The thought of a chain-lock shifting around and wiggling makes me smile. someone should make a heavy duty chain lock that actually moves like a snake when loud sounds like a grinder in close to it.
@BeastyBite
@BeastyBite Жыл бұрын
Tip from a lockpicker: Don't use chains with numberlocks. Those are the easiest non-destructive breaches with just a bottle opener and will take an experienced picker 3 mins. get a lock with deep key cut outs. most locks with cheap keys are breachable with a simple rake attack. 3 - 10 minutes. if you use a heavy chain we still can attack the lock the chain is on. so the heaviness of the lock is as important as the heaviness of the chain.

I was looking for exactly a video like this, huge thumbs up! I think I would claim that when parking in crowded areas a U-lock would actually be easier to use than a chain or wire lock, at least in certain situations. I have to park my bike outside a shopping mall every week and there's about 40 bike spots and about... 50 bikes to share the space. Every single time. This means everyone has to squeeze their bike in between the others and locking is a pain in the a**. I use a wire lock at the moment and it's a terrible experience every time to reach down to the front wheel and stretch out the wire between all the other bikes and stuff... and FINALLY after about 30 secs I manage to lock it. I feel like a U-lock would save me a lot of time since it at least maintains the shape so I won't break my back just to stretch the wire.

@metamorphicorder
@metamorphicorder 7 жыл бұрын
Bradley Suarez nothing by bell. cheap easily defeated. though i havent used or attacked one (for testing, not stealing), bell makes a ulock with a dimple lock mech, and at that price point, its almost certain to be easily raked (a type of picking done with easily obtained tools) open, or just cut with 12 or 24 in bolt cutters. if you are going to use a u lock, go with the bully lock, its easily as tough or tougher than the bell, the lock mech is tons harder to defeat (disc detainer) and the real money is in the fact that it has a tamper sensor and alarm that transmits to a chirping key fob pager that has a 2000' range. the cool thing is that for about $100 you have a ulock you can use with the alarm on or off. by itself its great. but say you dont have a way to use a u lock directly in a specific location, you can devise a way to attach it to the bike and just use the lock body as a motion alarm while you have the bike locked with the chain. or you can just lock it to the bike with the shackle as a tamper alarm. you can use chain to lock the bike to something, chain to lock the wheels to the bike and thread all the chains through the u lock to sense if they are being attacked. its prettt versitile.

Thank you. I roll my eyes when someone says u locks are more secure. with an angle grinder I can brace the u lock with one hand and the rest on my leg and cut with the other. with a hardened steel chain it's is much harder to cut especially when it's off the ground. the most popular high security lock in NYC is the 10mm or up hardened steel chain with an American Brand padlock or the like for a reason.

vry informative. another factor in choosing u-lock proportions: the more space inside the "u" the easier it is to break with a hydraulic jack. smaller locks are finicky, but more convenient if you don't lock your wheels every time.

I have a basket on my bike, and it baffles me how people worry about the weight of a lock, I just put it on the basket. Call me crazy, but I am not going to save on weight or price to protect a 1k bike. The heaviest hardest to break lock is what I'll always try to use (or two), since getting out the office and finding by 1k bike gone because I wanted to save 50 bucks or not carry weight does not make much sense to me.

Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit mini, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can TEXT you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything can happen, time is the most critical factor.

Funny, how those locks are popular (outside Germany or Switzerland). Cable locks are not recommended at all (too unsecure)! Instead there are folding locks that are quite popular here (Switzerland and Germany). They can be mounted on a bike very easily, are almost as heavy as chain locks. IMHO U-locks are the most secure locks available now (see HipLok D1000) even against angle grinder attacks. 😍

I own that kryptonite chain lock with the weight 10.80lbs. That was not fun to carry around! It was also a hassle to lock the bike because I'd have to keep removing my back pack to take out my lock and chain the bike up. Probably Took about 40-seconds 1 minute every time. It became annoying having to remove my bag every time to take and store that heavy chain. I also couldn't find anywhere to place it on bike without getting in the way. I switched to a kryptonite u lock standard 16mm steel. It weighs 4lb. If you combine it with a lock holster like "fabric horse" it's super convenient for quick stops. I make a lot of quick stops and it's easy to remove the lock from my holster and put it back in again. Takes about 7 seconds.

The way you're carrying your u-locks is a bit of a snagging hazard in tight traffic. Catch it on something and you'd be hoiked off in most painful fashion. My daily lock is just a Krypto Messenger series mini u-lock that fits nicely in the back pocket of shorts or jeans , so is tucked in nicely out of the way -yet there in an instant should I need it for whatever purpose. Of course- I'm not locking anywhere for hours - for that there's no substitute for a dirty great chain with a high security padlock- with the u-lock as an extra measure so both wheels are secured.

I know this was not the question but I'd like to add that riding in the Winter is similar. It is all about having the right clothing and accessories (mittens or heavy gloves, winter hat under your helmet, earmuffs if the hat's not enough, thick socks, substantial shoes that don't breathe, warm pants or two layers like long underwear, a medium thickness Winter coat). The first mile is cold but after that your blood starts flowing and I unzip my coat most of the way to avoid getting too hot. It blew my mind that that is the case but that's what I have experienced. Two years ago I said Winter bikers were too hardcore and I would never do that. Give it a try, it's much better than you may expect.

I was riding last winter when there wasn't snow and ice ( can't ride in those conditions on a road bike). I had just about no bike clothes. I had a pair of bike shorts, pair of longer bike pants and long normal underwear. On top I had windproof bike jacket, t-shirt, longsleeved shirt. On my head I had this ixquick-proxy.com/do/spg/show_picture.pl?l=english&rais=1&oiu=http%3A%2F%2Fst.depositphotos.com%2F1004098%2F2594%2Fi%2F950%2Fdepositphotos_25942869-Arab-muslim-man-with-turban.jpg&sp=9714e2a476a73bb0b65c24928b040e3e Of course not as neatly tied. Kept my ears and head warm. I used two pairs of gloves. One thinner pair and fatter pair on top of those. And yes, I also had to unzip my jacket from time to time. Feet and hands were freezing from time to time tho.

Ulocks are safer because they are thicker. Chain locks can be cut with angle grinder by putting them under tension first. Chains are highly inefficient when it comes to weight per thickness ratio, as each link needs to loop around each other. There's just not avoiding having a bunch of useless weight in them.

The weight of a U-lock really isn't a problem imo. Any backpack with MOLLE or similar systems will easily be able to fit easily fit the lock very snugly, and you won't even notice the extra weight unless you're very sensitive.

Do nut locks work on fixed gear bikes? With those on your wheels and seat, you would only need to lock the frame, so no need for a second lock.

When my brother is riding his bike, he has the chain lock wrapped around the tube holding his seat.

LiteLock’s D-locks, model X3 & model X1, are anti angle grinder. These locks will chew up those angel grinder disks. It will take them much longer times and have to go through multiple disks to cut through these locks. High quality ABUS D-locks normally comes with a mount to your bike. My ABUS GRANIT X-PLUS 540 lock comes with a mount to your bike.

Careful about the "If they really want it, they'll get it" line. Naive cyclists hear that & decide to use the worst lock that most thieves target exclusively using boltcutters, the useless cable lock that gets cut in 1s.

I am the opposite if they are stupid enough to only use cable locks then they deserve to have their bikes stolen.

The easiest and most compfrtable way to transport a u-lock is in your belt, not the belt loop. The latter will destroy the loop over time and the u-lock while swing around during riding, which is really annoying. There are also small holsters you can put on your belt to carry an u-lock to make it even more comfortable. Lock up the Restap Lock Holster, it's only a few bucks.
