I love this pencil! I was surprised by the results of the score card and portrait drawing! This is an amazing pencil!!! Thanks to Ramon who told me about Marie's pencils in the livestream last month. For Drawing Courses & Demos click... app.gumroad.com/bradwynn
In this pencil review I discovered a new favorite. I didn't expect to at all but the results don't lie. Check out the Amazon links if you' like. Prices and availability do depend on location. This pencil test got me thinking about doing more in the future. Next I'm testing out Ritmo B, Primo 59B and need one other to test. Any ideas? Maybe one of the Nitro pencils?

Since we're nerding out on pencils: I think one point to notice is that Conté Pierre Noire 1710 B isn't really charcoal but rather Ampélite (also known as Cannel Coal or Candle Coal) - i.e. It's actual Oil Shale, closer to actual Coal with Pyrite and Limestone - so the different handling of it is explained by that. Conté does have actual charcoal pencils, those are the Fusain line (Conté 728, from HB to 2B) and also the stronger/reinforced charcoal-carbon pencil of Carbone line (Conté 722 from HB to 3B) that they recommend for small sketches and detail work.

If you use the AFMAT manual (helix) pencil sharpener (on MARIE’S) you’ll get massive exposure of charcoal without having to use the blade, 3/4” easy. Marie’s are compressed paper wrapped, not wood. I recently bought a box after seeing an artist use them. They are THE BOMB. I’m amazed how strong their SOFT charcoal is. My box is the “SOFT”. You can get “VERY SOFT” and “HARD” (I think) as well. Good luck!

I saw them one time, I think they are carbon pencils, though I have yet to try them. Staedtler also has carbon pencils, the mars lumograph black. I dunno about derwent.

Awesome comparison. I’ll have to give the Marie’s a try. Seems a good economical choice.

I usually use an Afmat Long pencil point sharpener with my conte pencils and one thing I have found is that you can make your pencil sharpeners last longer and more likely to work on those long tapers if you shave the finish off. The finish on the pencils dulls the sharpener faster and I think when it starts to get a little dull it catches the finish and twists the pencil causing the lead to break. You might try it. I haven't sharpened and pencil by hand in a few years now since I have this Afmat and shave the pencil down a little before putting it in there.

i consider to buy one also, because i want to spent my short time after work with drawing, not pencil sharpening with a blade what is to much time consuming. Which type do you have?

Unless something has happened in recent years I three years ago the Conte 3 became so fragile I could rarely sharpen one without breaking the 'lead". Sometimes I would lose 2/3rds of the pencil which was a heartbreaker for a 3 dollar pencil. A shame because it used to be my favorite pencil. The problem with the Conte was so bad that Watts no longer recommended any pencil except for the Wolf. And weird that it would be so fragile considering its far fatter than the Wolfs. I like the Wolf's carbon 6 over the 4. Obviously I need to try this Maries.

Great video man, I could never get into the Contes for some reason. they are too scratchy for some reason and almost get a waxy texture after you try to do multiple layers or after erased layers. having said that they have great range of value and such but i prefer the Wolfes Carbon. Any tips on how to get the Contes less waxy please comment anyone

You took The Conté Pierre Noire B against the Wolff Carbon 4B, but the Conté 3B is darker than the Wolff 6B ! Really not a fair comparison ! Also the Conté Carbone would be a much better opponent as they are actually much closer to the Wolff, about the same lead size and the same feel ( in europe the Conté are cheaper, but I do prefer the Wolf performance here, better consistency and smoothness ) The thick lead and special pigment formulation of the Pierre Noire makes that pencil really unique I think. My prefered drawing method is a mix of Pierre Noire ( 2B or 3B ) and vine charcoal, but for a single/dual pencil sketch I may favor the Wolff. ( depends of the paper also ) Never heard of Marie's, they seem indeed interesting, gonna try them as soon as I can :)

Hi, im doing the watts atelier online course, do you think the maries soft pencil is good for that course, or for the courses on your gumroad? Here in my country its difficult to get the conte or the wolffs.

Yes. I think Maries work great in place of the conte. I use them interchangeably with conte a paris and wolffs.

I guess it's not a wood pencil, but Nitram was mentioned as an option to try. A bit pricey, and you have to sand it into shape...
