20 year Air Force retiree here. Never got shot at, never slept in the dirt and never ate a single MRE. Got my own dorm room to my self without a roommate. I deployed to Italy 3 times, stayed in a 5 star hotel, got $80 a day in per diem and a free rental car. Air Force gets by far the most money from the government so Air Force folks have the best facilities and are treated the best. The chow halls are amazingly good compared to other branches, almost as good as a restaurant.

@@homiesenatep a lot of Sailors are stuck on the ships to live there 24/7 in home port. When that happens that can turn a livable ship into a construction zone nightmare. People pass out from little to no ventilation in areas of the ship. No water for showering or drinking, dirty bathrooms, fire zones and stuff like that. I’ve lived in it 2X and I was either living in my car to get away from it, getting a hotel or crashing with a buddy. I had a barracks at one point but it was condemned shortly after due to asbestos, and low inhabitable standards. Air Force takes top honors for living conditions. On a deployment with two Air Force guys, 82 Marines and Sailors stayed in lare double wall tents in Tamp during the summer. The AC units they used were so good you had to use an extended cold weather sleeping system to survive the cold. The Marines and Sailors were pretty happy with that. The two Air Force guys had one of those tents to themselves, and were given hardship duty pay for that. Had those been GP tents I would not have been surprised, but we got great tents to stay in during the job project.

If you are on a flight crew you will get plenty of travel. AF definitely lives better than the others. I was an Army helicopter pilot. 3 years active and 26 Reserve and National Guard. Our “travel” was 2 weeks annual training in a hot, humid, Army post named after a Confederate General😂. My friend was a Load Master on an AF C-130 and flew to Italy, Spain and other places that people actually WANT to go. Army pilots are lucky to catch a ride in the back of a 2 1/2 ton truck from the flight line. The Air Force has crew busses. The AF treats their aviators like royalty. The Army, not so much.

I joined the AF in 1963, probably many decades before you were born. Interestingly, I would agree with the majority of your assessment on the various services. I spent 20 years in the AF working in signal intelligence. Many of my assignments were at locations that did not even have airfields. I traveled extensively, and ended up in locations most people never heard of. I also did several assignments with Army, Navy and on occasion Marines on their bases/facilities that did the same type of intelligence work. I thank my lucky stars that I chose the AF. While in the AF, I obtained an Associate of Science degree from the Community College of the AF (a great opportunity and benefit). After 20 years in the AF and retiring 37 years ago I went to get a BSEE and an MBA using my GI benefits. What I've learned in my life is that there will be buttholes in the military and civilian life as well. Ignore them and press on. If they are you superior in the military, just do what you have to do to stay out of trouble. Eventually either you or the other person will move on and the problem is gone. In the civilian world, there are usually opportunities elsewhere. My take on the military branches goes like this; the Army and Navy are administered as you would expect most traditional military organizations to be, the Marine Corps is more like a cult, and the AF is run more like a corporation. I'm not sure what to make of the Coasties. Never had much contact with them. I do know that in times of war they become part of the Navy. In fact maybe they are now and no longer part of the Treasury Department?

I think a lot of people join the army simply because they don't know enough about the other branches (and there still isn't a whole lot of crowdsourced clear detail put in perspective about them) and that the army is the easiest and fastest to join due to it having the lowest enlistment standards (a lot of people wanted to join in a hurry and couldn't qualify for the other branches anyway)

Why i want to join the military: for most of my life i feel like i haven't made a difference, that i haven't amounted to anything and believe that i couldn't become someone. I felt like my life has no purpose and there was nothing i could do, but the idea of the military changed that for me, it made me feel like i could help my country, help me mentally, and make something out of my life instead of a nobody playing video games in there late 30's. I want to help people, i have experienced a lot of losses in my life, my mother at age 13, my grandpa at age 11, my grandmother at age 17, i was powerless to help them while they were suffering from cancer and other illnesses, my devotion to help people and make a difference is why i choice to join the army

Sam Sitar what do you mean by a “Higher quality of life”? I told my Army recruiter that I wanted to join the Air Force because I wanted a “higher quality of life” and he look at me silly and took me to an Army base. He shown me all around the base. It has homes, movie theaters, stores, and etc. He told me that the Air Force base look similar. So what’s so life threatening about the other branches? All the training is the same. when you get your Job you can be located on any Military Branch base, so can you elaborate with the “Higher quality of life” statement. I’m not trying to come off as rude. I’m just asking.

I'll say for one thing, in my opinion, the Army hands down have the best shooters. There is a lot about Marine Scout Snipers and such, but when you look at International Sniper competitions and inter-service competitions Army always seems to take it. I believe the 75th Rangers took the last 2 years in a row regarding international sniper competition.

A pretty good video overall. My background was as a Marine Infantry GySgt. Now retired. My list included earning dress blues, my DI cover, and seeing combat and did all three. A couple of observations though; First, no one goes right into any of the branch's special ops (and yes each has them, to some degree) you go in to a field, then are screened and if you make it past screening, you go to school. I'd say most of the ops schools have around an 80 to 85% FAIL rate. Second, a lot of recruiters don't tell you, but they guarantee you the school not the job. It's up to you to pass it. If you fail your school, you're not out of your contract, but you may end up learning how to cook for four years. Now in the Navy and Marines (not sure about Army or Air Force) the Marines have what is called B billets, and I think the Navy calls it Neutral and Shore Duty. My two B billets were the Navy Base Rota, Spain, and four years at the Navy Air Station in Bermuda (now closed) While doing those various duties I was able to get a lot of education in as both bases had University of Maryland and City College of Chicago. Overall, my recommendations to youngsters I talk to are 1) Navy, see the world, get a solid job skill, never see front line combat (except for special ops, or those MOST AWESOME Navy Corpsmen assigned to the USMC) 2) Air Force, great everything but limited travel for most, kind of like being a civilian in a lot of ways 3. Marines, I spent over 16 out of 21 years overseas so did some traveling. 4. Army. Similar in many ways to Marines job wise but limited overseas bases to get stationed. As a whole, I would not recommend the Marines unless I personally know you, because even though the retention rate has gotten better I still hate to see youngsters fail. Hope this helps some.

Your assessment reminds me yrs ago when I was still in the Army and decided to change over to the Coast Guard. Sitting in MEPS listening to these kids oorahing and hooahing and talking about how badass they were going to be for their chosen branch. There I was sitting there with my “Hi I’m joining the Coast Guard” sticker badge, the only one that day as it were. Well these kids eventually saw my sticker and unsurprisingly started to berate this choice of branch as I’m sure most could imagine. At the time I was 6 months out from ETS from the Army and assigned in Spec Ops. I was former Infantry with so many identifiers I lost count. Anyways, I said nothing, just reached into my wallet and presented them with my ID card that showed I was a NCO in the Army. After they realized I then asked them “ Now what should that tell you?” They sat down and stayed quiet the rest of time in that room.

Clarification for the Coast Guard regarding the travel opportunity section. There are opportunities to volunteer for Middle Eastern billets and the potential for European billets; however, the chances of getting a European billet are low and if you're joining the CG, you most likely won't be seeking a Middle Eastern billet. All the other branches most definitely still have more traveling opportunities.

I like the new style. Maybe switch it up based on how factual vs how opinion based the content is? The only thing with this video I disagree with is the civilian equivalent jobs for the Navy being so low. Much of the Navy is either mechanical or electronic or both. Those skills are transferable to a ton of civilian sector jobs. Especially nukes.
