I believe anyone who is making some kind of art and art-related things can call themselves an artist. But it is tricky, I noticed. If I call myself an artist, people expect me to be a fine artist (mostly oil painting in a classic way :))). If I call myself an illustrator people expect me or they generally ask me "oh, so you illustrate picture books for kids?". I can't find a word that perfectly describes all the hats I am wearing as a freelancer. So I usually say I am an artist/illustrator who sells online and has a youtube channel :)). So that people understand what I do. Personally, I feel like an artist and that's it. Doesn't matter that much. It's very nice that you are so transparent with us, Mimi, I think it takes courage, because not many want to disclose their income, which is totally understandable, they don't have to, but it is useful for beginners to have a general idea about income streams and financial expectations.

The last time I told someone I was a digital artist, their brain immediately went to "Oh! So you're a graphic designer?"😅 They weren't being snobby just curious, but man I felt a little awkward saying, "no not really" haha!😅 Like there was some invisible expectation.

"Artist" is an all encompassing word, so "artist" would be the word you're looking for to describe your many hats

Personally, I think content creation is very artistic. Think about it: no scientist spends all of their time in the lab. A big chunk of their time is spent applying for research grants, going to conferences, training research students, writing scientific papers, and giving lectures. Content creation is like the teaching and conferencing and grant application side of art for many artists nowadays. It's where we form our community, exchange ideas and upskill, and those are wonderful things. Art and content creation are very compatible, and I don't think we need to necessarily delineate between the two.

🥰🎨 I'm a painter and I tried making youtube videos in the past but it took so much time each week, so i decided to stop and focus on growing my painting skills instead. I'm fairly active on instagram and tiktok to promote my art, and i sell originals and prints. I worked very hard the past couple of years to grow this income stream and it worked! I'm about to quit my side job next month to be a full time artist, selling my art and doing commissions! 🦋✨️🧚‍♀️ I think it's important to try different things to figure out what works for us!!

I strongly believe that content creation is an art form, and I will die on that hill. 😂 For real though, if you're writing scripts, voice acting, working with photography and cinematography, editing, etc. These are all just different art forms. Even the marketing side of it can be considered art. An art is something with a set of skills that require honing and creative thinking. So I tend to think of them as one and the same. 😊

Here I am struggling to wrap my head around that being an artist is a valid career pursuit, and there you are showing me you are thriving 😭 What's stopping me is my lack of consistent style (I paint intuitively) and lack of execution due to anxiety and depression

I don’t know you, but I know for me that I can relate to those thoughts and the anxiety and depression, I have bipolar and go on weeks of everything is great and super motivated and then weeks of feeling lazy and sad and unmotivated. But I’ve recently started taking making videos/content and taking it seriously and practicing art more and practicing editing. It also REALLYYYY helps if you could find a friend to be productive with even if you’re not doing the same things, as them being productive can help you to be productive. But whatever you want to do, then you got this! We both do. I believe in you, just have fun doing whatever you do, don’t stress about it too much

Wonderful video! We are all artists no matter what what % is art creation and direct sales or content creation. I think the past couple of years may have tired some KZfaqrs out and they quit but Im seeing little channels begin everyday. Its so wonderful. My family thought that Id have to pick between commercial art and having exhibitions and musuem shows... when something is niggling at you you just have to prove them wrong. Im working on new work which I was once ashamed of and in the past week Ive been working on my CV to send to exhibitions and licenscing directors. Im not going to be put down by mean people. My next step after that is to start the KZfaq Channel Ive always wanted to. My name is Rose and am sending greetings from sunny Athens, Greece.

This video also reflects your learning. I see you as an artist of these new times, who learns and improves every day and sells her art. Illustrating is not just "drawing", it is knowing where and how to place the strokes, the sizes, the harmony, the composition, the colours! How to combine palettes and to do it systematically following your own style and sometimes going out of it. Communicating what you do and in such a neat and real way, each video shows what you have really been doing and you have developed not only the artist but also the entrepreneur and all that is involved in running a "small business", with many clients from what the statistics show! I come from being a native of no tech or social media, so I’ve been a professional artist without needing to create content. I miss that to be honest! I’m navigating now creating content as well and I’m not entirely happy about it as it takes more time than actually making art for me, but the landscape as an artist has changed and I guess my discomfort in creating content is one of those growing pains! I was particularly interested in your number of hours within each sector, rather than your earnings so thank you for that!

Thanks for taking your time for this very interesting topic. I love they way you explain things. Very calm voice and getting to the point. I consider myself a hybrid :) Graphic Designer and Artist (now starting more art again). For years people (or I myself), have been telling me: you can't make money through digital art. Now I am going on 40 and I just don't care anymore. Life is to short and my time to precious. So now going more in the digital art direction. Thanks for your time! Cheers from Munich/Germany!

Thank you for this perspective. Tooootally agree! I define myself to myself as an "artist who teachers" 😉. The "outside world" (aka, the internet) mostly sees "Tatyana-the-art-teacher". It's interesting. A lot of art making happens in private... and yes, then there is all the work around having a business, teaching, products, etc. It's really interesting to hear that it's not just me feeling this way! 😆 Your art is beautiful - thank you for sharing your gifts. 🥰

Or is it about what they earn most money from?" I LOVE this question, it even challenges what we define ourselves to ourselves (XD) and makes me think about how every label depends on which meaning we give to it and everyone of us might have a different definition (or even our definition might change with time) 🤯

You ARE an artist! Are the great artists of the past any less of an "artist" for teaching apprentices? Or for marketing their art to galleries to make a living? No... not at all... just because the specifics have changed (who the students are, how/where your art is marketed, etc) doesn't mean you are not still an artist.

If you make art, you're an artist. If you make money on your art, you're a professional artist. You might or might not be a full-time pro artist. (Although if your content is *about* art, including the business of art, then IMO that's still art related, and if all your income comes is art related -- selling or licensing art, merch with your art on it, art supplies and resources, art classes, art business classes, art content, anything related -- then you're a full-time artist. And if someone's questioning the details of how you earn your living because they're looking for an excuse to cut you down or mock you or snark at you for not meeting their personal standards of how a "real" artist spends their time, that person is an idiot and I personally don't care what idiots think.

So if you were only a finance youtuber you'd still make a living, but if you were only an artist you'd be making less than 1/3rd of what you do. A sad realization for people who don't want to be content creators.

With my current income breakdown and if you include my art Patreon, then yes, but I would also have 2/3 of my time freed up if I weren't making content which I'd be able to put into more classic art avenues like commissions, licensing, or selling products
