Hi Dan, just bought my first sled, 2022 Yamaha Mountain Max 800 in 154 2.6, excited for my first ride this winter here in northern Alberta Canada. Rode a couple old junker sleds in the past and ride a sport touring motorcycle in the summer months. Feel this sled will be a good compromise for some trail and some mountain as well.

If ridden since late 90's and I have 155 2.6 turbo and a 163 3" , the 163 is an 850 but wow what an amazing track. Last year I was on 163 2.6 and like you said if it was one track that would be it. But I will say I am falling in love with the 3" it's very impressive. These sleds have gotten good, hop back on a 01' 151. We have it way to good these days. Dare I say that you can buy your way into this sport.

I also agree with the 163 x2.6 track . I have a question regarding the snow build up in the belt drive . Just recently we were at Grizzly Lodge in epic snow conditions deep powder and cold weather. Had a slight problem with snow getting into the drive belt area and freezing up , lucky for me I did not have electric start so it was easy to get the snow out. But not so good for another guy had electric start the battery was mounted directly I front of the belt drive Making it difficult to remove the snow . Any thoughts or experience from yourself in this situation

Yes it all comes down to rider/conditions/style. Over here in Teton Valley almost everybody is going 163/5 and three inch lug. Currently on an 18 Axys with 155-3"... But thinking next year's 850 snowcheck should be a 163. Still trying to decide on 2.6 vs 3 though......

Bear in mind the information in this video is specific to Polaris machine, since we rarely ride other brands we don't have opinions on those tracks. In our opinion the 2.6 works better in most conditions than the 3.0.

not sure how long your son has been riding, but either of those are likely to be way to much power if he's a beginner, not bashing and obviously I don't anything about the situation, but the 650 would be playful and hold its own without being too much power to control. Just my input as someone who started riding at 5 on a 340 and worked my way up in power so I was comfortable controlling a sled with good technique not just relying on power and speed.

So far one of the best tracks Ive had was the 2.5 power claw on my 08 mtx nytro, ya it was heavy but it would LAUNCH the sled out of the trenches and keep it on top.

I love riding the 155 2.5, simply because I’m 14, and very small, 5.3 110lbs. Riding the 163 never mind the 174 is just to long of a sled to pull around. Rinding the 174 I felt like a was riding a bus. But that’s just my opinion:).

You're 17 now Teagan DuBois. Taller, stronger, ....and wiser? ;-) Would you want a longer track now? I expect to be getting back into snowmobiling after years away, so I'm rusty on my skills. Physically I'm 6'7", 240 lbs, and 62 years old. I'm thinking a 163" track to hold my weight ....and temper the snowmobile's potential drama!
@teagan.d155
@teagan.d155 2 жыл бұрын
@@Snarge22 now that I’m taller stronger and wiser hahaha, I have stayed with a 155 on my 22 khaos. No I wouldn’t go longer personally because it matches my riding style. (jumping, whips, re entries, and basically skis up everywhere I go) if anything my next track length would be a 146. However that being said, that is a lot to handle and I’m still pretty light and little so it doesn’t take much for me to react to a sled. For a bigger guy who simply wants to get where he’s going easier, a 165 would be the better option

It was mentioned below and I am curious as well. What would be the negative of the 3” compared to the 2.6 for an all around choice? Or what is the advantage of the 2.6 over the 3?
@NextLevelRidingClinics
@NextLevelRidingClinics 5 жыл бұрын
With the 3" you lose some of the responsiveness that comes from the belt drive and in some conditions it seems like the 3" is more prone to trenching.
@SnowmobileHomeMovies
@SnowmobileHomeMovies 5 жыл бұрын
Can you be more specific about what make the 3" less versatile? Nobody ever says you would be better off with a 2.25" paddle rather than a 2.6 because of versatility? Is the 3" track really bad or is it the chain case, or what?
@mynewuseddoo
@mynewuseddoo 5 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for anyone else but in my experience the 2.5"-2.6" lug height tracks seem to allow me to break the track free easier and work or set the track easier in tighter, off camber terrain. In contrast, the 3" lug height seems to act more "pushy" when applying power and trying to work or set the track in off camber and tighter terrain. That being said, I currently run a 3" 163 track. Adjusting my riding and choice of path in tight terrain has proven effective though and I do like the 3". I hope this helps and have a great new year.
@mutt2jeff
@mutt2jeff 5 жыл бұрын
@@mynewuseddoo honestly the chain case isn't that bad, and people don't mention the benefits of it. You don't blow out the chain on a chain case sled when running big power. Turbo sleds eat the quick drive system alive, so you are stuck paying $300 for a single belt, or $800 to convert to a tensioner system and then $80 a belt. The quick drive jack shaft is super fragile and will break if it gets hit. The chain case shaft is much stronger. My current sled is a 3" with quick drive, and I am seriously considering going chain case next sled
