have a problem with Paul's other writings, the writings of the apostles, the first 2 thirds of scripture as well as the very severe warnings of Jesus - "get away from me - I never knew you , you workers of Lawlessness" Note Jesus does not tell the Law keepers to get away, keeping the Law is in line with the Father's will as Jesus says - not all who call me Lord Lord.... Who calls Jesus Lord - is it not the Christian community ? but only those who DO the will of the Father, i.e keep his Law? (Mat 7) Now let's be clear, no amount of law keeping will justify you. We cannot be justified by Law, only by faith lest anyone should boast so we can then come into good works defined before hand by our Father - clear? (that we should walk in them... a phrase often used in the OT to get people to follow the Law) So now for the next part, there were laws that defined sin and holiness etc, then there were laws that were the remedy for sin, or laws to deal with transgressions -- even though this remedy was not perfect, it served as an atonement for sin - a covering, not a redemption from it. Also a long list of punishments and curses were pronounced. It is really necessary to carefully examine what transpired at Mt Sinai, otherwise we just lump all 3 covenants as one and the same and this leads to misunderstanding. The first covenant offered at Mt Sinai, was a marriage to a free woman, an offer and then an acceptance by the MIXED MULTITUDE i.e not only Israelites. There was no mention of an Earthly high priest, tabernacle or Levitical system and a complex set of atonements and sacrifices. To keep this short - problem number 1 - the people feared and did not want to hear God's voice, and basically requested a mediator between them and God. The covenant progression continues, the book is sprinkled with blood and the covenant is now sealed - i.e it cannot be added to. Then God calls Moses up the mountain again to give him the testimony and a law? How can you add law now to the covenant once it has already been blood ratified, this was God making an allowance for their fear and stony hearts - so God gives the law pertaining to the Tabernacle and the Earthly high priest - so now His presence will not be out in the open due to their fear, and instead of a kingdom of priests, we have an additional layer of mediation with the Earthly high priest. But it gets worse... they break the covenant in less than 40 days, resulting in them incurring the death penalty - which they cannot hope to pay because we all already will die at least once. Death reigned from Adam to Moses (Rom). Moses intercedes and manages to negotiate with God, but the next 2 covenants that happen have a complex system of sacrifices included, a Levitical system, Tabernacle Earthly high priest. From the book of Hebrews it is quite clear that this was God's permissive will and was no longer necessary as Jesus replaces all those elements with better arrangements. Jesus also frees us from the curse of the Law not the Law itself. This slaughtering of animals and people bringing offerings became something which obviously made devout people of God feel quite confident in. Now imagine the massive mind shift if you place yourself in the shoes of a first century Jew that regularly brought your sacrifices and offerings, now to let that go and have faith in what Jesus accomplished, it must have been quite a challenge, it is a lot easier for me today to trust in what Jesus did, as I know no other way of re-conciliation. In Gal 3, Paul speaks of Law added because of transgressions, then he goes on to say these were a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, now that Christ is come we no longer need the school master. What was added ? Do you see now Paul is not referring to the whole Law, but those elements that were added because of transgressions. Paul I believe sometimes refers to this as the Law of Moses, the Law of Moses cannot be the entire first 5 books, because Law existed since Adam's time. I know this statement can get a lot of flak, because the first 5 books are referred to as Torah or instructions and were all written by Moses, so many believe the "Law of Moses is the entire first 5 books". The massive slaughtering and blood letting is most likely what Paul associates with the ministry of death. In addition the letter of the Law without the Spirit results in death, - the letter killeth but the Spirit gives life. Trying to follow the Law without God's nature placed on the inside of us - well that is not going to get us very far. Now what does God say about the new covenant and Law ? There are a few verses we can draw on, but God clearly tells us He will write His laws on our inward parts - for what reason? so that we can ignore them? no He states He will cause us to walk in them - this is the reason primarily stated for the New covenant. Eze 11, Eze 36. Now fortunately He does not say He will write His commandments on our inward parts because that would give people the opportunity to say oh it's only the ten commandments, well actually it's only 9 because that one commandment that starts with "Remember" that is the one we can safely forget, and if you are Catholic you only have to obey 8 commandments..... (I am being sarcastic here). Let us look at this verse often quoted "Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Note 1) The covenant is not with Gentiles or other peoples (oops! if you say the Law was only given to Israel then how do you embrace the covenant because that was only to Israel as well) Note 2) God references the FIRST covenant at Mt Sinai - the one which they broke as a reference. Now we know the first covenant did NOT include the Levitical system, Earthly High priest, a building where the presence of God will be hidden, but that first covenant did include reference to the feasts as example. Long before the covenant though we see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob being chosen because ...... Gen 26:3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; Gen 26:4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Gen 26:5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. So God did not have to be explicit to Abraham when he made a promise and covenant to Him , because Abraham already kept statutes laws commandments etc. So to make the Law all about the Mosaic covenant is simply downright mis-leading. Difficulty with Paul's writings? they can be explained, but only by someone who understands the covenants and prophets and Law the way Paul understood them. there are some really good explanations for those difficult verses of that "SEEM" to contradict the rest of scripture - don't be mislead.

Very good presentation! I think there are aspects of your understanding that I had embraced, but not quite processed, so this actually makes me understand myself better. As I have explained to many, it is not about "obeying all the Law," as much as it is "not walking as the world walks." The world observes Sunday, Christmas and Easter. They are the "pollutions of idols" from which Acts 15 tells us we should abstain. If I observe them, I am an unfaithful bride. The Torah protects me from those pollutions. It defines which god I am serving, regardless of what name I may use. Romans 6:15-16 Most Sabbaths find me "resting" from my work, sometimes attending a fellowship, but often simply staying home. If I want to attend a party, a show, the Fair, a football game, or anything else on an occasional Sabbath, I have been given the grace to do that. But, it is the exception, not the rule. I am genuinely excited to observe the Sabbath. Chill out, eat some snacks, read the Word and turn off all the noise. I NEED it! As sundown approaches on Friday, I get giddy at the notion that I can spend time with YHVH and be justified in not responding to the calls, or the emails, or even the knocks on the door. Of course, 1 John 5:3 says, "loving Elohim is keeping his Commandments." So, if I love him, I obey him. If I don't love him, I walk as the world walks. There is a blessing for obedience, and a curse for disobedience. Jesus has redeemed me from the curse. So, I can get blessed without the risk of a curse. If I ever thought I had too much blessing, I could turn that off by disobeying. But, that doesn't seem like a smart move. I will take issue with a couple of matters. Peter's interpretation of his dream was he should call no MAN unclean, not that unclean animals were now kosher. The condemnation from the Pharisees in Mark 7 is about unwashed hands, not unclean meats. Jesus said whatever you put in your mouth goes out of you into the draught, and is cleaned. The word there is more akin to "purged," saying any dirt you have eaten will work its way out. If going to the bathroom made unclean animals clean, then the entire premise of the Law concerning kosher is moot. Hebrews 8:13 does not have the word "covenant." Nor does it appear in verse 7. The italicized words in the original KJV are those that were added by the translators. It is the Levitical Priesthood who was faulty, needing to be replaced and growing old. YHVH did not make a faulty covenant. He renewed that covenant. He made it better by removing the curse. But, that first covenant was everlasting. It is the heart of Man that is faulty. The 1 Corinthians 10 instructions need to be considered starting in verse 18. The instructions are "don't ask if the food set before you at a feast was sacrificed to an idol." He goes on to say that if they offer that information without being asked, you should not eat it. So, again, it is not a matter of kosher. Liked and subscribed. If I could do both twice, I would. Shalom.

@@cbonhomme1 You are exactly right for obvious reasons which could be explained by the law itself. But what if I told you by writing it / the commandments on your heart is the only way for the mysteries of the kingdom to be revealed. 1John 3:4 defines sin therefore we have to agree it’s correct knowing the word of god can not be rebuffed the verses has to make sense.
