I have been using these tapes to patch holes in my pool cover at the end of the season for nearly four decades. Once applied, they then are submerged for about 8 months prior to the next season. Everything I tried fell off easily in a short period of time until I discovered the black Gorilla Tape. I have been using it for many seasons and some of my patches with it have survived 3 full seasons (24 months under water). Usually, I just add an additional strip around the periphery of the patch and it's good to go.

I always found it interesting that, while classic duct tape has 1001 uses, one thing it's really lousy for is sealing up HVAC ducts... Which was sort of the whole reason the tape was created! Your aging test shows how the original type of duct tape disintegrates after only a year, losing its outer coatings, becoming more of a fabric mesh that won't seal anything and leaving behind crusty, dried up old glue deposits. Some of the newer duct tapes appear to hold up a little better, but when it comes to sealing HVAC ducts I bet none last as long as the metallic aluminum tapes.

@@Trooper_ChloeM Close. In WW2 they packed ammo in boxes sealed with paper tape and then dipped in wax to be made waterproof. The problem is the tear tab on the paper tape-wrapped boxes would tear off, leaving the soldiers frantically trying to open a box that lost its opening tab.. while under fire. So Vesta Stoudt, a mother of 2 Sailors from Illinois, petitioned the US Military to create a cloth-backed tape with waterproof adhesive. They ignored her, of course, she wrote to President Roosevelt, he loved the idea. He commissioned the military to make the tape, the military gave the project to a company that was a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. The military called it 100-Miles-Per-Hour tape because it could be used to fix anything, up to and including jeeps and planes. So there you have it.

'duct' tape was originally created to satisfy the need for a light-weight, waterproof fabric patch with an adhesive backing in WW2, as another commenter explained in detail. It was degined to be a cheap, easy, TEMPORARY patch for boots, clothing, hoses, power cables, packs and vehicles. In the 1950s, it was sold to the general public, where it was marketed as "duct tape." A cheap, easy way to seal ducts... Except... Affordable central hvac was still twenty years away, the avg person didn't have ducts in their home. Only upscale businesses had it. Builders started using duct tape as an upsell to business installs, because TBH, it was the first and only option available TO seal ducts. In the 1970s, when new construction homes were built with central hvac, sealing the ducts was still an upsell. It was an optional "upgrade" for the home. Historically, energy has always been cheap in the US. As a result, the upfront cost of sealing duct work was considered a luxury, like how power windows used to be "upgrades" for new cars. In fact, the act of sealing ducts in residential builds remained relatively uncommon until the late 1980s when energy prices began to rise. I have experience with residential real estate across the US, particularly older homes. From experience I can say if the home has rigid ducts and paper backed insulation, 95% of the time they aren't sealed at all, or there's a bunch of melted duct tape. Which leads me to my point. When 80s inflation hit energy prices, having sealed ducts seemed like a pretty good idea. Strapped for cash, homeowners went for the most affordable diy solution, a light-weight, waterproof, adhesive backed fabric called duct tape. That's the story of the journey taken by duct tape from allied military supply kits, to luxury theaters and high end department stores, into the junk drawer of nearly every American household. Duct tape can't actually do the thing it's named after. But maybe that's the point. Duct tape has been an inspiration for several generations. Just as the army found applications for it beyond it's intended purpose, so have millions of average people since then. Entire communities exist online around using duct tape in new ways. There are tutorials on how to make things ranging from shoes and shirts to swords and cups, entirely from duct tape. Maybe it was named after one of the few things it CAN'T do on purpose. Maybe it was trying to teach us something. Bonus story if you read this far. In 1879, a chemist in Missouri created a new antiseptic for use during surgery. It sold okay, but the hospital market wasn't very large. So he made a new dilution and sold it as a cure for gonorrhea, and a second dilution he sold as a floor cleaner. In the 1890s, he partnered with a pharmacist who began producing his formula and marketing it to dentists for oral care. In 1914, the pharmacy began selling the undiluted formula off the shelf to consumers as a mouth wash. They called it Listerine. The way we think about using duct tape to seal ducts today is obvious, but if you go back far enough, people would think you're crazy for rinsing your mouth with floor cleaner.

The Navy uses a product similar (Probably the same thing) as that FiberFix Wrap to repair battle damage to high pressure pipes on warships (Rated up to 150psi). Isolate the leak. Submerge the roll in a bucket of water for 30 seconds. Wrap the pipe. Let set. Then re-pressurize the pipe. Works well as an easy to teach tool in the pipe patching / damage control world.

Flex tape is just ice and water shield, it's literally made to be water proofing for buildings, I would hope it did better than duct tape in the weather. I really don't know what duct tape is used for. I've never used it on ducts, because every time you go to work on ducts and someone used it, it's just a brittle mess, even after bring in a crawl space, which isn't a very extreme environment. Good Hvac people use aluminum tape imo.
