This is a quick video to help you in selecting the which best paint roller and paint to use on doors trims and cupboards. Make sure to spend a little bit extra money on the roller as this will have a big role to play in the finish. When selecting the paint try use a water based paint as the dry time / second coat is much quicker and easier to use. Put 2 large nails in each end of the door 6" from each corner. Put the nails on the saw horses and paint one side of the door then flip the door over with some help and paint the other side. Won't have to wait twice for the paint to dry.

Very handy to learn about the Nap. The Bunnings chick said that the 10mm will do the job.. Off to Bunnings now to return the recommended gear.

Tip, put your paint tray in a freezer bag before loading it with paint. A little bit of tape to hold it in position and as soon as you have finished peel off the freezer bag - no tray to clean 😀

How do you prep your doors before painting them? Should I use a mild degreaser/ liquid sandpaper like the Klean Strip brand one?

How do you wash your paint brushes? I was always told not to pour paint down the sink because over time it will clog the pipes

Agree with all your comments re water based but oil based enamels are a damn side tougher finish which is everything on door frames

Larger roller will have less chance of lap lines. 👍

First. Thanks man! And nice "Riding with Tom" music too :) Do you use Zinsser first? Why do you not like Foam Rollers? Would you roll window reveals and the face of arcs, or just use your brush? Thank you making these videos

Thanks, I use a primer first which is usually British paints 4in1 primer, sealer, undercoat and stain blocker in one and it’s cheaper than zinsser.the foam rollers are very small and made for small projects and they aren’t as user friendly. Reveal and trim can be done using either brush or roller. If I’m painting a whole house I will get in the right areas with a brush then roll the larger areas much faster 👍

Cheers mate, thank you! I'm thinking of painting over my old kitchen doors, which are just a timber veneer with a clear coat (30 years old) A local painter (friend) said the 200mm black foam rollers leave a good finish on that type of surface But i guess a 5mm nap is same same

either one should be fine. Try it on scrap timber to see if you like the finish first, iv found them to not be as user friendly. they both are cheap to try out either way

Hey Cuz, Great video loved it. It answered a lot of questions I had. Just 1 thing, have you mixed any colours into that Dulux Aqua Enamel? and has it effected it's smoothness or thickness when painted on trims? Does it get runny when colour is added?

Do you mean when tint is added to the paint or adding adding different colored paint to the original paint?

@@billshowto Just tint. Let's say I want to use the aquaenamal to paint trims but I don't want the stock vivid white colour that is in the tin, I want to paint trims in Dulux Caps which is a dark charcoal. Does adding a tint colour effect the smoothness of the end result?

oil will always be more durable than water based

Use Enamel paint. More durable. Enamel comes in oil and water based. Oil sucks to use. Try using water where possible. Water can be cleaned with water. Oil based needs turps of meth spirits to clean brushes and messes. Oil is harder to work with and smelly. Are the rollers good for gloss or semi gloss finishes? Nap needs to be max 5mm. 12mm for walls and ceilings.

I hate the stubble/orange peel texture on walls; if I use the same nap for walls that you use for cabinets and doors, will that help prevent orange peel?

Orange peel comes from the length of the nap. Less nap = smoother finish. But if you use a short nap or a foam roller on a wall you won't get a satisfying result because a wall is rarely flat so in other words you can't really avoid having some degree of orange peel unless you spray it. On the contrary for cabinets and doors I only use foam rollers, and mohair nap is for shutters.

Waterbased enamel is crap. It doesn't have anywhere near the same gloss level :/

You're right it doesn't, but it's not crap it has its merits especially for the workers who cannot use solvent based products on a daily basis or they would get sick.

iHave NoName I was like that, do I got out of the painting game. Now I'm restoring a 50 year old boat and need to paint it. I'm just roughing it out cause that water based stuff won't cut it.
