Good stuff! As a Brit, I have to say that nice Defender can be had in the UK for 1/10th of that, but they are also as common as Ford pickups there. Have you considered a fiberglass hardtop? Or even a station Wagon conversion? I daily drive a 90 V8 station wagon, and it's (a bit) quieter inside. The depreciation on the RR is a great reason to buy a Defender- that alone is worth 11 points, making the Defender the winner!

Talking about price difference india definitely takes the cake. In my country a iphone xs max 64 gb rn STARTS at 1600$ and a xs costs about 1500$ for the base model. So when i see people complaining that iPhone in usa is expensive i kinda think about it. When it comes to cars a base model diesel 180 hp bmw 3 series costs about 69,000$ (48 lakh rupees) Yes u read that correct. A c class base model crosses about 70k And uhh since the JLR group is owned by an indian u will think a Range Rover should be round about same price. Nope..the base ramge rover vogue(lower than se) costs about 320,000$. It’s actually absurd. The amount if taxes on these imported cars is high and even domestic cars have 10-15 percent road tax added to msrp😫

Given all the Defender's shortcomings, why on earth would anyone ever buy the Range Rover?

As an English chap I'd like to point out that there's a bunch of, rather (read; extremely) dim-witted, phallus-heads over here (as any country I guess) who have sense of entitlement vicariously gained through no personal achievement, so I wouldn't take offense Doug. Just use their comments as you have; the set up for well executed punchlines. The bulk of us Brits know exactly what our cars have historically been; poorly made, unreliable, frustrating but with a quirky esoteric charm and style that can get under your skin, and deep into your pocket. Here's hoping you guys make a new Top Gear/Grand Tour type show and tap you up for a presenting role. No doubt your fans will be championing you for it, I certainly would. Though we hope you keep making your vids in the meantime as they are a proper Craic. Keep them coming chappy :-)

I have a 1971 Land Rover Series 2A (the original Defender). Yup, loud, a bit uncomfortable, no AC and nearly no heat, slow and the canvas top is fastened on with rope but I love it and would not trade it for anything.

Never the less the defender is so cool. It’s been said when we say someone or something has character we are actually referring to the character flaws.

I still like the D90. You can actually work on them. Plus having none of those fancy electronic do-dads is less stuff to break. Just ask Doug about his bumper-to-bumper warranty on his Ranger Rover.

you should compered the Range Rover to the the Defender 110 with the hard top and modern "luxurious seats" option, not the defender 90 for a better comparison. Both of the vehicles are good off road, fuel guzzlers, but the Defender 110 offers sitting for 6 to 8/9 people depending on modifications while the Range Rover can only sit 5 or 4 depending on trim and luxury levels

But you put Diesel in a Defender. Also the defenders need to be 25 years or more, so they are done up and imported hence the price. Also there are other seat options for the defender. In the back.

Police still has some of those Defenders here in Portugal but with rigid top and "normal" rolling down windows. They are awesomely cool to drive but can bit quite a challenge inside the city with tight corners and cars parked on both sides on a one way claustrophobic uphill street.

During the mid 90s, I had a similar dilemma. I walked into the Land Rover dealership, and there was a two years old Range Rover Classic, County edition, fetching 25k. On the same showroom floor, there stood a brand new, white, three door Defender hard top, with the four side facing jump seats in the rear. It's asking price was a whopping 34k! I, having had a previous Range Rover, was thinking more about the creature comforts of the Classic, instead of the bare-bones, harsh riding Defender. For an extra 10k, to boot! I chose the Classic over the Defender. Big mistake! While having reliability issues, I watched the value of my Classic plummet, as the Defenders values never went far from their original asking price when new. I ended up giving the Classic away to my sister.
