The clarity of the HS5 is superior in this demonstration. The KRK's sounded like they were in a box or had a blanket over them. I'm sure with the advanced elements of the KRK that difference can be adjusted out via the back panel adjustment. Thanks for doing the comparison.

That's true, but what we (producers) are looking for is not *better* sound (subjective), but clearer, flatter and honest sound. I don't want my mix to sound great if it isn't. I want it to sound exactly how I see it in the DAW, so I can make my adjustments.

Great video, Edward! Yamaha HS5: definitely sound better in your sound comparison. Excellent mids and clarity. They indeed sound flat and a great choice for more serious music production. Having said that, a possible downside is that these do better in an acoustically treated room. Placing these in an untreated room, those great mids will be bouncing all over the place and may feel overpowering. This may result in listening fatigue after a short while. Hope this makes sense. KRK Rokit 5 G4: Better bass for sure given that larger bass port up front. The mids and highs are definitely there in a very nice way but not as bright/clear as the Yamaha HS5. For some reason, the KRK’s sound a little muddy in your recording, but in my experience, that’s not the case when listening to them live. The overall sound of lows, mids and highs are very well balanced in the KRK’s which will result in a more pleasant listening experience. This will become apparent when sitting in front of your monitors for hours in a normal (untreated) home studio listening to all kinds of music and sounds. In a non-acoustically treated room like the ones most of us live in, this is something to keep in mind. KRK even has an app that listens to your speakers in your own room and the sound waves being produced and bounced to set the digital EQ in the back accordingly. I agree with you that both are EXCELLENT choices of studio monitors. It will just depend on the kind of sound studio you have at home.

I own a pair of Yamahas, the low end is good as long as you have a good room setup. In this test, the port of KRK was blowing air directly in the mic, whereas the Yamaha sends the low-end reflex to the back of the room. So yeah, Yamaha are great speakers, as long as you don’t need high volume. I have the HS7 + their sub and that’s what I recommend

This may help - I've just come back from a writing session for Mairk where KRK 5's were used. When I returned to my studio I noticed my monitors had much more clarity. Same with this comparison. The Yamaha HS5 was way clearer. This can make a big difference in your mixing decisions. My studio has a pair of JBL Control Ones paired with an Edge 900w 12" active sub. I mix by feel on the bottom end. I literally put my hand on the sub to feel the bass.

Good video! I've had the Yamaha HS8s for a long time now and have been more than happy with them. If I was looking for something smaller, I'd definitely take a good look at the HS5s. In the end, get the best monitors that you can and learn them. Listen to a bunch of music on them in your room and notice where the lows are, where the highs are, etc. on music that you think sounds good.

The HS5s have a more open sound but shine mostly in the mid range. The KRKs have more bass response which is desirable for hip hop. What i would do is get the HS5s and throw in a KRK 10" sub-woofer under my desk.

I have both of these monitors and both are very good but with the Yamaha's I can dial in a mix alot better then I can with the KRK's. That being said if you're mainly just listening and want good speakers KRK is the way to go because of the low end. I use the KRK's to check the low end and highs. The yamahas I use to really dial in the mids and low mid freq. Both Speakers are of great quality. If you're mixing music then you prob just want to buy both sets cause you can use the HS5 as your main mixing monitors then you can check your mix in the KRK's.

You should've also compared them to the original track so that we can see which speaker actually translates better and gives off a more true sound. From comparing the speakers alone, it's very obvious the HS5's sound clearer and KRK more "muddy" but with comparing these to the actual track, a lot of times, opinions will change, some may instantly turn heads and say HS5's is missing low end and only the mids are pronounced so of course it would sound clearer and in your face. A Flat Response isn't to just emphasize the treble and sound clear (not saying the HS5's exactly do this), but it's about reproducing an accurate sound, meaning what goes in is also what comes out. So whichever monitor sounds closer to the original track in most of our sound systems, that is the one that is more flat. I do not own either of these monitors but I don't think this comparison will have a true representation of these KRK's or Yamaha's. The rest of the video however was great, thank you as I am still deciding between these two for my first monitors :)

Which did you go with?
@GeorgesonOfficial
@GeorgesonOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
@@amx1000 I went with the HS5s and will probably get HS8S sub later on. So far, I think the HS5 is easy to work with for piano, guitar and vocals, the bass is there, but a little lacking I would say, not by a lot just needs a little more. I also seen somewhere that the HS5s bass sounds “okay” in untreated rooms, but once you treat it well, you hardly hear the bass. I have an untreated room so I went with the HS5s since most people tell me they are better for untreated rooms than the KRK (their bass sounds muddy UNLESS your room is treated decently). I can’t tell how true that is since I’ve never heard KRKs in person, but I just went with HS5s. If my room was acoustically treated, I would’ve went with the KRKs.

I learned how to mix in my KRK 5’s so I’ll sound a bit biased lol but tbh I like the dark tone they have, only bc it helps me hear the mud in a mix easier . If I you can get your mix clean in those KRK’s you’re more likely to have a cleaner mix in any and every monitor. Now I do love the Yamaha HS5’s, I don’t own them but I’ve worked in them. And I will say they aren’t as transparent in the mids to me but they have a great high end that I do love.

I'm not a professional by any means, but i could tell that the Yamaha is the Beyerdynamic DT-1990 Pro of speakers... Absolutely trash, too much treble, unbearable listening experience.... it is also bass anemic... KRK sounded slightly more veiled in the mids, but everything else sounded perfect. I would also have gone with the KRK for those reasons... I think you can use the built-in EQ to boost the mids though, so the KRK sorta comes out on top, methinks. :)

Of course, the mic, and your PC sound processing etc will all affect the relative SQ. Live, the Rokits sound fantastic, so I would imagine the HS5s to be overly bright in my room and setup (PC streaming via a JDS Element DAC)

If your mix is bad, the Yamahas will expose you. The punchiness of the KRK caused me to choose the Yamahas. Treat the room and add a HS8 and if you can't mix on those, you can't mix. The KRKs I found deceptive, like you said, modern, crunchy, even mid-high muddy a little. If you are too harsh on your highs the Yamahas will make yours ears hurt. They really expose that middle and once you master the stereo imaging, watch out. Love em.

I'm more of a home gear guy and car gear guy and love watching the new generation of gear heads go through the learning process. just some thoughts from the other side... The size of the port and the length of the port tube do tune the bass but bigger is not necessarily better it depends on the volume of the enclosure and how low you go before the bass rolls off. the quality of the crossover(tweeter to woofer) and the crossover point(frequency) has a lot to do with clarity and can not be seen or easily measured but I'm gonna give it to Yamaha on this one. The frequency response on both are so flat you should not consider one better than the other and go with you personal sound preferences your room and other gear are gonna mess up your frequency response way more than either of these speakers will.

It is always hard to tell from a listening test on you tube....obviously. BUT, when the music is elctronica that has the cheesy beat box drums and such, it is really difficult. If you want to AB test the monitors you need full range real world instruments for comparisons, with real world vocals, not heavily effected or vocoders. It just makes it even more difficult than it already is on you tube. I know full orchestras for example, are not everyone's cup of tea, but for an AB test of monitors they are fantastic.....you get full range, incredible dynamics and many sounds looking for their space in the frequency range.......just food for thought.

What about the decay time of each frequency band? Isn’t that just as important as the frequency range? I only ask cause I had a conversation with someone who custom builds speakers and monitors for his profession. Yes both monitors sound great but are they a true flat response? I own a pair of rokit 8’s gen 1 and for playback they sound awesome. Clarity, bass, it’s all there. And I know fir a fact Yamaha makes some of the best gear in the industry and their original studio monitors are a audio/mixing engineers goto. I also have a pair of genelecs. ( not comparing or raving those) World of difference, especially in price not that anyone monitor is better than the other if they are not being used right. It’s equally important for acoustical room treatment and placement is key. When I say placement I don’t mean with a tape measure. There are microphones along with software that helps you place your monitors in the size of your room you are working with. I’ve seen studios with average affordable monitors sound truly amazing with the right room treatment and placement. That’s why I ask about the decay time of each monitor. Some manufacturers bass frequencies may take longer to decay for one example. Also usually when you have a driver and a tweeter as opposed to just one speaker you get phase issues which creates a false representation of your work. I am no expert but I have personally spoken to one. And I’ve read some books and there are some really good books out there that you should read before buying monitors so you don’t waste your money not saying that either of these speakers are a waste of money by any means because they are both quality speakers and I like them both very much. It’s just best if we all know a little more about how we perceive sound. Just some food for thought. I learned long way wish I knew a lot sooner. Passing it along for anyone. Thanx. Great video I’d like to add! Cheers

Had a pair of Yamanha HS5, now I own the KRK Rokit 5 g4. No comparison, KRK wins by a mile in every department. A much better studio onitor in my opinion and a better speaker to listen to when not producing. The Yamanhas are pretty unbearable to listen to, really fatinguing and thin. The Rokits are crystal clear and quite full without being muffled at all. I guess that perhaps the Yamanhas are good studio monitors in the sense that if your mix sounds good in them, it will sound good almost everywhere else.

Well, that is the whole point of a studio monitor... they are not made to listen to music for entertainment, and the KRKs are very good for that ironically which is what makes them inferior to the Yamaha as a studio monitor. If have both monitors and I can tell you that you tend to overcompensate the highs on the KRKs and neglect the bass if you are not careful, which kinda says it all on the response curve of the KRKs, this is why to need to listen to a mix on more than one reference and the KRKs are perfect to validate my mixes for general listening.

Good videos and info, but I’m not sure what the sound test is really supposed to achieve… you’re recording audio through a boom, uploaded to KZfaq compression, and then everyone here is listening through their computer speaker or phone. We’re not going to get a good impression of their true sound… it’s like judging a 4K movie ran through a black & white CRT.

I've recently bought a Yamaha MODX7 a few days ago, and since it does not have built-in speakers, I'm planning on buying external speakers/monitors. I like both of these studio monitors, but which monitor is better for playing in front of a few people (e.g. playing at home in front of family/friends with a guitarist and percussionist)? Also, since I don't really do much music production at home, but rather just play on the keyboard itself, is it possible for me to connect either one of the monitors straight to the Yamaha MODX7, without the need of an audio interface? This way I have speakers connected straight to the keyboard and I can play in front of a few people.

As "old school" as the Yamaha's are...they sound way better. Theres a reason why the Yamaha HS series is a studio standard. I have KRKs but I only use them for traveling. My main lab has a pair of HS 8's, a pair of avantone mixcubes and a pair of really old powered closed back bookshelf speakers that have great sounding amps so I disconnected the tweeters and replaced the woofers with HS 5 drivers(incidentally, everyone loves them because they're insanely accurate).

After reading all these comments to try and decide between the two. My question is, can you not add extra bass to the HS5s to get those nice highs and also lows, or are they not capable to produce a nice deep punchy bass? Then my question is, if you added extra bass to the Yamaha HS5s so that they can perform with good bass in par with the KRKs, then would not the bass be overkill when playing them on the KRK5s? If HS5 lack the bass but have the clear highs, and KRK5 have the bass but lack the clear highs, then if you tweaked the highs on the KRK5s they would sound awful on the HS5s, correct? Then if you tweaked the lows on the HS5s they would sound awful on the KRK5s, correct? Sounds like a bit of a paradox and a catch 22 to me. So those who mix on the HS5s would sound appealing to anyone who listens to music on speakers like the HS5s, like attracts like. Same as the KRK5s, those who make music on them and those who have similar speakers would enjoy that listening experience as opposed to the HS5s. So that is the overall understanding I get from this thread and all the comments and opinions. Depends which speakers you have to listen to the music. Those who have speakers like KRK will hear like that, those with HS5 will hear like that. So then it comes down to how many listeners are using speakers like the KRK5s or the HS5? Those who make the music are not making it for the listeners who often use their phone speakers or some shit Bluetooth quality which is an insult to sound engineering, both KRK5s and HS5s. So never mind all that, my question is simply, can the Yamaha HS5s generate enough bass without adding a subwoofer which to me defeats the whole purpose of having monitors if you have ot add subwoofers. Same as the KRK, if I have to play with the equalizer on them, then I may as well just use a mixer to do it. Monitors should not need to be altered, was not that the original purpose of having them, to get straight sound before mixing and editing? I don't mind adding extra bass while mixing, neither do mind adding extra treble while mixing, but if the HS5s are not capable of being able to simulate enough bass, then thats shit to me. Same as the KRKs, if they can't simulate enough clear treble, then thats shit to me. Means I would need maybe one of each or two pairs, and don't know how that would work, well got two ears so guess can just keep turning the head this way that way because each ear is different like each nostril and eye. So please everyone, answer me that, can the HS5s drive enough bass if I want to add more bass? Also can the KRK5s create enough clear treble if I want to hear the highs of instruments? The answer to that will determine which pair I will buy. From this video I liked the HS5s sound, the KRK5 sounds like it has insufficient clarity. But have not heard the bass of HS5 yet, but if they can produce enough bass when needed then I would get them so I get the best of both worlds. ^_^
