thinking a 1dx mark 1 maybe but probably 2 - simply because its still a beast, more than half the price of the new crop of ff speed monsters. I have a lot of EF glass also. the R6 might be the vanity purchase. ( but its all vanity for an amateur )

I just purchased a second hand 1dx mkii the other day from wex. Came from a 5d3 and 1d4. Times to retire the 1d4. Got an amazing deal. 130,000 clicks on the shutter £780. Turns out sadly on their part the battery is knackered and their going to replace it with a brand new LP-19. Win win for me. Love how much better the 1dx mkii is than my older 1d4. Low light is a whole new level. Really wanted an r6 but couldn't justify the cost just now. Love the videos.

I swapped my Canon 7D MK 2 for a Canon 1 DX this week. My interest is match pictures for my local rugby club. Yesterday (Saturday) was a sunny day the first this year, but even allowing for that the improved results with the 1DX on a Canon 400 F4 DO was very noticeable in terms of speed and accuracy of focusing. Even with cropped photos the result looked better. Downsides 1DX is heavier, noisier and needs more space in the bag. Plug for WEX I traded my &D MK 2 and a Canon 300mm F4 L in PX. They offered over £100 more than another large well known dealer, they sent 4 cameras from Norwich to Birmingham for me to look at including a 1DX with shutter count of less than 8000. And the added bonus was having checked my kit they upped their offer by around £20!!. Other camera R6 with EF Canon 70-200mm F2 + 1.4x with RF adapted.

@@mdbedelsohn4307 OK I have been using the 1DX ( mk1) with a Canon 300mm L F2.8 IS II plus 2x converter alongside a Canon R6 with canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS ii plus 1.4x converter to photograph rugby. With these combinations I have found the colour rendition of the 1DX excellent and the sharpness is also very good indeed. The 1DX combination is heavy so I use a monopod plus low seat. The R6 is much lighter to use but I have found I need to make some exposure correction either in camera or in post using DPP to match the 1DX jpgs. Keepers from 1DX are higher than from R6 because of a failing on my part as I find I accidentally move the focus point by nudging the controller. I feel that the 1DX mk2 or mk3 which are reputed to be steps up from my version would allow me to take good enough pictures for my purposes they are built like tanks. If I had to elect for one or the other body I would probably elect for the R6 if I was going to be walking around with it however if I was going to be stationary then I would be quite happy to keep the 1DX which ever Mk it was. If you can find my Facebook page facebook.com/john.griffin.562329/ you can look at a couple of albums I have posted recently. Both cameras are represented and many have been quite heavily cropped. Please realise I am just taking pictures for fun and for friends. Not sure if that helps at all.

In my case, the 6DMKII is up for sale ( the R6 minus the grip covers all what the 6D MKII does ). The 1D MKIV is the back up now and the 1Dx MKII + R6 & grip are the main bodies for sports. I would be happy to replace the 1Dx MKII for another R6 but I'll keep the 1Dx MKII as it still serves a purpose ( rugged body, weather sealed, build to last etc). Using the R6 and 1Dx MKII side by side for a few months I tend to use the R6+400DO as the AF is superb. Much better than the 1Dx MKII. With Face + EYE tracking on the R6 doesn't miss a shot. Huge plus for the R6 is that the AF points cover all the viewfinder. My keeper rate has gone up a lot. The 1Dx MKII + 70-200 are for photos in the box and celebrations. The 1D MKIV +24-105 for the very close photos of celebrations. I'll stay with this set up for a while as the R3/R1 are out of my budget ( I spent the money on a 400/4 DO MKII recently and sold the 400/2.8 L IS MKI, which by the way is not supported on the R6 for the 12fps). Rob, consider the 400/4 DO MKII! I shoot at 6400 ISO with the R6 and the noise is minimal. Very light combo ( handhold ) and the IQ of this lens is excellent. It's probably the most underrated lens in sports photography! It is also supported for 12 H+ on the R6

What about the R5? You get full frame and a crop when you need it. I would think capturing more of the scene and having the ability to crop afterwards would help greatly in following the action at various distances on a fixed focal length lens. You also wouldn’t need to keep switching cameras as much. You could also use a metabones speed booster to get and extra stop of light shooting in crop mode producing 17 megapixel images. Have you also thought about the Canon 200-400 f4 to cover most everything? Thanks 😊

@robertlawrence7958

Totally agree that buying the 1d series dslr's would be a backward move and I can understand your reasoning in regard to the 'R7'. Although earlier EF lenses do work well with the R6 you do not get the full high speed frame rate with the two lenses you mentioned. For a sports shooter, high frame rate is a big bonus and therefore upgrading a mk1 400 to a mk2 300 would be a great benefit. With the 1.6 crop factor you wouldn't be losing out on the focal length either. For me, having two identical bodies is the way to go and if I was in your shoes I think that, IF an R7 is released and IF it is suitable for your purpose and IF the price is right (a lot of ifs!) then I would buy two of them along with an EF0 300 f2. 8 mkii, plus an EF 70-200 mkii or mkiii (all of which will give you the full high speed frame rate) and then sell your R6, 7D, 400 mki and 70-200 mki to help fund it. Just my thoughts 😊 Buying a 2nd R6 would be a possibility but then you would need to choose between having the slower frame rate with the 400 mki or the faster frame rate with a newer 300 mkii but then losing apparent focal length. Of course, there is no R7 as yet...... I am currently using an R6 for mainly wildlife and some sport and I'm really enjoying it. Having spent many years working up to full frame bodies I am very reluctant to return to a crop sensor and so I'm saving for a second R6 body. It's always a bummer for us mere working mortals when money is such a deciding factor in our decision making process. Whatever you eventually choose to do Rob I wish you every success.

I think you have a good lineup and strategy to wait for the R7 and to acquire the RF70-200 and BG-R10. I would definitely consider a 2nd R6 now, and skip the 1dxii and 1dxiii. The R6 is basically the mirrorless version of the 1dxiii at less than half the price, and it doesn’t appear you need the 6k RAW or slightly faster mechanical shutter of the 1dx. For the R3, I wouldn’t be too hasty in acquiring one - I’m thinking Canon may cut price to respond to the Z9, and it honestly doesn’t give me $3500 USD worth of improved shots over the R6, which is already excellent. That said, I have enjoyed the ergonomics, frame rate and sensor output of my R3 and will be keeping it for a while!

I found it overkill for my purpose and underestimated the weight, but wanted to go old school as I still love my 6D. I found no improvement in IQ over that camera and the 6D is so much easier to use (I don't care about weather sealing). I found the menu system very cumbersome but with some great features, and dual pixel autofocus was nice to try. Funny thing is, the CR2 files would not work in my Lightroom 6.8. This was one of the reasons I went old school because CR3 files don't work either without converting to DNG. Oh well. The thing I really didn't like though, was the noise. It's so loud! Hey Rob, smart to first get the RF70-200 and hang on to see what the R7 will actually be. We all dream it to be exactly like an R6, just with a crop sensor. Likely the price would also approach the R6 .. Then the big question will be its dynamic range and low light capabilities of course. Because my 70D nearly drowned in Norway Rain last summer, I gave up waiting end of September and got the R6 plus the TC1.4x. Because I'm into wildlife and not sports, I still crave for more reach with my 100-400Lii, but I doubt the R7 can give better IQ compared to the R6 with this TC. For my hobby, I cannot afford 2 bodies, so I'm no longer sure I should trade in my R6 for the R7 when it finally arrives ..

If the R7 has the same pixel density as the Canon M6 Mark II which I own, it will be more demanding of lenses and more sensitive to camera shake like the Canon 5Dsr which I own. But the results on a super sharp lens like the Canon 300mm F2.8 and 600mm F4 are absolutely stunning!! 😉 Just be aware you may need to use slightly more shutter speeds than normal. Although if it has IBIS that may elevate that issue. I also found I the sensor doesn’t do well in low light such as twilight for some reason. Just some thoughts. But hopefully the sensor will be back illuminated to help with that. 😊

I have the 6D. But if I had a 1Dx I'd keep a wide zoom on the 6D and call it good, using the 1Dx for any of the telephoto shots.

I bought r6 but I can't stand colours from it, the one from my old 6d is so much better, that's why I'm thinking to buy 1dx or 1dx m2 instead of r6, don't you have any examples of 1dx comparing to 6d in terms of colour?

R7 for me if it ever comes out and if it is compatible at the highest FPS with my 300IS. The R6 sadly is not.

I doubt any RF mount with ever match max fps but they're still plenty fast

Once you make the switch to the R7, I’m interested in the 400… 😉

R5 is fantastic 100% but I'm not sure it where it fits inbetween the R6 and R3 for me personally
