A seldom discussed euro-nymphing secret is that the rods cast dry flies better than you might think. My 10' 2wt Echo Shadow II casts a DT3F line pretty smoothly.

For big rivers, deep water after big to "huge" salmon and sea trout, I prefere a light, long very stiff two hand rod. The stifness makes it easy to do things with very smal hand movements., which actually can allow you to stand "on top of fish", in low clear water and not spook them for a looong time. And to keep up line speed, to avoid catching to much bushery in the back casts, when that is the only way to (for me) reech the distant spots.

I definitely mostly agree. My favorite streamer rod is a 9’ glass graphite hybrid. It’s kinda heavy but man it’s fun. For me I find I’m more accurate with a 9’6” rod as far as throwing dries where I want them. If you really want to catch a big fish just show up totally unprepared with a 1wt 6’6” rod to chuck 2” trout streamers with guaranteed to catch a trophy size trout. And also leave your net behind that’s a given for the big ones

5 wts are all I use for trout. One 8' 6" 5wt medium action for dry flies & small nymphs on small - mid sized rivers & one stiffer fast action 9' 5 wt wand for chuckin hopper droppers, double nymph rigs & streamers on large rivers. My 7 wt I sling for carp, wipers & bigger bass. Hopefully, I will get to use it on bonefish someday too 😉

I've been using a #7 10ft that I think is fairly stiff (I'm new to this so not sure) wouls I be better with a softer lower weight rod? Will I still get enough distance from the bank? Love your work and this topic was great general information for a large topic and audience. You nailed most of the weight suggestions and left a large option of choices for several applications. Bravo have another beer! Maybe in the future you could even dive deeper into the weight selection with covering the many differences within same weight rods. Years ago I used to teach Flyfishing Nd Flytying and one of the best student feedbacks I consistently received was in how many people didn't understand the dicotomy within the fly rod industry. I used Sage TCR, a Sage SP, a TFO Mangrove ans a Sage SLT travel rod, all 6 wts. To show the choices are even more than just a weight. Take care and avoid the WOKE beers, they will make you cast like a little girl.

🌴 so I just did a comment from when you did a vid along time ago on lines , I bought a 4-5 wt Berkeley cherry wood graphite rod for $12 bucks at a flea market and got a deal on an Okuma 5-6 wt reel , for $ 10 bucks 👍 now the reel already had a new looking fly line w/ backing on it , it was an unknown, what it was ,so I took it out for a test run and the action on the rod was stiff and the line seemed very light with action at all , could I put a heavier line say a 6-7 wt - wt fwd line on this set up to flex the rod to give it the action to cast better 🤔

@davescheer5038
@davescheer5038 Жыл бұрын
@@MichealBacon , you always hear you have to match the rod to the reel and have the same weight line to match, but I’ve found out that things like graphite rods and composite rods can have a stiff action , but the whole reason for buying this 4-5 wt was that it’s going to be fished on the saltwater flats , and having a lower wt rod with some snuff behind it will be needed , it casts really good just did 40-60 ft last week into a 15 mph wind but haven’t fish tested it yet , we got red tide in our area ☹️ tight lines !

A stiff rod is the least you want when fishing streamers. This rods will collapse with heavy full sinking lines. There is a reason for streamer specific rods. @@HugeFlyFisherman I tried stiff rods before. They collapse. With those more parabolic tapers it´s much easier to cast. Just give it a try. It can be a game changer for you.
@FlyFishingChronicles
@FlyFishingChronicles Жыл бұрын
@@tylerk4314 The problem with stiff rods is that only the tip section gets bend but not the stiff backbone. The heavy fast moving full sinking line adds to much weight to the tip. The tip section can not throw the heavy line plus big streamer. A parabolic taper on the other hand can store way more energy.
