My favorite way to do white is actually to start with the vallejo white, and instead of thinning it with water I thin it with liquitex white ink instead. Really gets the best out of both of them!

The short version of "why is all white paint terrible" is that titanium white, the pigment used, is the kind of molecule that tangles into clumps easily. With a lot of grinding you can break these up, but that's one of the main things that makes paint cost more, so many companies don't bother. The other white pigment, zinc white, doesn't clump but is *very* transparent. Useful if you like glazing light colored skin, otherwise stick with titanium white.

I'm a big fan of Vallejo and the Army Painter's white. Especially with a brush. Citadel's whites are like painting with concrete. I don't mind taking a little time to shake and mix any paint, but I don't want to have to struggle every time I want to use the paint. Especially as I only paint now and then and White Scar will solidify into mush between painting sessions and need all that time to blend back into a usable format. Easier just to give a Vallejo or the AP a short shake and get right into it.

I can really recommend any heavy body acrylic (titanium) white, e.g. from Schminke or Golden. They are so highly pigmented that you can thin them a lot and they still cover really well and stay smooth.
@SparkSovereign
@SparkSovereign Жыл бұрын
Emphatically seconded! Put a dollop on your wet palette, mine the bottom of it for thinned paint. Heavy body paints can't mechanically separate the way fluid paints can, so it stays as well mixed as it was in the factory.

A comprehensive test line-up of white paint is just what the doctor ordered - good work all around. For myself, I admit I am a big believer in Duncan's tried-and-true color theory when it comes to white: base coat the model in off-white and use pure white for highlights. I find this relieves a lot of the frustration with white color schemes. There's a range of off-white and very light grey paints which at the very worst still go on more easily than most white paints.
@redscope897
@redscope897 Жыл бұрын
The reason for all white paint being difficult is because it is all made from Titanium power which gives it the white colour. The problem is titanium causes the paint to be come chalky and clumb up. So the only real differences is how they mix it with other chemicals. To thin and it does not cover well to thick and it ends up like cottage cheese. We also have to take into account how long it has sat on the shelf. Mixing as you did avoid that problem but it is what most people complain about that the paint will seperate far more than other colours. Even from pot to pot by the same company can be quite different.

Liquitex inks are intended for airbrushes, spatter, or dripping into crevices. I wish you would have tried soft body acrylic, which would have been more comparable to the others in the list. The heavy body acrylic can be watered down and goes on super creamy. It's great for mixing.

White is a bit of an oddball for me. While I usually stick to Pro-Acryl (and the Bolt Titanium White is really good), I tend to prefer artist grade acrylics over miniature paint company products for white. Golden SoFlat is a fantastic white, but my favorite by far goes to Golden Heavy Body Acrylic. It's a giant tube you'll ever only need to buy 1 of, its a bit thick from the tube but thins like a dream and goes on silky smooth with great coverage and no streaking. I have not tried it through an airbrush as I just use Daler & Rowney FW or Liquitex white inks through the airbrush as they work wonderful.

The Tamiya white is not going to stand up will with a brush but it will be probably the best of the bunch through an air brush, it can stand being thinned more without spidering, will flow better and give a less speckly finish, if you use laquer thinners it will be much more resilient too, just got to put up with the nasty laquer thinner smell and side effects if the ventilation isn't up to snuff (headaches)

I still have pots of paint on my table from 20+ years ago that still work perfectly fine. their white paint has never given me any issues and it thins down really well. i did try moving over to citadel colours in the early 90s and i was disappointed, i tried again the the mid 2000's and felt the same disappointment in their products. Army Painter seems to have some nice paints and i fined myself adding more and more of their ranges to my collection when i have the opportunity. I may try their white to see how it compares.

Since I don't own a vortex, mixing it back turned into a real hassle for me so in the end I gave up and bought army painters matt white. Although it feels better to work with it, I'm still not sold on it. I'll probably get one or two more alternatives - Vallejo looks like a good buy for me, perhaps also Duncans paint. Thanks for the video. You tested Liquitex ink (an art store product) and recommended it for airbrush; I recommend Windsor & Newton artist grade Titanium White for brush work (also an art store product. ) It's not cheap, but comes in a big tube which I don't think I'll ever have to purchase again. It's very thick, but it's HIGHLY pigmented so it takes thinning very well, and the base is very smooth and creamy and feels good on the brush. The smoothness comes from the use of Titanium pigment (hence the name,) and therefore please read all labels and practice adequate safety measures when using any heavy metal paints.

I used White Scar from Citadel, White (001) from Vallejo Model Color (from early 2000s, old bottle, old name) and recently Titanium White from Liquitex Professional Heavy Body Acrylic (from a tube). I am OK with White Scar, like the Vallejo one and surprised by the titanium white from Liquitex. The coverage from the titanium white is the best from the three, in my opinion. However, the Vallejo one I have the feeling that it goes off the brush rather smoothly, more then the others do. You have to thin all three down with water, because all of them are a bit gloopy/thick. When I started painting in the early 90s I only know Citadel and Revell Enamel paints. As far as I remember the hobby stores at that time in Vienna had only those paints. Then I made a long brake and when I started again in 2020/2021 I was a bit overwhelmed by the big variety of different paints which are available today (or at least I just did not know back then). I still use mainly Citadel paints, mixed with some Vallejo and Army Painter, and recently some Liquitex ones. Oh and I use a gloss varnish from Revell, as I realised that they now have acrylic paints too. Maybe I will try some of the paints from Revell in the future.

Liquitex the worst white paint I used: GW Ceramite White. Already chunky out of the pot... btw, you should compare acrylics both thinned by water and acrylic medium. Most brands don't deliver good results, when thinned with water. Water breaks paint into pigment and medium, while diluting. medium dilutes without breaking up the paint.

I have a lot of tamiya paints from making tamiya model cars, since theyre alcohol based acrylic paints my experience of using them with a brush is quirky. You have to let your layers really cure otherwise your brush strokes can rub off or affect your layers underneath especially if you thinned your next layer down with some of their X-20A thinner (which is basically just 70% isopropyl alcohol I believe, I just use isopropyl as my thinning substitute now). If you brush very lightly you can avoid messing up your layers but Ive had mixed success. I pretty much use the tamiyas for airbrushing only. Im not an experienced painter / model builder though, thats just been my experience with them. Tamiya also makes a RANGE of very nice matte, flat, satin, or smooth finishes for a variety of colors, so they have flat white, gloss white, etc. and they REALLY do make some good texture and contrast for your parts. I also love using Tamiya's metallic colors for painting my war mini's armor and stuff. it works great as its own layer used alongside normal acrylic paints and they have a lot of different types of metallics. all their paints are great for airbrushing, many different textures, and metallics. EDIT: I have learned Tamiya makes a "paint retarder" which is supposed to make the paint more workable with a paintbrush, makes it way easier to use with brush by the looks of it.

The problem with white paints are they are either too thin and don't cover enough or they are too thick and leave a grainy / uneven surface. It's very hard to get the perfect white paint consistency. Have to be really precise with the thinning. This is why AK interactive is the best white for me. There is no paint that will give you a smooth one coat coverage with white. So what's the next best thing? Two coats that give a bright white colour and doesn't need thinning. That's Ak interactive from my experience. For inks and airbrush - Liquitex titanium white ink.

I’m a big fan of Kimera’s White myself. It takes a bit of practice to get the correct consistency but I do have good luck with it.

I can recommend Amsterdam acrylic White Ink for airbrushing (thinned), it comes in a 100ml bottle with a mixing ball inside, it's fairly economic and doesn't clump. I've used it for edge highlighting but not base coating and I think it's prone to chalkiness but again, I haven't base coated with it (The single worst is Ceramite White from Citadel which is the true horror paint, not White Scar). The best white isn't white. That's the thing. You can't go up from white, you can only reapply it after a wash or similar filter. Corax White is a neutral darker white (aka very light grey) which is smoother to work with and allows you to go up in brightness. It also clumps but I've added some vallejo thinner and a mixing ball which has kept it alive and well with no problems. The other 'white' is to go either cold or warm white, which means having a slight bit of blue or red/brown in it which changes the paint property and makes it easier to paint with. You can also use beige instead, in fact instead of applying 3-5 layers of white, you can use something like Rakarth Flesh as an in-between single layer and it doesn't have to be full opaque coverage, it only has to make the transition easier. Alternatively if you need to go from black to white, you can use zandi dust as the in-between. Another trick is to use less layers of white and then use a grey, red or blue wash (like the new citadel shades) all over, then apply a single layer of white where you want to build it up again. That way the recesses won't have an inconsistent white color but look properly shaded. So to anyone looking for *THE* magic white paint out there, it doesn't exist. A rattlecan or patient airbrushing is the only way to get a consistent, opaque and flat layer and even then, you *need* to repaint it with something else to get a repair color for when you make mistakes. Don't paint a white army. There's a reason ultramarines are the standard.

Unfortunately you guys missed out on my personal favorite brand (both for quality and for their texan roots, because I'm a proud Texan): Reaper. For both price and quality, I've always been a fan of Reaper whites. They've a few, and my personal go to is Dragon White.

Should def this tamiya with x20a thinner 60/40. They brush paint amazingly once you get the thinning down.

You say that it is an ‘age old’ problem, that isn’t necessarily true. The issue was largely manufactured, with good reason, because the best, most opaque, white pigments were classed as harmful and banned. I’m in no way saying that the ban is a bad thing, quite the opposite, just pointing out that this is not an ‘age old’ problem because we used to have white paints that were opaque and covered well.

That's strange, regarding scale 75. It's my go to over the others. That is, until I discovered liquitex fluid basic acrylics. I was looking for a good white for airbrush and pick some up on a whim. It requires no thinning and little thinning for airbrush. Single coat coverage via brush. It surprised me a lot.

might not have been a bad idea to crack open the paint pen and see how well the stuff inside goes on with a brush? maybe find out what they use and why it seams to work so well? Could be worth adding an empty reusable paint pen to the toolkit?

Well Ciara when I paint anything that is meant to be White, I start with Wolf Grey and paint it two ways , vertical and horizontal - that way you elliminate the stripey finish - then over that I use Vallejo Air White.

I'm both a figure painter and an aircraft/vehicle modeler. I use rattle cans for primer and undercoats, but exclusively brush otherwise. I've also find that Citadel whites and Celestia Grey "go bad" after 6-8 weeks, but are o.k. when they are fresh. I'm really struggling right now with Hataka Insignia White, that is supposed to be "optimized" for brush painting. It must have separated in the dropper bottle, otherwise it's ridiculously thin, bubbly and gives blotchy cover. And it stinks like varnish! Just awful. Tamiya is my go-to right now, or White Scar if the pot is good, but they're a big ask on large surfaces. I think I'll check out ~Army Painter, Valejo (LOVE their weathering products) and Two Thin Coats. Really helpful video. Cheers!

You didn't cover War Colours white. I'm not sure that it would stand up to or be on par with some of the others, but the line, in my opinion, is at least as good as Scale 75. They definitely deserve to be in a comparison video. Still, a great video. Out of all the lines covered, I'm a fan of pro-acryl's white, but I feel like to get any good amount of coverage with white, you have to thin it to a wash and just resign yourself to doing five to seven coats.

Seconded. Warcolours is the literal smoothest white you will use. Warcolours are different to other paints (gel medium) but hot damn they NEVER separate and give smooth finishes when you know how to work them. 100% recommended for the aspiring paint nerd who wants a new toy.

Tamiya's range of paints are PERFECT for spraying. I don't like them for brushing, they have a tendency to dry too fast for the brush work which leaves streaks. But since they're iso based instead of water based, they're GREAT for airbrush since you get almost instant drying on the surface. The Army Painter matte white is my favorite to brush on but you need a wet pallet imo just so you can really control how thick the layers are. .

I've heard that AK 3rd gen white is really good, up there with pro acryl. I will say that I love my pro acryl a lot, probably my favorite paint brand, but the streaks things is real. I've found their white won't leave a clean coverage if you don't just stick to single brush strokes to put your first layer on
