It's a great time to get into warbirds in DCS! Especially with future growth and expansion into the Pacific Theater. Warbirds are challenging to fly, but very rewarding when you get the hang of it.
EDIT: Couple of goofs I made and didn't catch. The Fw-190 D9 is equipped with a Junkers Jumo 213 inverted V-12, not the Daimler Benz 605 that one would find in the Bf-109. Also, I meant to say 8 kilometers, and not 8,000 kilometers for the critical altitude of the Bf-109's supercharger. Easy mistake to make when you are used to feet and not the metric system. If anyone could get a Bf-109 to climb to 8,000 kilometers, I would be very impressed!

I caught that mistake, since I live in Brazil, which metric is the rule. A plane able to reach 8,000 km: that would be Elon Musk's plane!

That would be extremely impressive, given that the Karman line (which is the internationally-defined edge of space) is only at 100km of altitude, and the International Space Station is lower than 8000km (the ISS's orbit is on average *only* 400 kilometers above the Earth's surface)...

Thank you for pinning a correction on the engine in the D9 but still... DUDE. :) I got an eye twitch from hearing that. Jumo 213 is just badass, the DB was more like a nice engine. If that makes any sense. Thanks for making the video, great rundown.

@@zanaduz2018 80000KM is also more than double the height of a GEO orbit. (I just realized it's 8,000KM we were discussing, not 80,000 but I'm not removing this comment) Just to be nitpicky, it's internationally recognized that the Karman line is at 100km, but there is no internationally recognized edge of space. Even the US government can't agree, with the US DoD giving out astronauts wings at 80km, and NASA giving wings to civilians at 100km. The FAA also recognizes 80km, and the FAI and IAF even recently had discussions about changing their definitions.

Something else to consider for those that are into PVP, 99% of the time the Allies outnumber the Axis bij 2:1, 3:1.. so if you like team balance and don't want to be chasing friendlies or gang up on people 3 vs 1, pick an Axis module :D. I myself bought the 109 and the P51, but have not touched the P51 yet because of the team balance and I much prefer to be on the low player side (team balance, and more action)

My favorite is the P-51 so far. I recently purchased the P-47 and the Mosquito. Will learn them once I feel more comfortable in the P-51 which is to say once I can confidently land it which I think is surprisingly hard 😂. I will say that I flew the Mosquito in Free Flight on the Channel map a few times already and have to say that I totally love it. The cockpit is roomy and it looks like I'm actually sitting in the cockpit of the real thing - simply amazing. I love that when I look around, there are what seem like a million buttons and I love the room for the navigator. On top of everything else, the sound of the twin engines in my ears is wonderfully soothing. Warbirds are super fun, especially with the new N2 map and on the Channel map on Christmas day 🎄 with snow all around. I don't need to be engaged in a fight of any sort, just flying around in a Warbird makes me feel like I'm back in 1944, especially when I have my DCS WW2 playlist running through my headphones along with the aircraft sounds. The fact that we can catapult ourselves back in time like this, or really into any aircraft scenario each of us most enjoy is simply amazing.

P-51 is a beautiful aircraft! Pretty amazing that so many survive in flyable condition to this day! Mosquito is a great aircraft as well, and it is a lot of fun with two people in it! I will do similar flights as well from time to time, just take a aircraft up, fly around, and enjoy the flight and scenery. When the new clouds came (DCS version 2.7 I think), taking an F-16 up and cloud surfing was a lot of fun!

I’m a 2 years old VR pilot, a non-gamer in overall, I fly a couple of days a week. I do have formal education in aviation as a military avionics guy. My first love is the P-51D, the 109 kicks my butt during takeoff and landings but in the air is so well behaved and competent, a total beast, you really feel like a hunter when flying for the germans, the Anton is so fun too, so acrobatic white ridiculous fire power, a little under powered compared to the enemies, but really dangerous and resilient.

Thank you! P-51 is a good one in DCS, and is arguably the most forgiving of the ones available to learn with. I have my doubts that we'll seen any 4th gen fighters newer than the F-15/F-16, or any 5th gen for that matter. A Mig-25 or Mig-29 would be neat.

I just got the Normandy map, so of course I had to get the WWII Asset pack and the warbird I chose was the P-47. It was not an easy choice. The Mustang was strongly considered as well as the 109 and the Spitfire. From what all of the general buyers guides have said, the Jug is a good way into the warbird life. Stable, powerful, easier to get under your fingers and into the air. So far that's not my experience. Takeoff is still a challenging proposition. Landing is even worse (for me). But, like anything in DCS, I will master it like I have all the other modules. Just takes time, patients and tutorial videos from all the awesome KZfaq virtual pilots. The Normandy map is just stunning. I spent the first week just tooling around in a Jeep looking at all the scenery. It really does make you feel like you went back in time. And they've left room for expansion. Lot's of space to be developed. Liked and subbed

@DieselThunderAviation 10 ай бұрын
Thanks, glad you enjoy the videos! Ugra Media did a great job on the Normandy map! If your getting into warbirds, the Mustang and the Jug are the more forgiving ones for taxi, takeoff, and landing. The Mustang in my opinion has the best ground handling qualities with the steerable tailwheel. It'll take some practice, but it is very satisfying when you reach the point to takeoff consistently and nail those landings!

@@DieselThunderAviation Truer words have never been printed. I have taxi/takeoff pretty much down on the Jug but landing is proving a bit harder for me. The Mustang is next on the list. @DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation 10 ай бұрын
Gentle inputs and speed management are key to setting up a good landing. That and learning to let her land when she wants to. If you'd like to learn the Mustang, you can either do the free two week trial (assuming you are on standalone DCS, not the Steam version), or just hop into the TF-51 training variant of the Mustang that comes with DCS. The TF-51 handles the exact same as the P-51, just does not have the ability to mount any guns or weapons, and also lacks the K-14 gunsight. The Spitfire and Bf-109 are great aircraft but are a lot harder to takeoff and land.

@@DieselThunderAviation Thx for the tips. All those little bits of info add up over time and make me a much better virtual pilot. I tend to fly on the hamfisted side and that's no good for landing. Also, I tweaked my curve on my stick and pedals so they weren't so twitchy. That helps a bunch!

I'm coming over to DCS warbirds from IL2 GB and I've been totally won over by the proper engine modeling and high fidelity cockpits. I started out with the spitfire which is still my favorite to fly, and recently picked up the 109K4 along with the new Normandy map during the sale. I really enjoy both, but I mainly fly the spit as I like to build my skills up one plane at a time, and I just love the crazy maneuvers you can pull in the spit. Hopefully I'll have given the K4 the love it's due by the time the F4U comes out, because I won't be able to help myself diving into my favorite fighter from the pacific theater! A quick point on the clipped wing spit, my understanding is that the reduced wing area hurts the turning performance as well as its climbing due to decreased lift, but improved roll rate and speed because of the lower moment of inertia and reduced drag respectively. I could be wrong about the turning though, as I can't recall my source, and some lazy googling isn't yielding much that says anything about the turn rates directly. It just seems like in theory taking wing away could only hurt turn rate rather than help it.

I flew IL2 in the early 2000's, but never in multiplayer. I liked it alright but never stuck with it. When I tried it in DCS I was initially put off by how hard it seemed but kept at it. Absolutely love them now. Really looking forward to the F-4U as well! Regarding the clipped wing, I did some more reading on it. You're correct in thinking that the turn performance takes a hit. Turn radius increases, and turn speed decreases. Level flight above 20,000 also takes a small speed hit due to the increased angle of attack.

If its a late A model FW190 why is the Ata pressure low as was the case of the very early ones. Correct Ata pressure would increase the performance of the aircraft.
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation 3 ай бұрын
That would certainly increase performance. Pretty sure the 190A lacks an intercooler (much like the Bf-109), which limits how much boost the engine can run before the intake air is too hot and the engine starts detonating.

I think you really have to go PvP for warbirds right now in DCS as the AI is super bad, omniscient and cheats like crazy. It's a shame they picked random warbirds from all over the war, with that focus on late war for the American and German birds, where the allies really have some serious advantages. It's going to be even worse in the pacific. In a way I'm sad that we get a mid war Spitfire vs late war 109's, gives people the wrong idea in some ways but it wouldn't be fun PvP seal clubbing in a MkXIV.

What really bugs me is that there are 2 U.S Warbirds, and 2 German, 2 British, a Russian, but no Zero from Japan... WTF There might be more Warbirds than that it's just all I can remember off the top of my head. P51 P47, Spitfire and that two engine thing, FW and BF, I something.

You got most of them there. Currently 2 U.S. (P-47 and P-51), 2 British (Spitfire and Mosquito), 3 German (Bf-109, Fw-190 A8, and Fw-190 D9), and 1 Soviet (I-16). Eight totale that are currently flyable. Known to be under development are three more U.S. (F4U Corsair, F6F Hellcat, and A-1H Skyraider), and one more Soviet (La-7).

Whole WW2 project within DCS is a consequence of a undelivered KickStarter campaign called Normandy 1944, so basicly current lineup of warbirds apart from P-51 (which tunrned 10 years old last year) is ED fulfilling someone else's promises. I'm still very impressed by the quality of each module and looking forward to more of them. By the way one of the original Normandy 1944 aircraft to be developed was Me-210 (I wonder if it's still in the making).

I’m not complaining of course. I love that there is a selection. It just doesn’t seem like WWII without the Zero though. Giving the U.S even more of a selection without even one Japanese seems a little messed up to me. But I guess they know what they’re doing.

I think the A6M (whatever variant) is a poor matchup for the F4U or the F6F. They'd be better off including the Ki-84 Hayate for that. Of, if they are hell bent on including an A6M, include the F4F or something.
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation 8 ай бұрын
F4F would be cool to fly in DCS one day for sure! For the Zero, it may be an underdog compared to the Corsair and Hellcat, but they did serve for the entirety of the war. Ki-84 only saw action from late 44 to the end of the war. So far we only know of the AI Zero coming with the Corsair, can't help but wonder if there are other assets coming that haven't been revealed yet?

@@DieselThunderAviation I see what you're saying, but there's a big performance gap between A6M/Ki-43 and F4U/F6F. A Ki-61 or Ki-84 would be a much better matchup. Most of the planes we have in DCS are late war already. I hope they flesh out the Pacific Roster, but I also would've liked for a Ju88 to become available for Normandy.
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation 8 ай бұрын
I guess we'll see how it performs. It was said that a well flown Zero could be a challenge for Corsairs and Hellcats. I certainly hope they expand into the Pacific Theater, because no one else is currently. For Normandy, did you mean the Ju-87 Stuka? Because I fairly sure we have AI Ju-88 in the sim already, unless you meant player flyable.

@@DieselThunderAviation I think the A6M faces the same challenge against the F4U/F6F as the Spitfire Mk.V back in the day against the FW190's. It could outturn it, but that was it. With regards to the Ju88, I meant a player flyable one. We need a twin engine Axis bird and the Ju88 was the most produced twin engine German airplane. Only makes sense to have that one.

26:00 "cook the bearings" what exactly do yo mean by this?
@DieselThunderAviation
@DieselThunderAviation 5 ай бұрын
It's an inherent problem with radial engines and their crankshaft bearings. Short and sweet of it is that they are not very tolerant of being windmilled (prop driving the engine). There are a few ways to prevent it, usually by making sure there's enough power being made by the engine to not be windmilled.

@@DieselThunderAviation there's actually another funfact to it: universally, it's written like "La", but this isn't possible with ilyushin, since it would just look like "II" - that's why people not using the russian alphabet, like former eastern germany, used "IL" on their russian planes, to make it readable. but this lead to a misunderstanding, so eastern german folks say "ee ell", whilst pronouncing every other manufacturer correctly.^^

I would say that the warbirds are more challenging to fly but are fairly simple with systems and weapons. The more modern fighters are easy to fly but come with a more complicated weapon system. I personally like the challenge of the warbirds, though enjoy a lot of the other aircraft available in DCS. If there is any advice I could give, it is to pick the missions that you like to do, versus trying to decide on a particular airplane. Choosing the mission set will lead you to the aircraft you'd likely most enjoy.
