A subjective and objective comparison of the differences in the dome, bullet and turret cameras.
This is not a comparison of the video feed quality or of their inner components. We are reviewing their external features and why one type is best suited for a location over another.
We will talk about the pros and cons of each camera type. My preference is the dome cameras as they have a cleaner install and are vandal resistant. I don't like however that they do not install into a junction box. Adjusting the POV of the camera is also a pain once it has been installed.
My biggest pet peeve with the bullet cameras is that spiders and bugs hangout and make webs in front of the lens disrupting my view. The turret cameras also have the same issue but their plastic mount discourages me from installing that type outdoors.
If you have additional pros and cons, please share them below.

My personal advice: The bullet camera is great and *essential* if you place the camera in the open (not under a roof or something). A bullet camera is *much less sensitive* for rain drops and bright sunshine thanks to its large "edge" that covers the camera lens. A dome camera can be totally useless due to bright sunlight or cause false alarm triggers by raindrops that keeps attached on the camera. Be sure to hang a bullet camera high enough against thieves. If possible buy a camera with 940nm IR LED's (100% invisible to humans, great for covert hiding cameras) rather than 850nm IR LED's (red glow is easily visible in darkness from a certain distance). Downside of 940nm IR LED is that it has less power than 850nm. You can solve this by using a floodlight LED lamp with PIR sensor (up to 12-15 meters motion detection). If you are looking for a camera that you want to place under a roof then a dome camera should be the best in my opinion. It's more vandal-proof and has no issues anymore with rain or sunlight as i described before.

May have already been posted but you can in fact lock down the turret camera so that it doesn't move once the POV is set. There is a tiny screw that pushed down a metal tab which secures the turret in place. The screw is covered/protected by the plastic trim ring.

Adrian the hikvision like the one he is demonstrating doesn't have that screw to lock it down but others like annke do. I was disappointed when i upgraded to higher resolution Hikvision cameras to discover cheap plastic housing and no locking screw. Good clarity though lol.

there are other factors needing consideration too,,, I'm personally moving away from domes and am now using turrets and other style cams using EXIR IR LEDs, such as the Hikvision line. I have found quality and distance of night time video significantly better. Also the domes (at least the ones I had) can get IR light refections off the plastic dome affecting video quality.

An added tidbit: The junction boxes that you can buy for the cameras aren't big enough in diameter to allow you to put the water-tight network connection in them w/o seriously bending the network cable. I bought junction boxes for all my cameras but didn't use them because I didn't want to risk breaking the cables by forcing them into the boxes.

Thank you so much for all your hard work on your videos! Seriously, I watched every one of your videos at least four times before I purchased a Hikvision security system. I purchased an eight-camera NVR with two bullet, two turret, two dome and one mini-PTZ cameras. I think that the turret camera have a better image and it seems like the turrets have a good FPS rate. The bullet cameras seem to be a bit less clear (although still a good picture). The mini-PTZ is way-cool and has a good wide viewing angle. You're right about bugs and the bullet camera! I had spiders start building webs the first night. I am paranoid so I turned of uPnP on the NVR and my router. I set up VPN access on my internet-facing router and installed OpenVPN on my smartphone. Now I don't have to worry about my system getting hacked and I don't have anything exposed to the Internet other than the VPN.

We've moved away from domes, cleaning them is terrible. Especially in a coastal area. The humidity +salt makes them messy. Saying turrets are not able to be tightened is miss leading. There is a set clamp under the beauty ring. Turrets also have a better ir range over domes. Domes are good for low areas outside and interior applications. Turrets are made to be up and out of the way. Bullets generally have the farthest and narrowest fov. You should make an addendum to this video.

Same here. I used to whine when spiders were hanging around dome cameras, and in squashing them I made a mess. But I now learned the tricks of trade. I use reading glasses cleaning solution and a soft glasses cleaning cloth. Spray on the cloth and gently wipe around the dome. Repeat by rinsing the cloth in purified water and then wipe away with a soft, lint free tissue. Best advice is to wear rubber kitchen gloves when cleaning domes, as oil or natural grease from your hands break away and smears the cloth. So, wear the gloves and wash them while they're on. Then proceed with washing the cloth under warm water and dish liquid, then rinse well until no foamy water is noticed. I use gloves when handling this delicate piece of technology. Read on... Dome camera are subjected to rain drops, fog, grit, etc., and dust sets on it on windy days. At least it is much better that these natural elements settle on the dome than on the camera lenses which is harder to clean. Domes are usually made from toughened glass, even so they should still be cleaned with utmost care. The inner of the dome should be similar to a Halogen bulb, no smear, dirt, lint, fingerprints, streaks, etc., should be left inside the dome. Cleaning of the dome inner inner part is the same as the outer but the glass should never be touched. Once you know that you have cleaned to its best, raise the dome towards a bright light and inspect it for lint and smear, etc. If it is perfectly clean, place it on a paper sheet gently to stop any mini air disturbances that lifts any dust not seen with the naked eye. Then the camera lens itself also need to be inspected for any dust particles or tiny lint that may have adhered on the lenses. If it is clean process with reinstalling the dome. If not, but the lens is clean, just blow away any dust around the camera until clean. Next, reinstall the dome the smart way. Turn the camera so it faces downward and slowly lift the dome from the paper, slowly so that no suction draft will be created by lifting it really slowly for the first 2 inches but don't turn it over like a cup yet. Turn it when the dome is next to the camera, then turn it over and join it with the camera, then holding the dome against the housing put the screws in and tighten, yes, tighten but not in a round fashion, more like a criss-crossing star fashion, a bit at a time till they are all reasonable tight. This fashion is effective in tightening the dome to the housing without having to overtightening the screws and stress the dome round frame. Then clean the dome of fingerprints, etc., with the solution I mentioned above. I've done this for a number of years without any problems. Also camera IR illumination attract insects at night, especially in summer where big fat moths are recognized by the camera as giant monsters in flight as they approach the IR lights, then... alert, alert, the alarm gives false signals. Instead, switch the IR lights on the camera off and use a separate IR spotlight with a wide spread beam (sold separately). Insects then will fly to that light and stop annoying the camera. No more false alarm. Cheers.

As someone who is in the know about vandal culture there is no such thing as vandal proof cameras. They can easily cover it with duck tape,spray paint or whatever they have. Ya have cameras on the roof and ya think those R safe??? Think again the vandals can climb up the building or use a drone with a attachment on it to cover them. Vandals R constantly adapting and planning behind the scenes.

Hikvision domes have a terrible problem with night vision. You must mount a dome on a roof or soffit so that it hangs vertically or you will have infrared reflection all the time. Cleaning the domes doesn't seem to help much. I have used domes from other manufacturers and this problem is a little lessened but it is still there. Turrets and Bullets seem to give the best night vision. Bullets are bulky and easily grabbed onto, the bullets he is using in the video are of the value style series. Most bullets are a lot tougher to adjust but still not overly vandal resistant. It is true that turrets can be adjusted easier, there is a set screw under the cuff you can tighten up to reduce its ability to move, it doesn't always want to tighten down very well though. Typically in my experience it doesn't much matter because cameras are often mounted out of reach making it difficult to reach up and simply turn them. My preferences for the different types are as follows; Bullet cameras in commercial and industrial settings, they are easily visible to would be trespassers and a large deterrent. They must be mounted securely due to vibrations from wind. Turret cameras in most outdoor settings provided the camera is out of reach or in low foot traffic areas (like a yard gate). Dome Cameras are best for indoor use or outdoors when sheltered or in scenarios where you need maximum vandal resistant properties. Only hang them vertically, use a goose neck mount if necessary. Note that most gambling associations want to see domes used to watch VLT machines.

This video was so helpful as I am trying to figure out which cameras are best for my home. I like the dome cameras but.. 2 things, what is and why do you need a junction box hook up and my home has no soffits to put this type of camera up. Does the doem have to be installed underneath a soffit or could it be installed directly on the face of the house?

hmmm I planned on changing a couple domes to turrets on the outside because I hear they put out less heat and the bugs will not hang out on them as much, currently a couple of my cameras attract bugs and the outer lens gets messed up from them walking around on it and whatever they are doing.... during the day the view is nice, but at night after a few weeks the bugs create a film, like they are spraying on the lens or something, so only my night time views are messed up, daytime you can't tell the dome is dirty. The camera install is not going well because the camera I purchased will not work with my old NVR, probably too high resolution, but setting it lower in the main settings has not helped either. anyhow, compatibility is not the issue, bugs on the lens is. Bugs rarely mess up my bullets I have out there... well they do, but not actually on the lens, just everywhere else, so they don't require as much cleaning. Have you actually tested the turret camera outside and found that the bugs and spiders will hang out in the lens, or do you just think they will?

I have Hikvision domes DS-2CD6D54FWD-IZHS Panovu, DS-2CD5546G0, and turret DS-2DE7530IW-AE. The Panovu has 4 cameras which gives me 360. The 5546 covers a spot the Panovu couldn't get and the 6D54 looks out over a lake. The zoom on it is incredible and I can watch eagles fish and eat their catch from 500 yards away. Any kind of embedded IR is going to be just okay as it's focus is limited to the diameter of the camera chassis. It might spread with distance but then of course with distance you get diffusion. I supplment with IR "lights". My house has a nice overhang on all sides so I mount my cameras under the soffet. This also protects them from direct rain and sun. I buy all my camera equipment from an authorized dealer, B&H Photo.

Hrozno Zelene turret cams can be mounted flat on a wall or fascia. Installed 3 this way at my parents place, not one issue or even a single spiderweb in 6 months. (Hikvision 4mp EXIR) My 3 hikvision bullets always attract spiders because of the sunshade as mentioned in the video. Stupid thing about bullets is you only want to install them where they can't be tampered with meaning you need a ladder every time a spider moves in! None of my 4 turrets or single dome have spider issues.

This problem has been solved on the new generation of hikvision domes. they use a foam gasket that pushes hard against the acrylic dome thus preventing any form of IR reflections. One disadvantage not stated is that if the dome gets scratched, at night the IR light can cause blurring or light streaks on the image. At the end of the video you summarise by saying basically domes for outdoors and turrets for indoors. However, your house has a lot of porch overhangs outside where the domes are, therefore, ideal. My house, on the other hand in the UK, mainly just has vertical walls and my understanding is that the domes are not ideal as they don't have enough axis of movement for that situation. Anyway, thanks for these videos - I just bought a Hikvision Hiwatch NVR and 3 cameras to get started.

@@HomeTechDIY To test it I tried this on the POE camera and set it from Reolink Software to 25fps. I set in BI video settings May#x rate to 25fps. To aid there being wifi issues I plugged a laptop running the BI demo same settings and frame rates are 14fps,this was a test in the evening. At night they drop to 12fps. My resolution is only at 2304*1296 which is two down from full res. Bitrate is set to encode at 3072 mbps. Just trying this once again but during the day I got good fps all day solid 25fps, then as evening comes in the fps drop from 25fps to 14fps, and now in full darkness its back to 12fps on both reolink camera. At 12fps is better than what happens most evenings as the wifi camera can drop down to 3fps. The poe camera still stay at around 12fps although set to 25fps. Speed tests for the internet are still very good at 67mbps down, 17mbps up.

Consumer 4k cameras have terrible low light performance.The larger the physical pixels on the sensor, the better the low light performance. If you keep the same sensor size but add pixels, the pixels get smaller. If you instead keep the pixel size the same but increase sensor size, you get an $$$ expensive $$$ camera. I use BlueIris.... it's ok, but not awesome. A junction box is a hard plastic or metal box for protecting wire connections from the weather. The are where endpoints of wires (electrical, internet, cable, telephone, etc) are stored and kept safe until they are ready to be connected to a device.

It really depends on what you needs are (besides 16 channels and 5mp). Are you looking for a kit-type solution or something more custom? How far will the NVR be from each camera? Do you have a camera style(s) or type(s) in mind? Do you need night vision and if so, how dark does it get and how far is your scene from the camera? Are you looking for PTZ cameras or any zoom devices? Do you have access to the wiring areas (inside the wall/ceiling)? What is your budget? Will these cameras be inside or out? Is this for a business or residential? How much footage are you wanting to store?

I have to ask a question... why don't these surveillance cameras have a plug-in adapter/connection for the wiring to connect to the unit? This would allow the user to drill a much smaller hole into their home, providing the end adapter which would connect to the unit was smaller. With the way these units are made now, you need to drill such a large hole in your home in order to pass the wires through, because of the large size ends/connectors.
@HomeTechDIY
@HomeTechDIY 5 жыл бұрын
When a property is being built and there are plans for security cameras, the electrician would rough in the network cables and have them tucked away in an in-wall junction box. The male RJ45 connection is then added to the wire. When it comes time to install the camera, the bulky connector will live in the junction box. If installing cameras after the property is complete, the in-wall box cannot be easily installed. An outside junction box can be used or a camera mounting box to hold the bulky connection, and the hole in the building would only need to be drilled for the size of the network cable. But sometimes the easier solution is to drill the large hole and pass it though the hole so the install looks cleaner and there is no extra costs for boxes or mounts. Agreed, it's a large hole.
@sumatrachick2456

Why would you need a connection piece to add to a junction box you can drill a hole in the middle and attach the camera very easily with all connections safely inside . How did you not notice this ?
@HomeTechDIY
@HomeTechDIY 5 жыл бұрын
I was referring to the incompatibility of attaching the camera to a cover of a metallic inset junction box. A lot of my drops terminate in a standard in-wall octagonal box and the mounting screw configuration of a camera unfortunately does not align with the threaded holes in the junction box. One would require a weather-sealed 4” box cover to protect the wires within the box but the camera’s larger radius does not permit access to the junction box’s screw holes once the camera is fastened to a drilled box cover. Same applies for the external 4” PVC junction box given the cameras in my demonstration. Using an adapter or a non-standard junction box would lead to additional costs.

Well the main truth is they were an OEM of Hikvision. If you look at the NVR or DVR from any of the many others that re brand their systems they all look the same. Only difference is they have their name on the system, and if you need Support you would have to contact Hiwatch. However in a time not so long ago. They became a Dahua Reseller and seems all the products they sold under the Hik brand are no longer for sale. Part of the deal as most have to be on Contract as only sales of their products.

You were a bit to dismissive of the bullet camera. It can be fixed vertically or horizontally and is the easiest to adjust, especially after fixing, when it is highly likely that you will need to change its position, possibly using a ladder. It is difficult to vandalise without the vandal getting filmed in the process. A vandal would need to be ten feet tall to grab mine. My own spiders are much too industrious to waste their energy on a lil 'ol camera.

What's a junction box and why must you spend more for it? I just looked at two installed cameras right now at work. Dome camera on a pole (parking lot) and a bullet on a wall (lobby entrance). There were no 'boxes' attached.
@HomeTechDIY
@HomeTechDIY 4 жыл бұрын
It's a tidy place to keep your wires protected from the elements where they join. If the box has a cover, the camera can attach to it and the wires would feed through the cover and into the junction box for protection. It also eliminates the risk of having them get lost inside an eave, ceiling space or behind a wall. Some builders will terminate CAT6 cables inside a junction box for camera installs at a later date. Here is an example of a basic one: amzn.to/2Nq9eFQ

Hi, thanks for all your videos! I have some questions though:- 1) Does the dome and turret need junction boxes? or they can be installed right on the eaves? 2) I think it's good if you can share with us where and how you position your different cameras? I am building a house now but it really stresses me on where I should place my cameras outside and inside. I need to tell the builder to pre-wire before they do the gyprock/drywall soon and I am not sure yet on where I should place the cameras. :( 3) I read on some forum that it's good to terminate the wires from the poe switches in the house on a wall plate with sockets in the roof cavity then use patch cables to connect the cameras to the sockets of the wall plates. What do you think about this approach? I thought it's much easier for my builder to run the wires and then leave it in the roof. Then when I am ready, I just drill a hole in the eaves, find the cable and then plug it straight to the camera.
@HomeTechDIY
@HomeTechDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the great questions. 1) No junction box is needed and you can install them right on the eaves. I like to use junction boxes if I can to give myself some space to store the excess cables and to keep the connection is a "safe" area. 2) Without seeing you plans, it would be hard to give solid advice, but I would recommend 2 outside drops on each corner of the mainfloor. If you mount them on the eave of the second floor, you are less likely to capture faces. Also, avoid capturing the sky, especially direct (or even near direct) sun. I also try to get a camera pointed on each outside door and then another camera over the door to get any one approaching. For inside, maybe a ceiling drop for a baby cam, mud room to keep an eye on pet food bowls and in the utility room to watch for boiler leaks. I have a wall plate drop in every room for whatever comes up in the future. 3) I would say to run the wires and leave them without wall plates. I try to avoid breaks in the line where possible. Hope this helps.

newfiebort omg you are a champion. for no.2, you mention wall plate drops, is it wall plate on the wall or inside the roof cavity for future use? also, for no. 3, whar do you mean by breaks? I forgot to ask, I am trying to get some flood lights with movement detector on the eaves, the thing is the best position for them will on the same spot as the cameras and I dont think I can place them higher than the cameras as the cameras are already on the eaves. any ideas on where are the other positions to put the flood lights?
@HomeTechDIY
@HomeTechDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Hey, glad to help! For the wall plate, I mean like on the wall... like an electrical outlet. For breaks, I mean having the line terminated with a female connection in the roof area. I'd just run a line with 2 male ends; one in the PoE switch and 1 in the camera. For your lights, I have something similar where I installed lights centered over a garage door. Look at my video for installing motion LED floodlights on my shed... I now have cameras under the eaves of that shed... maybe that will help. Maybe you'll have to find a different style of light... that's a tough one.

@HomeTechDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Check out the operating temperature of the camera before buying. This might not prevent it from fogging up however. I had a dome in the hot sun for a couple years and the glass turned a little yellow, so be aware of that too. Normally, cameras have silica inside to help stop fogging but at extreme temperatures, this isn't perfect. I would lean towards a turret style camera or bullet as there is less glass for a greenhouse effect. Maybe try just a single camera first to ensure it performs ok. Also, if possible, see if neighbors are using cameras and if they have had issues.

The best security system you can buy is the one you have total control over........ that means you decide whether you want to put a password in or not. whether you want to connect it to the Internet or not....... and you don't need a third party's permission to enter the menu ........ because it belongs to you........ you brought it out of your money so you decide everything......... but apparently modern security systems are not working like that you hand over your money then they hold you to ransom and refuse to give you the key to enter the menu unless you give them personal details.............. It would be the equivalent of buying a car have it delivered and not been able to drive it because they refused to give you the key until you give them personal details............. I don't think car drivers would be very happy if they paid all that money out for a car but can't drive it because they need permission of the seller.............. but that's what the Security companies are doing........... and apparently millions of people are accepting iit......... it just shows you how many dumb stupid brainwashed people there are out there................. your security system should be a stand-alone system controlled totally by you the buyer......... the only time you should need to contact the seller is if you have a problem with your system under the guarantee..

If you buy any cameras, buy directly from the dealer or amazon, at least with amazon ya have a good return policy, with ebay, I would use paypal to get a refund if they screw me over, but I prefer to go direct or amazon.

Hikvision company policy is they do not like dealing with the end user. You have to buy from one of their preferred distributors/installers. The 3 year warranty that Hikvision offer is not valid unless you purchase through one of their preferred distributors.
