Which MG Is Best For You?
It’s been a turbulent few decades for the MG brand. Known and loved by so many in Britain, cars like the Midget captured our attention and hearts! But fast forward a few years, and MG are no longer known for turning out fiery little cars like that. They’re now Chinese owned and are supplying some markets with sensible EVs with good space and excellent range. Who’d have predicted that?!
So today, we’re looking at each of their models in turn, and we’re going to try figure out which is the best one to buy! What we’re going to do is look at each car through a series of categories. We’re also going to focus on the Long Range versions of each model…otherwise we’ll be here all day!
First category up is performance. And this part is good, because you might be surprised! The MG5 is going through a refresh at the moment. It has a 115kW motor that turns out 156PS and 280Nm of torque. So, you’re looking at the 0-62mph sprint in 8.3 seconds, which is marginally slower than the previous generation, but still pretty good.
How does the ZS EV compare? Well, you got a 115kW motor in that also with the same horsepower and torque as the MG5. It has pretty much the same speed 0-62mph at 8.4 seconds.
The MG4 hatchback is the new kid on the block. It has a Rear Wheel Drive 150kW motor with 204PS and 250Nm torque. Even though it is a smaller hatchback, it doesn’t weigh any less than the ZS EV! So your 0-62mph time is only marginally better at 7.9 seconds.
Although the 4, 5 and ZS will likely sell more in general, MG have an ace up their sleeve. Unfortunately it’s not available in the market where I live though. The Marvel R Performance is equipped with All Wheel Drive. 288PS and 665Nm torque make it a very fast SUV, completing the 0-62mph time 4.9 seconds!
A performance version of the MG4 is expected at some stage, but we think it’s a little far out to include it in this video.
Next up, let’s take a look at design and styling. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we can still touch on some points. We do really like the refreshes that MG have made to the ZS and the 5. Both were not exactly the most inspiring of designs. You could argue they’re still not, but we kinda like them. The MG5 cuts that traditional estate, or station wagon, look. It’s pretty much the only all-electric estate in the world if you don’t include the Porsche. You can get some nice alloys on it, and the roof rails give it a little bit of character.
The ZS EV and Marvel R are much more to the current market’s taste. Of course, I’m talking about the SUV form factor. From the side they look almost identical, but at the front and rear, I think the Marvel R looks a little sharper and cleaner.
The MG4 is really stepping up they’re game. The looks are a lot more aggressive, with that pointed and angular nose. The split spoiler at the back and the two-tone bodywork really cut a more sporty image. Inside, it’s a little more refined than the others.
Let’s talk about size and dimensions now. It may not be the most exciting category we’re gonna touch on today, but it could well be the most important in differentiating which MG would be best for you.
The ZS EV packs a good punch for its size, as it’s only 4.3 metres long. That’s in comparison to the MG5 which is 4.5 metres. So do you get much more space inside? Well, the MG5 fairs pretty well here. 464 litres of space, and 578 litres to the roof if you’re not using the parcel shelf. Fold the back seats down and that expands out to a whopping 1,456 litres!
The ZS EV has 448 litres, but only 1,166 if you fold the back seats down. So even though you’re buying the bulkier SUV, that shortened base cuts down on space. The Marvel R is longer at 4.67m but boot space is still only 357 litres, or 1,396 if you fold the seats down. But don’t forget that the standard Marvel R also has a 150 litre frunk.
The MG4 definitely looks the smallest, but thanks to its dedicated EV architecture, it packs a little more in than expected. Boot space is a tidy 363 litres, or 1,177 litres with seats folded down.
If you need to hitch a trailer for a bit of towing, all models are ok for 500kg, or in the case of the Marvel R, 750kg. The AWD would come in handy there also for that extra bit of grip. So if it’s size you’re looking for then the MG5 seems to be the one for you. But that MG4 has a decent amount of space also!

As my family are grown up size is no longer the issue but convenience is. I bought the MG4 Trophy and find that it is a very capable car, in one month we have covered more than 2k miles and on longer journeys, using Ionity chargers, we have achieved charging rates in excess of 140kW. Some things are a little basic but for the price it blows away its rivals.

Just got an MG4 in Trophy trim and absolutely love it. It has been really cold in the last 3 weeks and I still manage to get about 190-200 miles of range and it's fantastic how fast it defrosts, especially since you can do it while you're still in the house using the app. It also feels much faster than expected and it's good fun to drive. Brilliant car at a decent price and doesn't feel cheap at all to me.

I love my MG5 LR, it's a real long haul cruiser. Had it charge at 92.25kw/h, friend had 96, drove it 3500 miles around Europe, 625 in one day, it loves high mountain passes! Huge boot, real spare wheel and very good at 4 miles per kw. It out performs many other EVs at chargers, on the road, speed (can apparently do over 120 mph). Great car which is why Taxi driver love them!

I own a MG ZS EV 2022, or the 440km version Luxury, Norway. If I wanted the same type of car with the same range and practicality I would have to pay £10 000 - 15 000 more. I'm sure the comfort model is just as good, and I think some people have said that already. I have had it for 6 months now and really like it. I feel the build quality is good, and it drives like a charm. The range is cut in cold now with -10C, but it's hard to tell how much because only long trips can tell - but from what I have learned from the car I would say it looses about 20-30% range on long trips in winter time, and maybe 30-50% on short trips around town(I live on a hill side and there my short trips can be energy costly, gas or electric alike. Up and down from 60meters to 0 meters and up again.). I was sceptical to electric, then I got my first second car, a zoe...which became the main car for at time, and then we bought the MG ZS EV. I remember all the lies and scare propganda and believed some of it, and got pretty frustrated when I saw how great the EV really was. The MG brand also have great luxury which you be hard to find more expensive models: Buttons. Real pushy mechanical buttons. One critique, I would like to have more buttons for those function I do have to check the entertainment system for. The MG Pilot is...okay. Not great, but okay.

Hi I have a zs MG, but still await for my MG 4 shipment to arrive here in Scotland! I am a carer/pensioner for my wife, so the EV is ideal for us, as I can charge the car at our house! I fitted an outside electrical point to the outside wall years ago when I had the motor home, now I can use it for charging my MG! The EV is ideal for those who have their own house on the ground level and for those who do not do much millage! We do travel up north once a year and charge the car on rout. I love my MG EV car and would recommend others to purchase one if they do not travel afar!

I have an MG5 Trophy and absolutely love it. Smart looking in Hampstead Grey and outside and inside the quality is exceptional. Did have range drop off on very cold days, making one particular airport trip a problem, before I got used to how to manage that. I eagerly waited for my Orange Trophy MG4, having placed a deposit on the first days of release. When I finally got to see the Trophy "in the flesh" I was massively disappointed at the fit & finish and soft nasty seats. The final nail in the coffin, was the finance package. Dealer was asking £450/mth with a sizable deposit! I cancelled.... my MG4. I am about to look again but at an MG5. But to win my vote, the MG5 finance has to be really competitive.

@@CastleKnight7 Interesting how different people view the same product.... Everyone keeps saying residual values of EV's are better. So logically the finance on pcp or leasing should be better / competitive. It annoys me to see the MG4 finance is so high, yet I have just been offered a £34k EV for just £260/mth on lease. But it isn't an MG. So my feeling is MG as a brand need to improve their finance packages.

Thanks for commenting Mika, and good point about the finance. The sticker price is only one part of the cost! Don't agree about the finish though. Sure, it falls short of the competition in terms of quality, but it should be judged in relation to the price. At that point, relatively speaking of course, we feel it's quite impressive. I drove an MG4 and new MG5 a couple of days ago. The MG4 is sharper to drive and acceleration seems a bit more exciting - it’s fun to drive - though the MG5 is okay and is softer and more comfortable. There was more road noise from the MG4 (a persistent rumble) and I thought the interior was too dark and austere. I like the interior of the MG5 - more attractive and welcoming. I worry about reported quality issues with the MG4.

I was considering an MG4 until I saw one in a showroom the other week. Very dark inside (only black roof lining & interior trim) & not helped by the lack of a sun roof (which is available in other markets but not UK). Rear privacy glass on the Trophy model adds to the gloom in the rear as well. No rear wiper (essential for UK weather IMO) & no rear centre seat head rest, grab handles or rear passenger lighting either. I know it is 0000's cheaper than most others others but these omissions are a step too far for me. I think I will be looking elsewhere for my first EV purchase. Probably a used model as well.

What's it like at -3 on the motorway at 70mph Why do people, keep pushing these, when they're lacking in proper range. I've had the use of a Peugeot E208 & at - 1 or lower, it used up 25kwh that's half the battery pack to give just over 50 miles around town, that's crap. So I ask again, what will MG4 or any car do at motorway speeds .. During winter temperatures??
@bill_heywood
@bill_heywood Жыл бұрын
EV database is your friend if you want to know real world ranges, their cold weather (-10C) 70mph estimate for the MG4 long range is 160 miles. The reason we want to switch to EVs is because they are better technology, they don’t burn fossil fuels, you can charge at home and charge for free if you have solar and they are perfectly practical when the average U.K. car drives just 20 miles per day
@BestElectricVehicle

Unfortunately your question is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string. Any car will use its fuel differently depending on conditions and driving style. Range in an EV will drop off in winter of course, but speed also affects it. Not sure how you managed to use 25kWh over 50 miles in an e208, that's about the most extreme rate of consumption we've ever heard of. Thanks for chipping in Nigel. We'd definitely have the EV versions, but each to their own!

EV's are still overpriced. The MG ZS is £14,500 cheaper with Petrol engine. It is nearly half price. that is about 170,000 miles of free driving.

A petrol engine won't be an option before too long though......

The difference is £12,200 but you are not comparing like with like, the petrol model does not have MG Pilot driver assistance features, it take 2.4 seconds longer to 60 (and you have to change gears yourself) and it has 70 less horsepower. So yes, it is cheaper, but it is also technologically inferior, slow, noisy and has lots of oily bits that will need expensive maintenance as you burn through that expensive petrol

The standard of spec is very different though. If you specced them the same you might get a surprise. Then factor in total cost of ownership. It's not accurate to simply compare a sticker price. But your point about being overpriced is spot on. Considering the cost of the batteries ($/kWh), some brands seem to charging a premium on EVs. Thanks for the comment!
