I appreciate André's favorable assessment of the Virginia wine industry. Not only is there a lot of favorable terroir (something's got to replace that tobacco!), there are a lot of both old-money and new-money rich people who have the finances to bring in both the right tools and the right brains to grow the grapes and make the wines. It's also been around long enough and is organized enough at the state level to have plenty of local winemakers who can share knowledge about local best practices. 🙂

I've been impressed by how far Texas wineries have come in just the past decade or so. At my last job, I regularly had to attend the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association show and every year, there's more and more good stuff that doesn't have to be qualified with "for a Texas vineyard". I attribute it to a younger generation starting to take over that is more interested in the pursuit of excellence in winemaking than the previous generation which was a lot of vanity projects for retired lawyers and dentists or touristy sidelines for wedding venues.

I live near tomasello winery, they’re extremely popular here. They have an excellent blueberry wine too if you want something a little more fun. South jersey has a vibrant wine industry. Tomasello, Valenzano, and Bellevue are all popular local wines.

I was soooo curious about your thoughts on our Virginia wines. Can’t believe my heart thumped like that. Stop in and see us in Floyd sometime. Chateau Morrisette makes some nice French styles and Villa Appalachia makes nice Italian styles. They make sweet wines too, but no need for that.

I grew up outside of Charlottesville Virginia, where there are a LOT of vineyards and wineries. I remember growing up, I really thought I must live in one of the major wine regions of the world because it was basically impossible to drive anywhere without seeing vines and it seemed like such a well-integrated part of adult social life that you get together with friends and do a wine tasting at one of the several dozen vineyards in my area. It wasn't till I turned 18 and moved away that I began to realize that it's really rare to see any sort of Virginia wine on a list outside of the state, which completely shocked me. I was very curious to see what André would say about Virginia wine and waited patiently through most of the alphabet to see and was very pleasantly surprised! I feel so proud of my state!

I didn’t know that Andre made his wines here in the Willamette Valley. I do know that our grapes are considered awesome. My neighbors next door and across the road have huge vineyards, and my house even came with a little vineyard when I bought it.

So happy you liked the Texas wine. There are some great ones being made (especially in the hill country), though the industry here is still pretty young.

as a North Carolinian I know of excellent wine at say Wente Winery / Biltmore Estate Winery that do Not taste of bubble gum. Worked in a fine dining establishment, Louisiana Purchase Restaurant (French,Cajun, Creole) in the mountains of NC with an executive chef, Mark Rosse, who had a degree in wine and now is a wine consultant to fine dining restaurants eager to improve their wine collection. He took the entire staff to Wente Winery. He also had the only cruvinet wine bar I had ever seen anywhere.

Intriguing that you could almost draw a straight line (or more like a triangle) through most of the states in this round that presented wines Andre enjoyed: Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia are all part of that Upper Mid-Atlantic/Lower New England swathe. Plus Oklahoma-Texas seems to be producing a great mid-country offering. Then, of course, the better known west coast CA/WA/OR.

I'm confused about some of the state selections. There are wineries is some of the states where you had bad wine that are actually very good. Gruet in New Mexico for example.
