Between pods and bank sticks, there’s only one choice for me.
What I want from my setup is to do 2 things: the first one, give me the best bite indication and second, do the hooking of the carp for me before I even get to the rod. If my setup achieves that, I know I’m going to put more fish on the bank.And I can only do that with bank sticks.

I have learned so much new information in 4 minutes that im utterly surprised that Matt is not a speaker at The Big One show. i understand living in France can be an issue for that but if you held a 6 hours demonstration, i would watch the whole thing with glowing eyes.

Another super informative video Matt! In my 3 decades of carp fishing I've come to exactly the same conclusion. Whatever you use, make sure it's rock solid! Personally I don't mind the weight penalty and use a set of stainless bank sticks 90% of the time. An X pod and some bike bungees will do the rest.

We can debate stability, clutch settings etc all day long, i use both, if the ground is too hard i can't push sticks in by hand i don't wonna use a mallet to get the desired depth for stability so I'll use a pod. Again, using a bivvy peg on the pod but having to mallet that in defeats my purpose of choosing which one of the two to use. Jrc x lite pod about 25 yrs old, still love it, does the job and now has sentimental value from all the memories lol. ✌️🇬🇧

Seml tight cluthes or baitrunner with solid set ups have been used for years effectively and almost mandatory in most normal weedy situations. Foaming up or mitchell churner fishing worked before reels improved. Improvements in banksticks help, although i have only used chris brown gear for many years, it replaced old stainless gear effectively.

Really well put together video Matt. I have used bungees and bivvy / tent pegs to secure my pod when I use one for over thirty years now. My tip is to have them custom made to required colours lengths so they are more efficient for purpose and more aesthetically pleasing they are very cheap to purchase or indeed make yourself. There really is no argument regarding efficient bite detection between a correctly set up bank stick set up and a pod, pods are far more limited and limiting. One thing I would add if fishing at right angles to your pod with tight lines apart from in addition to using the bungee method I advocate a bankstick taller than the level of the rods firmly positioned close to the rod on the side of direction of pull to help prevent the rod from being displaced by a take. I use the sonik bank sticks they brake in to 2 parts a 6inch spike you can screw to the bottom of buzz bars then the telescopic part screws in to thw top of the buzz bar and you can adjust easy most soild way to fish buzzbar at the floor

Interesting stuff...but I have used a sturdy/heavy stainless chub rodpod (and some tall-ish banks sticks for zig rigging and feeder fishing) for decades without any rod or rest issues! Although admittedly I only ever set clutches to about a Ib or so...just enough to set the hook and run! ...But on a few occassions I have seen and helped other anglers fish in their errant rods....including my father...which was/is still childishly amusing to this day 😂

I use a gardener mushroom head which fits into my banksticks so i can rubber hammer them into the ground

Totally agree Matthew, just a couple of things. Because I fish mainly gravel pits I use a Solar Worldwide pod which just doesn't move because of the weight of the bloody thing and also Solar butt grips,. I also fish with my butt eye behind the alarm, the only reason to use bobbins in my opinion is in case of dropbacks so the bobbin is up tight to the rod so everything is rock solid. Another thing I use now is chaincore which is twice as heavy of leadcore but is unbelievably supple, to which I tighten up too first and then tighten everything up rod end and as you say the fish hook themselves

I prefer bank sticks when possible as I like to have each rod pointing directly at the rig. I use a Jag auger for gravel etc.

Hi mate, sorry to hear that you’re a little lost. The rig videos are simply the result of experiments on various waters over a number of years. You’re not the first person to mention this. We will be doing a video explaining in much more detail what I use when and why but we are not ready to film that yet. The most universal, effective, bottom bait rig that I know is the good old mono hair. Just match the hook size to the hooklink size because of the different eye sizes. Size 8 Nash Twister for 0.30 - 0.40. Size 6 Nash Twister for 0.50 and size 6 chod Claw for 0.60. You can kick the hair out with a blowback tube, a hook bead or a 3mm bead. It doesn't really matter. And use a running ledger. Loads of options. Hi,Matthew! A few tips for fishing the running rig on rivers,where we keep the rods upwards,to keep as much line out of the water(how to set the brake,especially)? My confidence in a proper hook set is pretty low,but i don t like the lead clip rig. Thanks in advance!

Hi mate, running rigs for river carp work really well and the takes are spectacular. I’ve been fishing this way for years. Use individual banksticks and a secure backrest to create a rock solid setup. If you need to fish tips up then do so. Set the clutch to deliver 1-2lbs of force and you are good to go. This is only good if the bank is soft soil. Where I am at the banks are covered with large bolders. Or you are fishing off a dock. We use a set up made out of PVC. But this is good to know.

Hi Andy, my Harrisons have a set of Steve Neville Ball peg retainers whipped onto the blank. I had these rods customs built so I had the rod builder do this for me. I also have the Nash Dwarf rods that have a ring underneath the shrink wrap handle that does a great job of holding the rod in place. A cheap solution is just to upgrade your rear rod rests. There are loads to choose from and you get what you pay for. Glad you're enjoying the videos 😊

Thanks Matt, as always informative and thought provoking! One question on a side note, how do you setup for 2 (or 3) rods fishing tight on 1 spot? Do you tight line or use top leads to minimise aa hooked fish cleaning up the other rod(s)? Can't find anything useful on the bank end of this approach, only the rig end and casting. Any tips welcome as I got proper tangled last time out, thanks Pete

Hi Pete, I’ll be honest with you, fishing two or three on a spot is not my thing. Whenever I’ve tried it, it didn't go well! Young Finley is a master at this but I can’t follow the logic of how he makes it work. TBH I’d much rather spread my rods out anyway and I hardly ever spod/spomb. If I’m casting then I’ll just create a long arc of bait with a throwing stick and spread my rods along it. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

One of our local waters has almost no features and is constant 4 foot deep, sand bottom and sneaky fish. The features there are they seem to avoid, even the island as it gets heavily fished. Trying the 2 rods in a spot as an experiment and improving leading/spod and casting. Cheers Pete

I hated pods for years, i thought they looked ugly and far far too big. Now pods have been streamlined im a huge fan of how easy they are to setup because i leave my alarms ect on them. Bank sticks will always be more sturdy unless you are using something extra to pin the rod down though.

Hi mate, thanks for the good idea 😊 Here are a few options: to connect your mainline to a leader I would either use the palomar knot on the 5 turn uni-knot. We cover the uni knot method is this leader video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jc-heJemmJuxe2w.html To connect a lead free leader to a swivel you can either just splice it in place when you make the leader or connect them using the loop to loop method. I've started using my Jag nano pod everywhere now. Absolutely love it. If using on wood, can use 4 screws to screw it down and if fishing hard or soft ground, I'll use 4 bivvy pegs. Also use the lockdown grips coupled with the rod lockers. Great for snag fishing. I've fished locked up many of times and doesn't budge an inch. Packs away in a tiny bag and weighs nothing

I also use bivvy pegs when the ground is suitable and when fishing on decking I use two 5kg weights strapped to the pod with a rachet. I fish locked on occasions and the pod doesn't budge.

I prefer bank sticks and rods pointing towards the rig but sadly on the waters I'm on currently it is impossible. Tight swims with a stage to fish from means it has to be pods or stage stands. I'm not keen on stage stands so it has to be a pod, it's tied down to a bracket screwed into the stage at the front and a bivvy peg at the back. It works for me on these waters. Where possible it's bank sticks that screw in, I have an aversion to using a mallet to drive them in, just too noisy.

Rod pod defiantly for me my pod is heavy and rock solid very quick to set up on any type of bank, gone are the day's of trying to bang bank stick's into rock hard banks and making lots of noise doing it, some banks are so hard made of hardcore ect you can't even screw a bank stick in.

Hi mate, I think mine are 6” at the front and 5.5” at the rear. I still have to line up my reel handles carefully on my big pit Shimano‘s as the rods are quite tight together but I can make it work with a bit of fiddling about.

Thanks for your response. I have Shimano Ultegra 14000 XSE on both rods, I love the UK style rod setup, but I can't image to line up handles with 5.5" buzz bar. You must be a magician :-)

@@marekvinkler3899 Not really lol. Necessity is the mother of invention. Just set the reel handle horizontally facing backwards rather than forwards. That way each reel handle sits behind the body of the next reel. The short body of the Ultegra will help with this. Watch any of my videos where I’m using buzz bars and you’ll soon spot how I do it. Failing that, just fish individual bank sticks. I do this a lot! Best of luck, Matt.

Hi mate, thanks for the suggestion. Winter is all about location and timing. Your approach needs to be rock solid. If you are struggling to catch consistently in the spring and summer then the winter isn't for you. What I do is pick the weather windows that are the most favourable (warm, wet and mild) and set some PVA traps. Every 24hrs I move those traps about until I get a pickup and then work from there. You won’t need much bait. Rigs are the same as always, simple, strong and with a really sharp hook. I use a big lead 4 Oz with a loose glutch my lead sink the hook and then when carp shoot off my pod don't fall over cause the clutch is loose fish is hook against lead not clutch that way what do you think I make my rigs bit longer

Hi, I have been thinking about what you often mention, feathering the cast and feeling the lead. I am left handed and have always set my rods to fight with my strong hand and reel with my weak, this means I am reeling with my Right hand, when I try to feather the spool the line is coming towards the end of my finger and often "hits" it rather than being able to "feather" past it if I was using my Left hand. Do you think I would be better off setting the reels to Right handed for Carp fishing, I have only got in to it this Year so is all new to me, although I have been fishing on and off since I was a kid and mainly Fly fishing over the last 10 Years or so. Be grateful for your thoughts. Regards, Chris.

Hi Chris, if you are left handed and have learnt to cast left handed then I’d say it’s going to be fairly difficult to swap hands. I know that I'd have a lot of difficulty in doing so! I feather and then trap with my index finger because I have long fingers. I know that some anglers have to use their other hand to feather and then trap the lead. Rather than changing your casting from LH to RH why don’t you try experimenting with cupping the spool with your right hand. I’m not sure if this solution would work for you but there’s only one way to find out. The other point I’d say is that if you clip the rod up to a set distance then you wouldn't need to worry about which hand you are using but judging how hard to cast becomes really critical. It’s easy enough to master at short range but gets progressively harder with range. There’s actually no need to feather before you trap the line anyway as long as you are casting just hard enough. Hope that gives you a couple of options to try. Cheers, Matt.

@@matthewcollinsangler Thanks very much, will have to speriment 🙂 long casting is not something I do anyway as local to me the pools all seem fairly small, at least the ones I have tried so far. Also like Fly fishing, often you cast and cast then catch in the margins. Thanks for the advice. I might be able to swap hands but will see which works out best. Casting accuracy is not one of my best skills though, got to practice more.

Banging them in with a mallet. It kills your swim. Some say it doesn't, but it really does affect some fish.

You'd need some form of really in depth study to prove that, which would be impossible to do. next time you're swimming or in the bath, put your ear under the water and tap the bath. sounds is amplified dramatically. even if it doesn't affect them, i would strongly suggest its better to screw them in rather than bang them in. same goes for bivvy pegs.

@@jamesriley6344 No worries mate, and you're right, I can't prove it for sure, it's just based on my years and experience at my lake. Here's something that happened this year. I had a tree fall in the lake while we had guests. I was on site for 3 hours with the chainsaw not far from the swim where the angler had 2 takes while I was there. I'm not saying I would use a mallet all the time, and on certain venues it's not appropriate at all. Anyway, that's what I love about our sport, this huge range of experiences.

Whole mussels? No, but I have experimented with the Nash mussel blend and added that to my stick mix when I was river carping earlier this year as I knew the carp were eating them as it’s a natural food source for them. I had my best ever river season with two 40s so I’ll definitely be using it again. It's not cheap but when used in a stick mix it goes a long way. I’ve still got half a pot left in the freezer 👍

Hi mate, that’s an old Fox rig box. They don’t make them anymore. For storing lead free leaders I keep mine in the wallet organiser that lives inside my XL workbox. Inside the flap there’s an array of 4 x 3 zip lock style plastic wallets that are perfect for storing 1m leaders ready made up 👍

@@matthewcollinsangler Nice one mate, thanks. Another question if thats ok. On the water I’ve joined for winter, all braided line is banned, mainline, leaders and hook lengths, even coated. Mainline and leaders isn’t a problem but I like using solid bag and not seen any fluorocarbon rigs for bags, any ideas? Oh and a tip you can pass on if you want, if you haven’t got anything on the rod butt to stop it sliding forward, a piece of catapult elastic round the handle and fastened with a zip tie underneath does the job. That’s what we did 30+ years ago lol

@@Yosser70 Hi mate, there’s a very good reason why you can’t find any videos on fluorocarbon rigs for solid PVA…. because they don’t work. Fluoro is way too stiff to be folded into a solid PVA bag. I know some guys will tell you that it can be done by having the fluorocarbon rig on the outside but if you’re going to do that then you may as well just wrap paste around the lead. I don’t use fluorocarbon at all. For me it’s expensive and I just don’t buy into the whole invisibility thing. All I would do would be to use bog standard mono and make up PVA mesh sticks and hook them on. That is literally all I do most of the time. The mono can be anything from 0.30 zig-flo right up to 0.60 heavy duty snag leader. It’s whatever you need to suit the venue. I’ve caught loads of carp just using my mainline for hooklink (Bullet or Big Game). The only downside is that you need to love rig tying as mono rigs damage very easily but as the hook will be blunt after one cast, you need to change your hook anyway. @@matthewcollinsangler I shouldn’t have said fluorocarbon, as I already use zig line on your recommendation. You’er right about using mesh, I’ll just get some bigger diameter, and that’ll replace the bags. I just like the neatness of bags but want to use effective rigs. On the subject of rigs, I used those curved Nash run clips the other day, great bits of kit and crazy takes!

@@Yosser70 Hi Dave, ah right, great 😊 Yeah the zig-flo is good stuff. If you need something stronger or stiffer then I use the Nash heavy duty snag leader in 0.50 or 0.60. You get 100m for £10 so it’s a bargain compared to fluoro. Glad that you tried the run clip. Yeah the takes are amazing. Mono + mesh bags + the run clip are a great combo so enjoy!

Are your rods custom made ? I wanna get one of those ball peg things on your rods cos ive had by butt eye bent back on its self and snapped as i put my butt eye infront of my alsrms.

I do have a set of custom made Harrisons. Very nice but very expensive. I only use them for long range work. For my river carping I use my Nash Dwarfs which have a collar on the handle which makes for an extremely secure position for the backrest and does the same job for a fraction of the price. Any rod builder could add a ball peg retainer to the rods you have.

A medium or large cable tie with the buckle facing down just behind rod handle works. The semi tight cable tie can be moved if required. The buckle sits against the rod rest just as the whipped on ball grip does.

Some places at The river and urban fishing you need to use rod pod. Personaly The worst is bank stics for two rods with stics to base… Also if you have a Good friction pressure, you cant lose your rode🙈🎣👍#fishhobo

I'm using OMC Elbowz. Gives you the option to use them as a traditional buzz bar or a goalpost setup which covers of pretty much any scenario

Yes, I mention that in the video and it's easy if you're over soft ground - it's harder over hard ground or gravelled swims and there a a few tips I show in the video in that case.

Love your videos but this one feels a bit misleading in parts. Modern rod pods such as those from Meccanica Vadesse, Dayko or the high-end from Fox don't have any of the issues described. Once you lock them in the ground with the pod anchors extensions(just like a tent), they will not budge no matter the take you have or the angle you're fishing. You can even lock them in wood as well with smaller nails. For the last 2 years I've been intensively fishing european big carp lakes with a rodpod at almost feeder level aggresive angles, with a completely tight clutch and I haven't had any issue with my rods/pod. Using snag bars and a tight grip on the rod will ensure this. The effect you're describing though is indeed very real and that's why I fish like this, just wished you would've given rod pods a more in-depth review. I also carry bank sticks with me every time, you can't discount the versatility swims with many trees/obstructions.

Completely get what you’re saying mate and it’s great to hear from different anglers about how good the top end pods are so thanks for that. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. I’ve only seen a couple of high end pods at the lake but I still see quite a few anglers each year with inadequate bank ware - so that’s more my angle here really. Get your rod locked down tie a set of scales on the end of the line and keep adjusting your clutch until it starts giving line when about 2lb of force registers on your scales. Once set then just try pulling line off your clutch by hand and you will get a ‘feel’ for how tight you need to set your clutch. This can be done at home in your garden and only needs to be once.

I know it's not doable everywhere but some places it’s totally fine. Depends on the venue and length of the session. Obviously, not something I use when it's going to spook the fish off.

@@marklilly1877 I totally agree that what you're describing happens, all I'm saying is that it depends on the lake. At my lake, this year, I had to get the chainsaw out because a tree had fallen in the lake while we had guests. The angler continued to fish while I was chainsawing nearby and caught 2 carp. I know they're used to all the noise around them here, just an example mate 😊

Completely disagree, Rod pods are way more better and stable, you can also use bivvy pegs to hold the rod pod down not only this but most day ticket venues are stone or wood platforms. I could debate this allday

No worries mate 👍 Yes, I talk about how to make the pod more stable with bivvy pegs, great trick, I've used it many times with guests at my lake. As I said at the end of the video, it's a question of personal preference, as long as the setup is solid enough.

Pods can never be more stable that Bank sticks. You can have a 12 inches of steel in the ground, can't do that with a pod.

I use both. Sometimes you're fishing on wood, concrete or rocky ground and then a rod pod is essential. If I want it more stable I weigh it down with a small sandbag.

I totally hear you about pods. I lost a rod many years ago to a savage take. The angle was wrong and the pod was tipped over, rod was away in an instant into very deep water. 🫤
