This video is about my experience getting autographs from MLB Players while growing up. I found that most were very accommodating and would sign.. others were more stuck up.. and some were just plain scary! In this video, I discuss many famous names who I tried to get autographs from as a youngster including Tony Gwynn, Chipper Jones, Randy Johnson, Jamie Moyer, Willie Mays, and many others!

Tony Gwynn was a one of the nicest guys ever to take the field. I took my then 8 year old son to a Padres game in 1984 and we were watching the pregame field warm ups. My son yells to Tony: "Hey Tony can I have the baseball when you are done playing catch". ( He was tossing the ball to Kevin McReynolds.) Tony just looked away and then a couple of seconds later he tosses the ball to my kid. I thanked Tony and he gave me a thumbs up.

I went to over 100 games when Chipper was playing and never once did I see him sign. In the 8-10 years that I was actually trying to get autographs, I got Tommy Glavine, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, Bobby Cox, Andruw Jones, Brian McCann, Brian Jordan, Jair Jurrgens, Kris Medlen, Johnny Venters, Billy Wagner, Craig Kimbrel, Kevin Millwood and Tim Hudson of the notable names. Tim Hudson was probably the coolest guy who played in a Braves jersey during my younger years. During BP he'd just walk around the OF wall having conversations with the fans. He'd talk hunting, baseball, football, or just about anything. I quit trying for autos after I turned about 15. I still always looked to see if Chipper was signing because I would've tried to get his but he never did. I don't hold it against him though. He was a massive star and he'd probably signed so many autographs (not to mention his play on the field) that he probably felt he'd earned the right not to sign anymore. I never saw him ignore anyone or be an asshole though. The greatest autograph story I have is when I saw the Os play the Braves in Cal Ripken Jr's last year. I swear fans lined up almost all the way around the stadium to get Cal's autograph. I swear he probably signed 5,000 autographs. He made his way from the RF dugout all the way to the higher part of the wall (where he couldn't reach anymore), he turned around, went to the other side of the diamond and did the same thing all the way down the LF line, then walked foul-pole to foul-pole in the outfield letting fans throw their stuff down so he could sign. I didn't mention that I ALWAYS go to 3-game series. I live in Tennessee and couldn't go back-and-forth all the time, so we'd just go for a 3-game series a handful of times per year. Cal did this for 3-straight days. He never even warmed up. He just signed during the entire pregame for 3-straight days. Even Braves players were getting his autograph. Oh yeah, he also hit 2HRs in one of those games and almost single-handedly beat ATL 4-1. Great guy.

I grew up a Padres fan in the 90's, and I used to go to Spring Training in Peoria with my Dad every year. Tons of fans would descend on Tony Gwynn as soon as they got a glimpse of him leaving the locker room, finishing batting practice, etc. No matter how many people were huddled around Tony waiting for an autograph, Tony would never leave until each and every one of them had their item signed. Tony was the guy that you wish every pro athlete could be like. He was as down to earth as could be, and despite his greatness, he never thought of himself as above anyone.

A Barry Bonds story: This was one of the funniest things I have ever seen… the Giants were playing in Atlanta. This was either the year he broke the record or the year prior. He’s on the field warming up about 2 hours before first pitch. A kid around 10 years old keeps yelling, “Mr. Bonds, Mr. Bonds, I would like for you to sign my ball please.” This goes on for 30 minutes with Bonds only about 50 feet from us. Finally, this older gentleman behind us hits his breaking point. He taps the kid on the shoulder and says, “Kid, you could be in an alley with only you and him and he wouldn’t sign. You could be dying of cancer and he wouldn’t sign. You could be the last two people on earth and he STILL won’t sign your ball so hush.” The kid has a horrible look on his face, turns back to face the field and starts all over, “Mr. Bonds Mr. Bonds…” The older gentleman and I just shook our heads and walked away. In the hour+ of the kid’s yelling, Bonds never even looked on his direction, much less signed.

I heard kind of the same thing about Willie Mays from a former co-worker. He was at a card show back in the 80's and was in line to get Mays autograph and he heard Mays make some comment about how he was sick of doing autographs that day so Dave just got out of line and said the heck with it.

Love the video, love the Humm Baby Baseball....one of my favorite TTM successes was the legendary Roger Craig this past year, and he was so kind as to inscribe his famous "Humm Baby" on the custom card I created and sent him! True class act! Whitey Herzog was very kind in person, he talked to me for a few minutes at a signing last year, and was not in any hurry, just a very down to earth and friendly man, and one of the all time great managers and Hall of Famers!

I was lucky to get Barry Bonds in 2000 outside the stadium in Milwaukee and he was actually really nice and accommodating. He even posed for a photo with me before getting in a cab. He was my favorite player, so that was a thrill. Your Randy Johnson story sounds familiar. He was like that every time I tried to get him, too. Tony Gwynn accused me of hitting him up "dozens" of times when I finally got him, on a ticket stub of all things, but I am happy I got him in person. Great video man, I am subbing and look forward to hearing more of your experiences

While attending a Yankees/Astros spring training game in 2006 there were a fans who noticed Daryl Strawberry in the section next to us behind home plate. Keeping in mind he was going thru a divorce at the time so none of us expected him to sign, but he couldn’t have been nicer. Keeping a low profile, we decided that one by one we’d go over and ask him to sign in between innings. I had just bought a ball at the team store hoping to get Jeter, which I didn’t think would happen anyway so when it was my turn I got up walked over and politely handed him the ball while saying I was a big fan of the Mets and loved the 86 team. He smiled and then after signing on the sweet spot in black, I said thank you and good luck. Thru all the troubles in his life he’s managed to continue being nice and approachable. I’ll always be a Daryl Strawberry fan!

Randy Johnson was really tough like you said. I tried getting him at the hotel and he always seemed in a bad mood, probably didn't help that I chased him down the street. I saw some segment on him about becoming a photographer and that he liked it because he felt more in control and the spotlight wasn't on him anymore. Probably a big reason why he didn't like signing .

Great video, I have a cool story. I'm a lifelong Cubs fan and unfortunately I'm not old enough to have seen Ernie Banks play. Only highlights. However, Ernie attended a Fergie Jenkins charity night at spring training at hohokam field back in 2009. it was more of an event where you were supposed to just walk around the field and say hi to them and maybe take a picture but no autographs. They were explaining that to us in the beginning and there was about maybe a thousand of us waiting to get out on the field and do that .... And as they were explaining to us, I caught Ernie Banks attention with one of my coffee table books which said 101 reasons to love the Chicago Cubs LOL. He made eye contact with me and I made a motion with my hand as if he would sign it for me. He looked at one of the security guards and said something to him. Then he pointed at me and the security guard came up to me. I thought for sure I was going to get kicked out or something. He took my book and marker and gave it to Ernie and while the guy was talking about not asking for autographs, he signed it to me on the cover and gave it back to me through the security guard period I'll never forget it. What a great guy!!!

I grew up in Scottsdale, AZ during the 60s/70s and had a lot of fun getting autographs during spring training. I saw the post by Ace is a God about Ernie Banks, and agree completely. He was a class act. Friendly, down to earth and approachable. Tommy Harper wasn't openly rude, but did something that wasn't very nice. While walking to the bus after a game he signed for me, and my friend then gave him a baseball. While walking steadily to the bus he seemed to be intently signing the ball, and at the bus entrance hands it back to my friend and climbs on board. We searched the ball afterwards and his signature was nowhere on it...he had faked as if he was signing it! I loved your impression of Willie Mays. I was at a celebrity golf tournament called the AstroJet Golf Classic outside of Phoenix during the 70s. While waiting at the designated area for autographs as the athletes came off the course I heard a kid looking in a distant direction say, "That's Willie Mays!!!" He took off running and I took off after him. Willie was sitting in a golf cart talking to someone and we approached him. He signed for us just like you imitated- totally not into it and no eye contact with us. His autograph is like chicken scratch. Nobody would know it's his signature but me.

I had a pretty cool experience when I was 11 and went to an A's game their first year in Oakland, 1968. I bought a scorecard and tried to get some pregame autographs. The first guy who walked up to sign was Joe DiMaggio, who was an A's coach. The Clipper was probably in his 50's but looked about 80 years old to me, but hey, he was Joe DiMaggio! I knew this was a big thing. He signed very nicely, and pretty largely, on an open spot at the top of the scorecard and then moved on. Suddenly right in front of me was an A's rookie -- Reggie Jackson. Reggie badly wanted to sign my scorecard, which seemed kind of strange. But what he did was sign his name right next to Joe D's. I think even at that point Reggie had such a sense of what a great player he was going to be that he thought his signature belonged right next to one of the greatest players of all time. The next guy to sign was Catfish Hunter! So I had a scorecard with HOF'er Joe DiMaggio, and future HOF'ers Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter all right next to each other. Of course I didn't know at that time how lucky I was, but as the years went by -- and as the A's built their dynasty on the backs of Jackson and Catfish -- it dawned on me that that scorecard I prominently displayed on my desk in my room at home was incredibly special. And then, of course, perhaps inevitably, I had that experience that so many young fans had back in the day before autographs and memorabilia had any real market value. I went off to college when I was 18, so my mom decided that was the perfect opportunity to give my room a thorough cleaning. So she threw out that scorecard, along with the Willie Mays and Willie McCovey autographed baseball I had been lucky enough to get at Candlestick about a year after the scorecard signing, and the Reggie Jackson model bat and Vida Blue glove that I had taken from the A's locker room a few days after they had beaten the Mets in Game 7 of the '73 WS, when I went to a Warriors game with some friends and we had snuck through the tunnel system that led from the basketball arena into the Coliseum's locker rooms. I also had some turf lying on my desk from the Coliseum field that I had torn up after Catfish Hunter had shut out the Orioles to clinch the AL pennant a few weeks before and my friend and I joined the fans who stormed the field. My mom got rid of all of that stuff. Just like that. I remember coming home for the first time from college and walking into my room, and going into shock when I saw that it was all gone and my desk looked it had been fumigated. I asked my mom about it and she just happily said "Well I finally got the chance to clean up that room and I did it!." I didn't have the heart to say anything else. But man, if I had that scorecard and that Mays and McCovey ball now....

I grew up in St. Louis in the 80s and the 90s. My Mom and I used to wait by the visiting team exit because it was easier to meet them than the Cardinals. Anyway, the only bad experiences I had were with Mets. Lol! I asked Kevin McReynolds to sign his card and he said, "Some other time, kid," which didn't make much sense to sense to me because there was never going to be a better time; and John Franco: I said hi Mr. Franco and he literally rolled his eyes at me and kept walking. I remember several then young Astros signed for me, including Steve Finley and Luis Gonzalez, and they were very accommodating and still seeming perhaps a little starstruck to be in the bigs. On the Cardinal side Ozzie Smith was an incredible class act. He not only signed for me but shook my hand! I was beyond excited.

I was a huge autograph collector in Minnesota from' '89-'92. Literally daily, very home game. I was 14 at the time. I have so many stories, I don't know where to begin. Rickey Henderson had a such a reputation as a non-signer, that when he walked out of the Metrodome (going towards the hospital 2 blocks away for some medical thing) all the other auto-collectors didn't even bother, but I followed him for half a block and gently asked, and he signed. When the other collectors saw him signing my card, they all went running. Ha! Bo Jackson said "get the hell out of my way" to me when I asked him getting off the Royals team bus. He was kinda jogging, soI think the team bus was running late. I love Bo, so I never took it too bad.

I already left a long comment but I also remembered that my mom met Andres Torres at 24 hour fitness and she actually had a Torres shirt on and he came up and said he appreciates her wearing the shirt so she got a picture with him and said he was nice. Jake Arrieta actually tried to fight my friend for asking him for an autograph after a game. He popped his chest out and flex his arms for being interrupted while walking with another player who actually did sign an autograph in that encounter. Frank Robinson was another one who would tell white kids he wouldn’t sign for them, but then would sign autographs for all the black kids.

So I actually have a lot of players through the years I have had interactions with especially since I used to live in a city where a lot of Giants players lived in when they played for the Giants. One of those players was Jeff Kent, he lived a few blocks from me so one Halloween when I was probably like 10 we went by his house and he was actually sitting in front of his house with his wife talking to all the kids that came by and giving out candy. He was really nice and I actually dressed up in a Kent jersey so when I asked if he could sign my card he went in the house with the card and did it for me. A lot of people say he is a jerk but he was at least nice from my experience. Another player that lived nearby was Kirk Rueter. Shortly after the 2002 World Series my friend, brother and I went to his house to see if he would be there and there was a limo in front (I think he was getting ready to head home for the offseason) so I got scared and hid behind a bush while my brother and friend knocked on his door. He came out and was the nicest guy and signed autographs for us. Pedro Feliz lived nearby and when I was older and worked at the local grocery store I saw him twice. I was older so didn't feel the need to ask for any autographs but he was nice either way and I helped him get chocolate chips one of the times. I called my mom and told her to bring my youngest brother so they got there while he was still there and he was nice to them and said Hi to my little brother. Another story about Feliz is my brother and his friends where throwing a ball around in the parking lot of that same grocery store and hit a car which ended up being Feliz's car. He was super nice about it. I met Terrell Owens when I was a kid at an autograph signing outside of a Sports Authority and he was cool and joking with everyone while signing autographs. I met Manny Lawson (49ers) in that same Sports Authority parking lot and he signed an autograph for me and was friendly. I met Michael Tucker when I was a kid at my dad's store and he came in and signed an autograph and looked at some merchandise. Not extremely nice or anything but not mean at all either. I was at a game a few years ago and during batting practice Pablo Sandoval was in the outfield doing some rehab with the trainer since he was hurt at the time and I was just standing there so he had two Dasani water bottles and he decided to toss me the one that was full. That was pretty nice considering it was a warm day and that same bottle would have cost me $10 or something at the concession stands.

Of the players i met and got auto's. Chipper was 100% great, Ozzie Smith was 100% great, Mookie was 100% great, To be honest the only two i had trouble with was Griffey Jr at a Braves day game with maybe 500 people in the stands and i was sitting field level Jr would not even look my way. The worst is by far Barry Bonds i paid money at a card show to get his auto. He would sign your card and then bend the corner and say try to sell that on ebay. He did that to anyone with a card. I ate $50 bucks that day because i left it on his table. I was not gonna sell it but i guess he thought i was.
