3:55 Bam Bam Bigelow is a legend, widely considered one of the greatest big men in wrestling history, and he (together with Luna Vachon) was featured heavily on Raw at the time of the game's release. As for the 1-2-3 Kid and Doink, they were hugely popular at the time. When 1-2-3 Kid won against Razor Ramon it helped kick start one of the hottest angles of the early to mid 90s American wrestling: Razor's face turn (and taking the Kid under his wing and teaming up with him) and his feud with Shawn Michaels. The Kid starting off as a jobber and getting a win over Razor, arguably the biggest heel in the company at that time, did a great job of establishing Monday Night Raw itself as a must-see show for wrestling fans because it was broadcast live and it gave the impression quite literally anything could happen there: a jobber who looked like a 16 year old might just score a win over an established main eventer. Now babyface Doink was a bad idea, that's gotten even worse with age, but there's no question he got a huge pop whenever he showed up in 1994, so I understand why they made him part of the game's roster. I'd say this is a pretty good representation of their most popular active wrestlers at the time. Sure, Jake the Snake and Ric Flair rank way higher as all-time greats than Doink or the 1-2-3 Kid ever will, but they weren't in the WWF anymore when this game came out. 🤷‍♂️

A lot of people still don't know rhat 123 Kid is Sixx / X Pac who later went on to way more success than Flair or Jake in the WWF. But those same folks likely also don't know that Flair and Jake were already over years before going to WWF either

Bam Bam Bigelow was awesome- not only one of the best big man wrestlers, but a genuine hero, who once saved three kids from a burning building in his street, suffering 2nd degree burns to 40% of his body. The flame tattoos on his head weren't just for show.

I loved slam masters. Everything you could want in a wrestling game then. Solid moves. Intuitive controls. Colour ,sound all hyped up. Loud audience. It felt like a wrestling game should feel. Something you'd not see again until the N64 WCW/Nwo games and Wrestlemania 2000/No Mercy.

As for the roster change from Royal Rumble to Raw. Ric Flair, Randy Savage and Mr Perfect had all switched to WCW at that time. Bam Bam Bigelow, 123 kid and Doink were some of the most featured characters on the roster. At the time WWE only had a small roster of maybe 20 singles guys so this was probably the top 12 singles guys in the company at the time.

@@tempestfennac9687 By the time Raw on SNES showed up they were beginning to feature women's matches again, most notably Alundra Blayze. Royal Rumble was my favorite WWF game on SNES as well. However, you scoffed at Doink the clown as most people do but his heel run when he first debuted was awesome! As a matter of fact, he was getting over so well as a heel that people were starting to cheer him. Because it was before the attitude era they felt the need to turn him babyface and it killed the gimmick. Also, Matt Borne (original Doink) was fired around this time so the character was never going to be the same even if they turned him back heel.

First tuning in the late 80s (mostly WWF, a little NWA/WCW), tuning out by the early 90s (after Hogan and Warrior left), checking into WCW in the mid 90s when Hogan and Savage joined, hating the Attitude Era, tuning back in the the late 90s for the Monday Night Wars (pretty much WCW-only), then back out again when WCW went under.

I was really hoping that you'd cover _Funaki Masakatsu Hybrid Wrestler: Tougi Denshou,_ as it really is a fantastic gem of a game. Each wrestler has a diverse moveset, there are some wild match types that are unlike anything else in any wrestling game, and there's even a CAW mode that involves learning moves, getting married and fostering a prodigy, and having to retire because you start losing stats and moves due to the ravages of time. It isn't as complex as the _Fire Pro Wrestling_ games, but it is a damn good alternative. It also has an English patch available, which makes it more accessible than most games from Japan... although an instruction manual for some things would still be nice.

Super Fire Pro Wrestling series is Human Entertainment venture, always seem to find my way to them either pre, prime or post defunct. Also Goichi Suda aka Suda51 directorial début was with Super Fire Pro Wrestling 3 Final Bout, and also did directing & scenario writing for Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special. People now know him as the rather wacky director behind Killer7, No More Heroes, and many other games with his studio Grasshopper Manufacture. Me and my best friend used to have a blast playing Royal Rumble way back in the early 90's. After an hour or two of kicking each other's asses, our fingers eventually got tired from all the mashing. At that point, we'd up the difficulty to max, pick our least favorite character, intentionally get thrown out of the Royal Rumble, and then spend the next 20 minutes watching the computer duke it out and rooting for our favorites. In April, I bought him a CIB copy and put it in a protective case to give him. He doesn't own a SNES, but that game is on display in his house.

We had a small video store in my town with limited games... 1 that was always rented was royal rumble... I alone rented it like 10 times. But that Saturday night slam masters game was in the store and always sat unrented... For whatever reason it was always there and you had played every other game but nobody wanted to ever rent slammasters and nobody had played it. That's why I clicked when I seen it... I spent so much time looking at the cover but never rented it

If you like brawling in the last game, it's even better here because this game has a BUCKET. LOLOL I died.

Nice reviews, though I think it'd have been best if you kept the wrestling opinion piece down to "I was really into it in the early 90s, so I have experience with a lot of these games" :P

The bucket was used by the tag team The Godwinns as a weapon.

I have Royal Rumble but wasn't aware there was a follow up game... featuring a freaking bucket!! Mother of god, I laughed so loud during the gameplay shown here. As if beating/knocking out the referee wasn't awesome enough.

I used to play an arcade game called "Wrestle War." I don't know if it was ever released as a home-port for any console during the SNES/Genesis era but, it was a damn good game. The wrestlers were all based on real-life wrestlers only with crazy ass names. I think it might've been released on the "Neo-Geo" console.

The presentation of WWF Raw was by far the best of any wrestling game on SNES. Though the controls and speed of the game were a lil' slow. Still tons of fun!
