I have been on quite the watercolor journey in 2021, and I have much to say about it. One thing I realized, some of the brushes I was sure I just had to have, aren't that special. A couple that I never heard of, are game changers. One thing to always keep in mind, art supplies are very personable. What works for me, might not be for everyone. But if you are struggling with watercolor like I was, might not hurt to change some things up.
Brushed mentioned.

Totally agree with the silver brand, over hyped and over priced. Princeton velvet and aqua elite I have many of and LOVE!

Interesting review. I was very surprised by your reaction with the silver black velvets as just about everyone else just loves them (myself included). I think what sets them apart for me is they hold a lot of paint and water so I don't have to keep going to get more paint, but they hold such fine point even for a large size. I find I can do a hole painting with my size 10 brush and still be able to get details like fur texture or fine lines with it, so I think their great if you like to paint details. I also really like the Princeton Neptune brushes too!

Im an amateur hobbiest and the silver black velvet hands down are unlike anything else. they are the best brushes and move water and pigment completely differntly! I will say, don't waste your money on liners and riggers-- stick with the rounds. Silver does make a sz 6 quill (its big) that is synthetic that is also exceptional and like $7 on Amazon.

As you noted preference is an individual thing. I am a beginner, started painting in February of this year. I love it and usually paint 2-4 hours every day. Like many beginners I bought the best I could find, real sable. princeton, handmade bamboo brushes, etc. All good brushes. However I recently bought the Silver Black Velvet and it has made a major difference in my skills! If you are an expert artist who has total water control and lots of experience with watercolor, you might not notice the difference. For me Silver Black Velvet brushes are the best on the market today!

@@HerHuntress I think I may be a chronic beginner. But it does not really matter to me because the pure joy of playing in the paints is enough, lol. BTW I appreciate your site and you sharing your expertise.

@@sherryfurr9115 I looked it up immediately and was really sad the hair isn't all synthetic 😢 Is there a substitute you can recommend?

@@user-urg4gf0d5 There are lots of brush reviews here on You Tube that can help you. I hesitate to recommend one because I am such a beginner.

I bought a set of silver black velvets 4 years ago and didn’t use them much. Recently though, I started painting florals and picked them up again. There is no other brush that I own that will give me the dancy whispy lines that these brushes will. This is just my own observation for whatever it’s worth. We all have our own style, experience and subject matter, so will have different preferences.

I love silver black velvet brushes! I’m surprised you can’t see the difference in them and the others. They are a combination of synthetic and squirrel and just work very well. As far as quill brushes - they are okay but not everyone loves a quill brush for all things. The quills I own are great for large washes and paintings. But for my smaller paintings I much prefer a round. The quills are too big and bulky for about 90% of my painting. Each of us is different and paint differently. People really need to try and decide which they prefer.

I hate the Silver Black Velvet brushes. I wish I never wasted my money on them. I have four and never reach for them. For sale to anyone who wants to try them! BTW - It's her video, so she can only express her own opinion. Princeton makes a far better brush for about half the price. Artists don't have to starve to make art.

You can do a nice painting with any brush, but a lovely brush makes it a joy to the senses. I have just one Silver Black Velvet, a sword striper, and I like it a lot. But I do love my real squirrel mops like you, and I agree the Neptune is the best synthetic squirrel brush. I also wore out an Aqua Elite size 8 (I paid about the same as for the Neptunes). As far as brushes that are worth the money, I agree the Princetons are great, and my absolute favorites are Rosemary & Company. Yes they have to be shipped from the UK but if you buy a number of brushes it's not bad. (Long handles increase the shipping rate). They are comparable to DaVinci and Escoda brushes but for soooo much less money.

They are like bullets. So many to choose from, different applications and jobs, but some work better than others. So, we collect, buy, and try. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

To equate Princeton Select budget brushes to the top tier Princeton Aqua Elite is one thing. But, calling Fuumuui “Fancy” is downright blasphemous! Knowing the characteristics of each brush and/or series of brushes is essential to any review. Usually, the more expensive a brush is, the harder they are to control in practical watercolor use. Too much water and lack of consistent form can hinder the inexperienced. Less expensive, less thirsty, more snappy brushes are easier to control and better choices for students and beginners. But, they are also not likely to produce extraordinary art pieces either. Having said that, brush choice and preferences is different for every person. As they can be costly and a large investment, do research and educate yourself on the characteristics of a particular series of brushes before committing to a disappointing purchase.

If you had a size 12 round Silver Black Velvet, you might like the brand better. Also, I never buy brushes in sets, just what I need.
