Here in Belgium, a team of renowned scientists did their own research and testing with regard to safety head gear. Their conclusion was remarkable: it turned out that the safest thing to wear to protect your head were caps, bonnets, berets and other head gear made from wool or cotton. They concluded this after dropping a safety helmet and a beret from a height of 30 meters. The safety helmet was broken but the beret was still intact.....

Yep. The steel helmet does not deform at all under 1000. This means that the whole force of an impact is given to your head. if a material is deforming it is transforming energy. And that already transformed energy wont be forced on you anymore.

As a disclaimer; the force the helmet can withstand has almost nothing to do with how well it protects your skull in an accident. The purpose of the helmet IS to break at impact such that your skull does not - it acts as a shock absorber. So, take the result with a grain of salt. The weakest helmets here may still be great shock absorbers, and hence still good helmets (for their designated purposes).

@@HydraulicPressChannel Yeah. Since ballistic helmet and crash helmet have completely different uses. As you said being collapsed by press isn't exactly what either of the helmet types are designed for. Though interesting still. Ballistic helmet absolutely must be as strong as possible. Since the purpose is to stop or deflect projectiles. However usually the projectiles aren't massive enough to cause crash type problems (massive accelerations, momentum shifts), since the projectiles those are designed for are small mass. Small mass high speed. Massive amounts of kinetic energy for piercing and deforming etc. , but not as much momentum (E=m*v**2/2 vs p=mv). So hold firm and deflect or stop the projectile, make it expend it's kinetic energy trying to reform the ballistic protection. If the projectile is massive enough to cause momentum shift problems (bang the head around inside the helmet/ fling the whole head and helmet around on the neck).... Well bye bye, lower the curtains, just got hit by a tank cannon directly or something. Helmet won't help. Where as crash helmet is for momentum threats mostly. Larger mass (the head itself) experiencing accelerations. Accelerations is the killer here. Hence for example the HANS device on racing drivers, prevent the heads from having massive acceleration that snap the neck. Usually such collisions are against solid objects (the ground, a wall, a tree trunk etc.), so there is no holding firming and pushing the crash away. So instead break and buy time. That is most important. The longer the crash takes deforming the helmet, the smaller the accelerations involved. Thus less chances of concussions and so on. Same as with car crash crumble zones. Massive looking carnage, but for a reason. The deforming takes energy and most importantly time.

They're not really designed to break so much as compress more on the outside while staying the same dimensions on the inside where your head is. I have been in accident where a helmet saved my life and it did not break apart, but it did get crushed on the outside and not on the inside. Also the last two helmets are not supposed to withstand something like vehicle accident, but to stop a projectile like a bullet penetrating.

Kai One_PBE yes really. Im a bmw technician. Both these car brands are just made to wear down. For example, on mercedes brand cars, they make the brake disc smaller than it should be leaving a small amount untouched which causes uneven wear. I know all car companies have their flaws but euro cars are a bit much. Fun cars though.

So you're right but also not right. So The bicycle helmet withstood a force of I'd say about 800 kg (7.8 kN) before it started to fail. Which translates to the average European adult (70.8 kg) experiencing an acceleration of 110 m/s^2 which if riding at an average speed of 15.5 km/h (4.3 m/s) would be a crash that takes 0.04 seconds to come to a complete stop all directed at the head. As to the motorcycle helmet, while it began to deform early, the force was displaced around the entire shape and left the head intact until around (I'd estimate) 1500 kg (14 kN) which for an average adult at Finnish highway speeds of 50 km/h (13.89 m/s) would be an accident that would bring them to a complete stop at around 0.06 seconds. So the Smashinator would be like testing the penetrating power of a bullet by shooting it at wet cardboard.

Motorcycle helmets are definitely affected by age. The plastics break down which is why it’s recommended you replace them every five years. More often if left in direct sunlight. I replace mine every other year (I’m a commuter, so my helmets see a lot more abuse than your regular fair-weather rider). Also, some helmets are built different than others, so get a ‘true’ read on what motorcycle helmets take could be tricky.

Mountain bike helmets can be more expensive than motorcycle helmets, and that's because of the technology everyone is trying to develop to reduce rotational injuries to the brain, which are fatal. Having a lot of pressure of a hard hit on a helmet is not a true test of its abilities, just like seeing a smashed up car can look less safe than a car in the same crash with much less visible damage.

7:32 that is a PASGT helmet used by US military in the late 70’s to early 2000’s. It is rated lvl IIA NIJ and is only designed to stop shrapnel however it can deflect some rifle rounds from long distances if you get the right angle

These helmets you tested are for absorbing sudden impact or shocks and not slow crushing force like a hydraulic press. Inorder for the normal helmets to withstand the crushing force of a press it needs to be supported with steel or such metals instead of materials which absorb the impact force.
