Car manufacturers are about to have the hardest time ever trying to hit targets of the number of EVs they MUST SELL. New rules came in for 2024 that of all the cars they sell, a set percentage each year must be FULL electric the target ramps up year on year and some brands are seriously going to struggle to sell this many electric cars. This leaves them with few options pay a hefty fine, sell more EVs or bankrupt the UK business selling cars before the fines are due. Please note am in no way suggesting Suzuki will leave the UK market this video is made purely for entertainment purposes and everything said within it is my personal option.

Toyota have told UK staff they have deferred 2024 ZEV mandate so I'm guessing big trouble for 25 as they also have confirmed no new EV for the UK in the near term. That doesn't sound good unless labour get in and revise the zev mandate.

I think Toyota is in more of a hole with selling zero-emission cars when the deadlines come in esp in the rest of Europe

I think Suzuki is a good shout. However, slightly left-field question, how are Ford doing? They currently only have 1 EV in the UK (not counting the e-Transit). They need to come out with a slew of new EVs soon and discount possibly them heavily from the start if they are to meet the mandate.

@@peteglass3496 this is true, but it's one model mostly developed by another company. I can't believe they developed the Mach-e and have essentially nothing to show for it except the Mach-e itself. They should've used that as a platform for a slew of other vehicles, like VAG with the MEB platform.

Thank You Nicolas for your post, didn’t know about the ZEV mandate, think major partners like Renault alliance will share credits, before they sell the credits to other manufacturers, but some manufacturers don’t have any Zero emission cars yet and they need to give big discounts to ensure cars purchased.

Suzuki. They have no BEVs and only sell relatively low priced cars, so there seems little scope to absorb the fines

I love the Suzuki brand. I’d be sad if they left. My favourite car I ever ran was my 1982 SJ410 “jeep” that I bought in 1983 and ran it until the body detached itself from the chassis. They should be producing a small ev like a slightly enlarged Ignis? I can’t see how their stake in Toyota helps. What are Maruti doing? Have they partnered with other companies in the past?

I love Suzuki too, I've had 6 Vitara's over the past 30 years. My daughters is coming up to 9 years old and 100,000 miles with only the tyres and brakes requiring replacement. Got an EV now, but probably go back to a Vitara when it's due to go back. The government are a waste of space, they'd rather see companies go to the wall and everything go abroad. That won't mean less emissions, just worse emissions in a different country.

My feeling is that now is a good time for Suzuki Honda and Toyota may go for badge engineering Chinese produced EVs , Suzuki already do badge swspping with Toyota and the Chinese producers are looking to ship into Europe already as their home market is struggling and many are in financial difficulty it wiuld give them instant access to distribution and sales network and if they did it with sub £20k cars they would easily sell the numbers these manufacturers need to do buisness as normal.

I agree with you on Suzuki. I had a little Alto 6 years ago bought from my local dealer. I was sorry to see they were putting all their eggs in the hybrid basket. I don’t think they sell enough higher value cars and make enough profit to survive in the UK. They must have plans to exit unless they buy out a Chinese or Indian EV brand or get sold to one.

Good video. Thing is all these car manufacturers have known this was coming and doing at best not a lot is simply handing it to Chinese brands. Even Ford have held back with both the new explorer and the electric puma. And by holding back bringing these cars out means they will have to discount them or offer incentives to sell them to get there quota. Not everybody can buy Tesla or BYD credits which seems crazy to me your just making your competition richer so they could afford to discount there cars down in order to sell more.

It seems the ramp up is a bit fast. Developing new EVs and building out production takes time. Probably any company wanting to survive would be full electric by 2030. I suppose heavily discounting EVs could shift them and help avoid fines. It might work. Toyota seems several sandwiches short of a picnic so I can see them leaving. Though as they go they may announce a new engine that runs on unsweetened custard. Just their usual lunacy.

£15,000 fine manufacturer doesn't make that much profit in a car .... Especially with the massive R and D costs involved. The ZED could destroy the car market , there may only be one option for smaller manufacturers and that won't be paying the fine or cutting prices. May not be that bad next year but if other countries don't have harsh ZED equivalent some won't /can't speed it up just for the UK

All the car brands have had time to get their act together. If they haven't then they deserve to stop selling in the UK. Not a problem because the Chinese will fill that gap with EVs everyone will be able to afford.
