@William Lee The West Coast offense uses short passing routes as a form of a running game and will put running backs and slot receivers into short pass route patterns, including pick plays to get receivers open. The dink and dunk is very much the West Coast offense.The 2 step, 3 step and 5 step drop were all designed by the great Bill Walsh. The receiver will be in a designated spot, once the QB has completed either of those steps. What people don't seem to understand is that the West Coast offense is designed to draw in the linebackers closer to the line of scrimmage, and to bring the safeties out of deep coverage. It is then that the team will start using stop and go routes to confuse the defense, as well as audible route changes that will allow the receiver to make what appear as another short pass pattern into a long pass pattern that leaves the secondary exposed.
