After years I have finally decided to put my name on the waitlist for the Explorer 124270 and am currently going down the rabbit hole with the explorer content on your channel 😀 I really feel your enthusiasm for this watch and cannot get enough of it. Thank you for making me not feel alone with my excitement about this underrated watch!

In case anyone is wondering, I’ve owned a 2015 214270 mk1 for about 3 years now and have worn it probably close to 90% of the days since that purchase. It’s an amazing piece of work , of course, but I love it most for its unassuming look and comfortable wear. The polished 3/6/9 is preferable to me, as it gives the watch an extra appearance of depth not evident with the full lume. As the video mentions, the bracelet is phenomenal. There’s a lot written and said about the size of the minute hand, but not only is that not evident unless shown to you, but I think it lends further to the minimalist concept of the Explorer as compared to other Rolex’s. I can understand why some complain that it is an “imperfection,” but in my opinion the thinner hands only furthers the classy but subtle appeal of this Explorer. Again, I couldn’t recommend this model enough for someone looking for a goes-with-everything, everyday watch. Cheers!

A future collectable Explorer Rolex 39mm. Mistakes and references that were only sold for a few years are the Rolex watches that will be worth more money in the future. Keep it, get another one and safe queen your Explorer. I dare give it the nickname "Little hands Explorer" Or the "Trump hands Explorer". You heard it here first by me LOL

Excellent posting and great information. I bought my very first Rolex this past month, a 1997 14270 Explorer. It has tritium lume and I absolutely love it. I would have loved to have a 1016 but they are out of my price range. I am still enamored with Submariners and have started saving for one (talk to me again in a few years). However, when I was deciding on my first Rolex I just couldn't take my eyes off the Explorer 14270. I look at it often and not just because I want to know the time. I bought a leather band for it and have been using that exclusively. I like the original stainless steel bracelet but, at least for now, I think the leather band looks fab. Great, sort-of-vintage first Rolex and one that is staying with me forever! Cool posting and made me even more pleased about my purchase. Bravo to you! Regards, Don from Virginia.

Hi Don, Congrats on your 14270. It's a brilliant first Rolex, well it's a brilliant watch period. Out of my collection, it's the watch that easily gets the most wrist time. I love the Submariner for it's tank like feel, and iconic design. But that's pretty much the opposite to why I love the explorer, it's small, simple and completely under the radar. Glad you like the video. It was one of the more enjoyable ones to make because it forced me to explore the history of the explorer in detail. Thanks for watching Don. Have a great weekend. Adrian

Hi Adrian, just one thing about bracelets construction: yes, the Solid End Links ("SEL") feel more robust and qualitative that non-SEL ones, but there is something to be said about the comfort of the latter. The main point being that, in non-SEL bracelets, the first link is articulated, vs. fixed in the SEL versions. This enables the bracelet to fit more naturally around a wider variety of wrists. I used to own a 16570 from 2001 with SEL, now own the same reference from 1995 with non-SEL, and the watch feels more comfortable on my average 7 inches wrist. Now, granted, it rattles a bit more, but that's the charm of vintage anyway. Best of both world? The bracelet on the Tudor BB36 with a SEL and articulated first link.

Great video. The exp 1 is a great watch. Probably one of the most versatile watches out there. One thing to note: the only literature that I remember shaking the reputation of the exp 1 and the cal. 3000 was the Walts Odets breakdown way back in the day. It wasn't a rubbish review at all (Not some conspiracy hit piece) but he was comparing the utilitarian cal. 3000 to what he normally broke down (Patel Phillipe). His critiques were more about the workmanship than the reliability or function (specifically the workmanship quality to price ratio). He had never cracked open a Rolex before and had only worked on the truly high end of horology. Good read, that review, but best ignored. Buy what's best for you. Cheers!

Good video though you could have more fact checking. First the 14270 came with luminova. 'Swiss' dials like the one in your 14270 picture were U series luminova watches so not all were tritium. Also the 114270 came with cal. 3130, which is still being used in no date subs and Oyster Perpetuals. Sir Edmund Hillary wore a prototype Oyster Perpetual and the Explorer came afterward to commemorate the Everest climb, which he probably used a Smiths. Tenzing Norgay was only the one confirmed to wear his Rolex. Seems very pedantic but if you're recommending people to buy stuff, try to be as accurate as possible. To be fair I only know this because I was hunting for my own Explorer and debating between a 142 and a 1142. Moot point anyway since I got a 116000 in the end. Blue explorer dial with modern Rolex technology and in 36mm! Other that in that pretty professional production. Looking forward to more stuff.

Hi Rohandy, Thanks so much for watching and your comment. I do loads of research before doing the videos - but god knows where I got 3010 as the movement for the 114270 - that's just embarrassing :( For all the sections of the video, I was generalising, which is needed when dealing with Rolexes. Rolex rarely have a clean change in production. So it's safe to say 14270s come with tritium dials, as the vast majority do. The Swiss dials were transitional and I wonder what parts they were using on the inside. The section about Sir Edmund Hillary was simply to put context around watch. I'm aware the story was more Rolex marketing than anything else. But in the interest of keeping the video as short as possible and about the watches, I went along with the Rolex marketing - it's a nice story anyway. Congrats on the 116000, the blue "explorer" dial is awesome, and you get to benefit from the new bracelet and movement. Thanks again for watching.

Hi Ben, thanks so much for the kind support. It's funny you mention the 214270 Mk1 being a future classic. I actually had a section stating a similar thing in the video. About how in 10-15 years we will look back and laugh at the Mk1, because we all thought it was silly with the small hands, but it's exactly the sort of thing that will become a big investment piece in the future. I removed the section from the video, simply because I like to try and keep my videos below 7mins. But I agree, it will eventually become a future classic. And possibly a high value piece.

Great video. I have the 214270 with the short hands and it’s super. I would much prefer this version without the lume in the 3,6,9 hour markers as I think the full white gold is more attractive and I can safely say I have never used my watch at night time. The thing about Rolex is that any of these ‘mistakes’ or ‘quirkes’ like the short hands could become collectible in a few years🤓👍🏻⌚️

Good stuff. Love the 1016 but am also looking for a 14270 because of price. One other rarely mentioned difference between the 14270 and 114270 is that the spring bars in the SELs of the 114270 are very close to the case so it chews up straps. People complain about it in the forums and you can see some chafing in some pictures with leather straps. The hollow end links on the 14270 are far enough from the case so it doesn't have that problem which makes it a more flexible piece. The bracelet is amazing but I think one of the strengths of the Explorer 1 is how good it looks on almost any strap and the 14270 should be a bit better in that regard.
@BarkandJack
@BarkandJack 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Nate, Thanks for watching. I didn't know that about the SELs on the 114270 making the springs bars closer to the case. I find I manage to scuff my leather nato strap on the case of my 14270, but that's because I'm impatient and rush putting the strap on.

If the BEST watchmaker (ROGER W SMITH) in the whole wide world uses one as his daily beater, that action does speak lengths about its quality! Hi, just wanted to share a few more differences between the 14270 and 114270. The 14270 can be found both with and without lug holes, either tritium or superluminova lume, and with the old "push" clasp or the new flip lock clasp. I've seen 14270's with many permutations of these variables, since the switch-over years for these 3 components were all different. (all sometime between 1996 and 2000 I believe). The 114270 can only be found in 1 configuration: no lug holes, superluminova, and flip lock clasp.
@BarkandJack
@BarkandJack 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Conrad, you're absolutely right about the further variants. I tried to make this video short, so it wasn't an exhaustive list of differences. However, I should have mentioned about the lug holes - they can be a deal breaker for some people. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

Nice background (as always). I'll be a philistine for saying this, but with the half life of Tritium burning out, the tool aspect of the more vintage watch will become symbolic, no? Compared to the casual yet dignified glory of the OP, what I'm offered here is more and better (in house blue) lume, ez link, the extra clasp, ... and the layout of the hands/dial. With all that lume, there's a better chance of gauging time safely, on a blizzard night, etc. To me that's the chief benefit: a better tool for emergency situations.

Mate, I am coming late to the party on this one (again), but the Explorer is one of my favorite models by any brand, ever, so I was interested in your take on the various models, which I generally agree with. I got a 214270 (post 2016), as I appreciate the genuine improvement in overall built quality over previous versions. But through the years I have toyed with the idea of a 14270 or 114270, and definitely should have gotten a 1016 ten-twelve years ago when I was given several occasions to acquire one, as I too think that the proportions of the 36mm Explorer are better (and very close to perfect). One thing, though, about tritium patina: all tritium watches are 20+ years old and, in my experience, if a patina has not developed by now, then it's unlikely that it will evolve much in the future. It's very difficult to point out what exactly causes the patina (humidity, absence of light, etc.), but it's generally accepted that it develops while the tritium degrades, as it is not a stable material. After 20 years, most of the degradation would already have have occurred, so by now the patina would more or less have stabilized. Not saying that it can't / won't get a bit deeper in the future, but it probably won't be very noticeable.

I’m thinking of getting a Rolex, problem is which one. I love the explorer, it looks great. Then the Question is which version. I think the newer 39mm is too big, so naturally you would assume that an older 36mm version would be the one to go for. But I can’t stand the stamped clasp, the 39mm has the much nicer clasp. Then a friend suggested I take a look at a 34mm air king- has a white face and black Arabics so sort of the explorer look in reverse. Whilst it is 34mm it feels like a 36mm explorer, and whilst the clasp isn’t as good as the 39mm explorer’s, it is a nice machined clasp rather than a stamped one. Do you think I’m compromising? I think it’s a great looking watch and really like it but some people have told me I should just get a 36mm Explorer because they’re a more known and desirable model....thoughts?

I agree the 1016 is the most beautiful one with best proportions and especially the dial. Sadly, with prices reaching AP 15300 or Patek Aquanaut for the nice ones, it doesn't make much sense for me. The new 214270 is good and I'm contemplating it for a year at least :), but it is not perfect. I like it much better with lume on numerals now, but the square numbers are just not as nice, text and indexes are too big and the bezel may be a bit too thick and shiny.

Adrian, Sorry to pick you up on an old video, especially as you probably know the history better now, but for the YT record: ~ The Explorer didn’t exist in May 1953. It was created ‘in honour’ of the British Everest Expedition’s success. ~ Rolex did supply watches to the Expedition but not to everyone. Hillary either didn’t have one or didn’t wear one. ~ The Rolex watches were an OP variant. ~ Hillary carried his Smiths A409 to the summit. ~ Norgay probably wore his WW2 Sowar. ~ Rolex claimed to have summitted in 1953 but were corrected by Smiths and have never repeated the claim. All subsequent marketing has been carefully worded.

Hey No One, thanks for watching and subscribing. I really like the 369 36mm OP. It's a great little watch. In some ways, I prefer it to the 36mm Explorer 1. The problem is, Explorers are part of the Rolex Sports family, therefore they hold their value better. If you're not worried about the watch holding value, then simply go with the one you prefer - they are rolexes, so either will be amazing. If you are worried about losing value, then don't go for an OP. I hope that helps. A

Adrian, thanks very much for your content on the Rolex Explorer. I’ve been looking to take the plunge on a Rolex for about 4 years now. I bought a Brietling Avenger 2 GMT 3 years ago which I recently sold (with a minimal hit surprisingly). I was originally in the market for a No Date, pre-ceramic Submariner which is my current grail watch. However, I want something that I can wear everyday, for any occasion. I felt that I would “baby” the Sub a bit. So between yourself and the Timeless Watch Channel, I finally ordered a 2019 214270 Mk 2. Such a great looking watch, the beauty is it’s simplicity. Sporty and subtle and the chromalight looks spectacular in low light settings. I think it’s a highly underrated piece but I feel there is definite scope for appreciation in the future. Now if only I could find somewhere to supply a quality leather or rubber strap? Do you know anywhere? 😎 Thanks again, love the channel ☕️

Hi Adrian. I am 37, work infront of a computer, dress smartly/formally (rarely wear a suit or tie though) lead an active lifestyle and I am looking for my first automatic wrist watch. I have decent size wrists so can rock anything from a 36-42 mm(prefer 39). I have been saving so my budget allows me a new Sub Date if i wanted. I am looking for a daily driver that preferably slips under a shirt cuff or does not attract a lot of attention. It should also be wearable with a suit. High water resistance and durability is an advantage. Prefer to buy new (with AD discount if possible) or within manufacturer warranty. Any recommendations???

Hi Bjorn, thanks for your comment. From the sounds of it a black bezel Sub date would be great watch, but it is very noticeable. Nearly everyone recognises a Submariner. You should try on the new 39mm Explorer 1, the New 214270 that I mention in this video. It looks just as cool with jeans and t-shirt as it does with a suit. It would even look good with a tux. If you want to stick with Rolex, then check out the GMT master. You could also have a look at the Omega Speedmaster Pro. At 42 mm, it's too large for me. But they are great watches, very versatile and would easily be in budget. The Speedmaster Pro isn't particularly durable, but there are other variations that you could find.

Bark and Jack Yes please. It will be really useful as i am part of a large demographic. Around 37-40 is when a normal person can afford to make such a high discretionary purchase and also justify its cost at the same time by wearing it to work. Versatility is key because most likely it will be a few years before one could afford the second nice watch. Also there is an emotional attachment with the first watch so it should be able to last a lifetime (and more) and also hold its value(in case the novice watch buyer regrets his purchase). For me personally Speedy is out coz of poor water resistance. I don't want to have to take off my watch if i am on holiday to a beach location and its the only watch i own or carry. The new omega seamaster 300 master co-axial seems good but a tad too thick??

Based on my research, not all 14270 models have Tritium dials, so that is an important distinction if correct. I believe the are only tritium dials if they have the "T" designation. I don't think the "Swiss" or "Swiss Made" dials have tritium, and I'm seeing a lot of watches that have lug holes and are dated pre-1998, but have non tritium service dials.

@ Ian Groves : You're right strictly speaking, but if you ask just for an "Explorer" in a shop, you'll be asked : "Which one ? The 1 or the 2 ?". Idem for the Submariner : "With or without date ?". So ok for the purists, but it's counting how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

Thanks for the informative video! I think I'm going to go with the 114270. However, after a quick search I realized that there are different series of the 114270 (eg: K-Series, Y-Series, etc.) Do you know what's the difference between those? Does it contribute to the price? If given a choice, which series would be a better buy?
@BarkandJack
@BarkandJack 6 жыл бұрын
Hi npt, I'm glad you like the video. The difference I can think of between K and Y could be the lume. Rolex moved from Tritium around 1999 to Luminova in 2000, then they moved to Super Luminova around 2001. Watches with Luminova usually have only "Swiss" at the bottom of the dial, rather than "Swiss Made". Although there was very limited production of these, I've not seen a massive difference in price between these models. It is cool to have something that's different and from a short production, but I wouldn't be too focused on it myself. The 114270 is a brilliant piece. If you wanted to find one that's more desirable, look for the ones made after 2007, they will have ROLEX engraving on the rehaut. It's a cool subtle touch and they were discontinued in 2010.

It looks like there was a 14270 holes case. I've only seen 3 of them online (Instagram, Chrono24, Ebay, KZfaq) haven't seen one from the United States, only Europe, Asia, & Australia. To my surprise, I've seen more Blackout Explorers (very expensive) than the holes case. What series were these holes case Explorers? Were they the first series in 1990? Note: the bracelet clasp for the holes case were the smooth (70's 80's) Date Just clasp for 1990-1991 Explorers (much better IMO). After 1991 - 2010 Rolex used the "faux oyster link" stamped clasp. The non-tritium luminova 14270's came after 1995. There was a non-tritium "Swiss" only dial solid end link 1998-1999, one year only before the release of the 114270.

Hi Edmund, thanks for watching and really glad you’re enjoying the channel. 👍🏻 Unfortunately London prices for watches tend to be quite high, I’m assuming it’s because of the rent for property. But places to check out would be: Burlington Arcade, lovely old “posh” London with lots of vintage watches. But prices are very high. Greys Jewellery Market Only open during the week. Terrible customer service by lots of small watch dealers, but you can haggle and there is lots of choice. Hatton Gardens This is the biggest watch and jewellery district in London, very old and very famous. I don’t think the places have good customer service, but there’s a huge amount of choice and opportunity to haggle. If you just choose one, go here. Otherwise, have a look at Chrono24 and buy if a watch dealer on there that’s based in London. Many don’t have shops, but are safe and can meet you in a coffee shop for the sale. Let me know how you on. 👍🏻

Another cracking video (just found your channel earlier today). Regarding the Everest point - there's no evidence he actually wore his Rolex for the ascent in 1953 and Rolex word their articles very carefully indeed on the topic ('used', 'equipped'). He's thought to have had one in his kit given he was issued one the year previously for a different expedition, so he may have had one there, somewhere, but on his wrist was a Smiths.

Well, thanks a lot for the fab video. I've learned a lot and enjoyed it very much. And Rolex Explorer I in 36mm is really the one, perhaps the only timepiece, that catches me. I love the simplicity and 369 design and of course the size, fitting my 6.1 inches wrist perfectly. I myself will graduate from college here in PRC this year and really fancy a 14270 0r 114270 as the graduate gift. Actually I've found one(ref 14270) in mint position without box or paper at the price about $5222. But because of the tritium, the face was totally patinated and not smooth at all. So I wonder if it is deserved to buy and does this will influence the accuracy of the watch? And due mainly to the almost the same price, I am a little bit confused which ref to choose even after viewing your vid. Hope to hear from your suggestions:)

Hi Adrian, great content as always. Would you say that an Explorer retains its value just as a submariner? And will there be difference in value between the Explorers? I'm interested in a 114270, but value retention is important to me. Cheers!
@BarkandJack
@BarkandJack 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Cedric, that's a great question. Most of value retention is down to how easy sometime is to sell. Everyone wants a submariner so they are really easy to sell. Not everyone wants an Explorer so the answer is no, the Explorer won't retain it's value in the same way as a Sub. But it should retain it's value. I don't think there is any difference in value retention between the 14270 and the 114270. There are arguments for why both are great watches. If you really want to hunt for an Explorer that holds value, or increases, then go for the 114270 with the ROLEXROLEX engraving on the rehaut. This started around 2007. Or if you have a load of cash, then get the Black Out Explorer 14270 from 1991-1992. But they are about 3 times the price of normal Explorers. I hope that helps.

Hi Dan, Welcome to the channel and thanks for subscribing. The Explorer 1 is an awesome choice! Out of all the ADs in London, I've found Watches Of Switzerland to have the best service - but only really at their Regent Street branch. Their Rolex department are so friendly and amazingly helpful. The 214270 isn't particularly hard to find, but it would be worthwhile calling them to reserve one. They held a 114060 for 2 days for me while I thought about it. And they really weren't bothered when I decided to not buy. www.watches-of-switzerland.co.uk/155-regent-street/ The regent street branch is also the largest watch shop in Europe. It's incredible, I've spent many a Saturday just trying watches on and chatting to the staff. They are always up for a good watch natter. Good luck.

Hey Jack Great channel. You have a new subscriber! I’m an airline pilot from Brunei and will be in London tomorrow via Dubai. Hoping to get a nice pre-owned 36mm Explorer from Watchfinder in London. I know they are at a premium and i’ve watched your early videos and your dislike for their prices but trust me, i’ve searched high and low on the countries i travel to and i’m not willing to buy online. They have 2 available , the 14270 and the 114270. Which should i get? Both without box and papers but i need the watch as its under the radar and my working watch, a Rolex GMT Pepsi 16710 sticks out like a sore thumb and i,d rather leave it in my hotel on my travels. Anyways, which would you recommend i get, the 14270 or the 114270? I’m leaning towards the 114270 but the model 14270 they sell is £380 cheaper. It would be sod’s law though if by the time i get there, both are sold!

Hi Amie, thanks so much for your support of the channel. I’m so glad you like it. I’m not really against watch finder, they just cater for a different audience than myself. They offer a great service and are trust worthy if you’re willing to pay the premium. I’m not in the position to do that, so my focus is finding a great price. For someone like yourself, they are a very useful reseller. I’d personally go for the 114270. I have the 14270 and I love the tritium dial, but as a daily watch I’d prefer the solid end links that come on the 114270. Let me know which one you go for. 👍🏻

Bark and Jack Hi Adrian, firstly apologies for thinking your name was Jack. Btw who is Jack and i can only assume Bark is short for Barkley from the signage in the background of your videos. Secondly thanks so much for this video and great advice. Its helped me decide and so i pulled up to watchfinder at Royal Exchange earlier today after my flight and bit the bullet on the 114270. Watch was 13 years young, serviced last year at the Rolex Service Centre so it has an almost 2 year warranty. Incidentally, i also sent in my Pepsi GMT(bought from Watchfinder as well last year) there to be looked at as the 48hr power reserve was not to my satisfaction. Because its under warranty, they will test it and if need be, repair it and ship it back to my country in an insured and secured package, which is convenient. I find Watchfinder expensive but their service is top class. Like you said, i am THAT type of buyer they are looking at. Anyways back to the Explorer I. The watch itself is absolutely stunning and in mint condition. The design is symmetrical, timeless and monochromatic. Although not as big as my Speedy, Pepsi or Black Bay, the proportion and size is just right for my tiny 6” wrists. When i went back to my hotel room, i messed around with some leather straps and nato strap and because of it’s versatility, its such an amazing piece. Although i did scruff the leather straps as the space between lug and case is quite tight. It might have to do with the smaller 36mm casing. What do you think? I now understand the hype and understated class of the Explorer I. It is effin awesome and i am so in love with it. I am sleeping with it tonight. And many other nights for that matter haha. Thanks so much for making these videos. Btw my instagram account is @theflyingwatchman if you care to follow, i don’t post as much and my pictures aren’t that great but they document the watches and mechanical things i own, enjoy or come across. Thank you again and keep on keeping it real with your awesome videos! -Amir
