I blame years and years of bad marketing on people freaking out about chemicals in anything because they created a narrative that untrue to the real world. Especially in the makeup industry, clean beauty is a total scam. It's still had to be turned into something to be useable on the skin. It would be more honest if they did, here is make up but with a few common skin problem related ingredients removed. Everything on planet earth and beyond is a chemical.

I’m firmly convinced that the reason there are so many commercially available margarita mixes has less to do with people liking margaritas, and much more to do with people liking the *idea* of margaritas. They bring to mind all sorts of things that are associated with them (island vacations, beaches, fun, sunbathing, all that Jimmy Buffett stuff). Every margarita mix I’ve ever run into in someone’s home bar is either long expired, or still unopened.

@@AaronMichaelLong Definitely true. My dad only knows how to make 4 drinks, two of which are named after the ingredients: G&T, rum & Coke, martini, Caesar. Does not care at all about chilling the glass or the drink, and "stirs" by gently agitating the drink and ice in a shaker for about 5 seconds. (Yes, we have a mixing glass.) And I suspect he is not even in the bottom 50% in terms of cocktail knowledge.

You know I just want to say that these Yellowstone promotions are probably the absolute best sponsorships on all of KZfaq. Most of the time sponsors just interrupt the flow of the video no matter how hard the creator tries. But the Yellowstone Bourbon add's are so well done that it's just like a mini bonus episode sitting right inside the main episode of how to drink. Kudos to everyone involved.

My favorite is a shaken white russian with heavy whipping cream, russian standard gold, kahlua, an ounce of simple finished in a glass with ice, a bit of whipped cream and cocoa over the peaks. its awesome and your channel helps people make drinks that otherwise we just can't find at most bars in town!

Not a pre-made drink mixes idea but what if you made something like "what if the state of New York was a drink"-type series where you'd go through all the U.S. states with maybe 4 or so drinks per episode. Still hoping for that entry level booze video. I'm just building my bar and I agree with the advice to put the ingredients for the drink I want in there, but I still don't know how to pick which rum, tequila, gin, etc to make that drink good without breaking the bank. All I know is that the "standard" is sometimes "how college students get drunk for cheap" and not actually worth the price or "good."

Much like it's best to start with the ingredients you need for the cocktails you want to make, you should start with the rum/gin/tequila/etc. that you already like. You can always branch out later. If you primarily drink at bars and you're completely new to mixing your own drinks, you can ask the bartender at your usual haunt what they use

Appleton Estate, Plantation, Don Q for various young and aged rums that are affordable. There's also nothing wrong at all with a bottle of Bacardi white. Beefeater or Tanqueray for gin. If I recall in the Margareta Matrix episode you found that certain combinations of tequila and orange liqueur, even quality ones, also created that tire fire, petrochemical, plastic taste as well. Would a different tequila give a radically different result? Greater than just the expect better tequila mix with bad mixer. Or, are they just inherently bad no matter the brand?

Eli Mason has a Blood Orange Margarita mixer, which does move the flavor profile away from the strict margarita. Mixers are, in my opinion, the way for the lazy bartender, you buy the mixer, you buy the one bottle of alcohol. And it's somewhat nice to just shake up a fast one when you finish a hard day of work.

I would love to know the science behind that burning plastic flavour in flavoured mixes/canned cocktails. I wonder if it's a preservative or something in thr citrus juice concentrate. Appropriately enough to it coming from your review of the Tres Agaves mix, it only happened when these folks were stones out of their gourd. Like, flying high as buzzard nuts. And it was not an attempt on their part at a silly voice or accent, they just actually weedmorphed their voices into that accent. Perhaps the originators of the voice were under the same influence.

Couple more notes: when I studied Spanish in college, all of my professors stated unequivocally that there were no silent letters in Spanish. So, according to them at least, Tres Agaves should include the s's. Also, I came up with a reason for canned cocktails: they are for camping. When throwing cans in a cooler is more convenient than bringing several bottles or having proper mixing glasses and whatnot, bring the canned cocktails!

Mixer surveys seem like a sound idea. The impression I'm getting thus far is that DIY is the best approach, but these sorts of mixers are found in any supermarket and people are bound to be curious if any of them are worth picking up.

Maybe a episode on those kits, like global cocktails where you try the mix and then make a proper version. That would be neat.

British novelist Kingsley Amis wrote a book about drinking called On Drink (I think he wrote two more on the subject but that’s the one I remember), and one of his maxims is that a ready-made ingredient shouldn’t be avoided if it’s good. But it does have to be good.

I like to think that Greg reciting vanilla ice lyrics is a form of revenge against a world that has made his drinking hellacious drinks like these necessary. 😅

Our normal (my wife's) go to is Tres Agaves, but she likes a couple of dashes of orange bitters in there. Curious if you think that would make it better?

I was at a beach bar in Cyprus yesterday and ordered a margarita. He filled a pint glass with Ice, then nearly topped it with non-label tequila, threw it in a blender and topped it with LIME CORDIAL! Then, to make it worse, if that's possible, he doused the top with table salt, not rimmed, just straight into the top of the drink. I had a beer next.

When I was in Australia, I was warned that most bartenders there go to class for a weekend. They aren't real bartenders, and they only know how to make the drinks on the menu. Don't ask, just order off the menu or get something in a can/bottle. Unless I know the bartender is a real bartender, I follow this advice wherever I go. It has left me with the ability to laugh at the pain of others on many occasions.

I'd love to see an episode on layered shots. I made one for Cinco de mayo and had to med vodka into the grenadine to get it to flow and simple syrup and tequila to get the layering right because creme de menthe is so sugary

Best key lime pie recipe ever: 9" graham cracker crust, 28oz sweetened condensed milk, 6 egg yolks, 1/2 cup key lime juice (1 cup if using fresh key limes) bake at 300F for 15 min, let sit for 15 min, then chill in fridge.

"Margarita" is the Spanish word for "daisy". The Brandy Daisy was a drink from the 1800s. Other Daisy derivatives include the Sidecar and the Daiquiri.

To what Meredith was saying at the end. When I was a kid/teen, there were these packets, they looked like hot chocolate mix packets but were for Old Fashioneds, Margaritas, Bloody Marys, etc. These were basically for that family member who didn't spend the full $10 on stocking stuffers that they set aside, so they got a dozen of these. I don't think anyone in the history of the world has ever opened a packet of these drink mixes, they just hang out in the packet drawer until spring cleaning when they get tossed. I've always wondered how dogshit these mixes are.
