Which Splitting Axe Option Is Best For You?

We have quite a few options when it comes to splitting axes. Here is a rundown of our most popular.
You know that I'm very supportive of the idea I call "Heat Independence" - which is basically being in control of your heating source.
For me (I live in the frozen north), it's the first step to becoming self-reliant. Especially in this day and age.
For me, splitting axes are a key component when it to becoming heat independent - sure it takes a little bit longer but with the axe I don't have to worry about getting gas or running out of gas. With a few swings and I'm heating.
The axes in the video are some of our most popular splitting axes - I thought a video like this might help you decide which option is best for you!

Thanks for showing the geometry. I'm baffled by how hard it is to find top-down geometry pictures of axes considering how important it is. I'd love to see a comparison between Council's Dayton and Jersey patterns of the same weight.

I can see about doing a comparison of the 4lb Dayton and the 3.5lb jersey. We stopped carrying the 3.5lb dayton

Yes, almost every company doesn't give good reviews or displays of their products. The pictures are incredibly limited & don't give enough info to help you make comfortable choices. Most of the time you can't find these axes in-person in stores....Everything is online now. There's way more choices, but you can't touch & get a feel for products very much anymore. It's frustrating & leaves you just licking your finger & holding it in the air..... These reviews are really helpful. Wranglestar has really done amazing in-depth analysis of so many axes and tools. He has probably done most. He is one of the best reviewers. Buckin Billy Ray -- does decent reviews, but he is more about inspiring & motivating the simple love of axes, chopping, splitting, tree life, & life in general. That man will make you want to split wood the rest of your life.

I'll take a 6lbs maul over any of those. My favorite 5lb splitting axe is a 6lbs maul with about a pound removed from the pole side of it. You cant make it stick which is a big problem with the hardwood I split. The fiskars splitting axe works well too but I dont like the handle. If you made an axe head shaped like it and put it on a nice wood handle you'd have a winner. It has a much steeper/thicker profile than what you're selling.

Great explanation. My five pounder does everything I ask of it, but that six pounder looks mighty appealing. Probably because I don't have one. 🙂

Great video. I bought the 6lb forcible entry with the 32” fawns foot. Little buyer remorse. Wish I had got it with the 36” straight. I have the 5lb with the 36” straight and use it more because of the handle. Both are great splitters. My grandson that splits with me likes using using a 3.5lb double bit, he prefers that.

Well if it makes you feel any better the FE6 axe only comes on curved handles. However you could always re-hang it on a straight handle...

Thanks for that, Brandon! I am just getting into axes, and splitting wood is my primary objective. I don't know if you have any thoughts regarding the pros/cons regarding straight vs curved handle for a splitter? Personal preference?

I’ll swing either but if forced to choose I would pick a straight for splitting

Does the relief on the FE for the halligan cause it to stick more then say the 5lb when splitting?

Great Question. I have not experienced it sticking more because of the reliefs.

@@WhiskeyRiverTradingCo ok, you had to grab one only, ( I know, torture right?) to split with for a month, which are you grabbing, the 5lb or the FE?

I just ordered the FE6, on a 36" handle and a 5lb splitting axe, on a 36" handle, last night. My first order from your site. Do you ever offer Council tool heads on your companies' handles? I've only had 1 Council Tools head not loosen up within the first couple days and it doesn't make much sense buying a complete axe, or maul, to only turn around and buy a handle from you a week later. At the very least, I wish Council would just offer their heads by themselves, for those of us who prefer to hang our own. Then we could buy a head and your handle and not have the wasted expense of buying their handles.

I always add an extra barrel wedge on a new axe, and I've never had a problem after that. It's an extra step that should realistically be unnecessary, but it saves the trouble of fixing a loose head.

@@marvindiamonjr.9631 I guess that's an option. 2 of the axes had aluminum wedges though and the mauls wouldn't have had room. I'll have to remember to try that, if possible next time. Thanks.

Great Question! Council does not give us as dealers an option to buy loose heads. We have tried but they have a policy against it. Thanks for the support and sharing your thoughts!
