In order to properly separate the frequencies of sound being sent to each speaker in an aftermarket car audio system we need to use a crossover. But the question becomes, should we use an active crossover that limits signal before the amplifier output, or should we use a passive crossover that is wired between the amplifier and the speakers/subwoofers? Let's discuss which is better, passive or active crossovers!

I say if anything, run what you are building your setup for. If you plan active with staging, then multiple channels and some form of DSP will be involved. Some may not be comfortable with it, but if you have knowledge of how passive crossovers are designed, you can send an active signal to each individual speaker input on the passive crossover board. Just know, it voids warranty, and may damage its functionality if done incorrectly. I prefer to do both together as a precaution, and for the ease of level matching. I’m comfortable altering the crossover for full active install. Gives the passive crossover the added features of alignment and EQ adjustment for all speakers.

I haven't watch the the video yet, but the answer is simple and straightforward. Using DSP active crossovers is objectively better every time.

My question is how can you use an active crossover (D6.1200) to make a custom passive crossover? I have been trying to build a multi-channel system with equipment I already own and I keep running into limitations with how many channels I have to work with. I have been looking into integrating coaxial drivers to keep time alignment correct, while using a passive crossover. Or would you recommend using a wideband driver instead?
@gonzoe123
@gonzoe123 Жыл бұрын
@@Pete.across.the.street I am looking at the 5” coaxial from SB Acoustics for a dash build. I am concerned that it may not have the midbass output I desire. It would start with an active setup off of four channels from my D6.1200. If the midbass is not to my liking, I have some 7”-8” midbasses I can integrate, but then I would need a passive crossover for the coaxial. Channels 5 & 6 will be bridged to an 8” front sub. The preamp outputs will be feeding an LC1.800 and dual 15” subs, mounted to a trunk baffle. Front sub and dash midbass are new to me, so I am trying to future proof my build/thought process.

I work at my son's car audio store. I have a Dodge Challenger with the KH system. hate it. So I changed all my speakers but kept the two KH 12" Subs, installed a DSR1 and two amps, a 4 ch Focal amp and a db 5 ch amp. The DSR1 has only 6 channel out puts. my OEM DSP was a 13 ch. my question is.... because I'm using some 4 ohm speaker and some 2.5 ohm speakers. can I run my 2.5 ohm speakers on my 5 ch db amp and my KH sub on the same amps 5 channel that are wired to 3 ohms?

Active is almost always better but requires more amplifier channels. Many people want to use head unit power or want at most a 4ch amp plus sub amp. Active crossover users will almost always be people who spend mega bucks on their systems. Most people want boom and that’s it. It’s the enthusiast who HAS the $ and is willing to spend it that will choose active vs passive, the plebs will stick to stock or coaxial 99% of the time.

So that makes sense. My question would be how much difference is capable of hearing; homemade passive vs off-the-shelf passive vs dsp? I can tell my soundqubed amp has some issues in tuning as well as the stock speakers need help in tuning as well. I've been lucky in the past, however I think with my 96 Camry, the speakers are just not up to the challenge. I also look back and see why my Infiniti speakers failed in just over a year's time or so. Never had them before but had wanted to try something more expensive. I don't expect in-depth replies, some feedback and a direction to go helps more than that. I enjoy researching and finding info. I do see better results in finding information that is detailed and moreso of why something is, instead of generic answers. Maybe I'm crazy

My friend is putting 6- 6 1/2's on his motorcycle. he is super tight on space. He really only has space for the amp. Could he use the capacitor of correct value to cut out bass on each instead of a DSP or this bugger passive modules? He wanted to use DSP but Im not completely sure why it is better than xovers.
@arnicus208

I’ve used capacitors by themselves to cut bass. In the past, some speakers came this way. Best option would be am amp with built in crossovers. Many amps made for bikes are very small and come with the crossover built in.

Have 100wRMS Alpine R-S65C speakers upfront. Maybe due to the bad design of the Corsa D have to run 175wRMS through them. To their credit, they do handle 175wRMS. However, wanted to run then actively, so I phoned up Alpine to find out the RMS of the tweeters... the Alpine representative I spoke to told me, "100wRMS". I seriously disbelief that. So I didn't bother.

(Science experiments) Ever think about rerouting the AC electrical charge from the subwoofers to a DC converter to a 12v battery? Then to whatever you want to charge? Yes you could just simply add a bigger alt and battery more wire… but what would that wattage be like and how quickly if any voltage charge it would put out?
@arnicus208
@arnicus208 Жыл бұрын
I don’t think that would work very well, unless you were running a specific frequency sine wave at a specific volume to give you the proper output for the converter’s input. Definitely thinking outside the box tho.
@BassHead2020
@BassHead2020 Жыл бұрын
@@arnicus208 you would also have to account for the size of the wire as well. And yes at certain resonance you can achieve recharge.

Just bought a Helix DSP PRO Mk3. How in the hell do you reduce the output RCA voltage from 8v to 5v?!! Okay, obviously, you can just cut up an old RCA cable in order to test with a multimeter (RCAs are really too small for crocodile clips)... but it has an RCA input clipping light, so surely it doesn't expect me to have to do that! There must be some sort of software box to click... but for the life of me, I can't find it! Helix manual instructions are EXTREMELY BASIC & LIMITED. Simply implies, "Well, if you're not an expert, then you just have to go to an authorised Helix distributor and pay them to do it." Bet they wouldn't even let you watch & ask questions :(

Also, have Alpine Type-Rs and want to upgrade to Steg Masterstroke MSS 3-ways. However, I only gave 10 channels on my DSP and also want an 8" to fill in the gap between my two ported JL-Audio W3 12"s and my door-mounted midwoofers. Can I use the 3-way crossover to run the tweeter & midrange passively whilst running the midbass actively? If the crossover is only getting the frequencies for midrange & tweeter then I don't see a problem. Am I mistaken?
