I always figured it was Fletcher who took the music folder. Forcing his musicians into "do or die" scenarios that pit them against each other seems like his bag.

so glad you guys loved this movie, this movie is not about music and musicians, it is about the pain, discipline, and sacrifice needed to reach virtuoso level in whatever field you choose

I was speechless just like Devin. This movie is unbelievable. People talk about action or horror movies being loaded with suspense and tension but they have nothing on the dynamic between Neiman and Fletcher. Fletcher's volatile and unpredictable nature is nothing short of terrifying. When I first saw this I was in pure awe of J.K. Simmons. His character is one that you hate to love but he makes the movie and just chews the scenery the whole time. I've only watched this film twice because I like to keep it reserved for occasions when I need a really awesome film to escape into. Your reactions were on point and safe to say that everyone felt the same way you did.

2014 was a great year of films/documentaries. Besides this one: Boyhood, Foxcatcher, Birdman, Grand Budapest Hotel, Rich Hill & American Sniper.

Whiplash hits you like a hurricane. Brilliant filmmaking. JK Simmons commands the screen.

Loved this movie. That ending was great especially when he didn't quit then showed his brilliance.

Growing up, miles teller was involved with acting, was president of his high school's drama club, and played alto saxophone, drums, piano and guitar. He also played baseball competitively and had dreams of turning professional.

2014 was a GREAT year for movies: this, Birdman, Chef, Nightcrawler, The Drop, Interstellar, Edge of Tomorrow, Gone Girl, and I could go on. Any of those are worth checking out.

Another extremely intriguing take to denote on top of the countless other devices and meanings: during the final scene when Andrew’s father is looking in awe through the theater doors, pay attention to the performer’s phenomenal facial expression- is he astonished at simply how good Andrew truly is at his craft, or is he in complete disarray realizing that Fletcher “won,” and that Andrew technically fell back into his arms, regardless of both the pros and cons of leaders like Fletcher.

And then you realize the entire movie and ending is about creating thought provoking thoughts as to wether Fletchers strategies were reasonable. There is no doubt Fletcher pushed him above and beyond but was how he went about his teachings ok/necessary? Beautiful.

This ending is so good because in the end, in trying to his own thing, Andrew gave Fletcher what he wanted most. The pride of producing a revolutionary artist. But the satisfaction comes in knowing he did it his own way.

"There are no two words in the English language more harmful than: good job" I slightly disagree. I would add "unearned" in between "two words" in that sentence and that would be my philosophy. Fun Fact: The film was shot in 19 days. Drummer Boy Fact: Miles Teller, who has played the drums since he was 15, received blisters on his hands due to the vigorous, unconventional style of jazz drumming. Some of his blood was on the drumsticks and the drum set as a result. During the more intense practice scenes, the director wouldn't yell "cut!" so that Miles Teller would keep drumming until he exhausted himself. Landing Blows Fact: For the slapping scene, J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller filmed several takes with Simmons only miming the slap. For the final take, Simmons and Teller decided to film the scene with a real, genuine slap. This is the take that is in the film. J.K. Simmons suffered two cracked ribs when Miles Teller tackled him during the last two days of shooting. Simmons managed to continue working despite his injury.

I bet they got the idea for this film from listening to the Buddy Rich Coach/Bus audio where buddy rich gives his band a right thraping.

SHE totally missed the intent of the main guy. He did not bring connolly in to be a "snake" he brought him in to be an INCENTIVE to the protagonist. COMPETITION BRINGS FORTH THE BEST IN SOMEONE WHO IS DESTINED TO BE GREAT. And MOST are NOT GREAT. Those who are to BE GREAT do not DO NOT say "oh my goodness i'm bleeding" Oh my gosh it's 2 am" Oh my this is hard" THAT attitude will GUARANTEE THAT NOBODY BUT YOUR IMMEDIATE FAMILY WILL KNOW YOU EVER EXISTED. History has NO PROBLEM forgetting who you are. (I am speaking in generalities)

I think the best movie of the past 20 years. Takes u through all emotions, u live hate disgust respect stunned abused change all ur thoughts, on different characters, throughout the movie!! The final scene, Andrew, hits what Fletcher wanted, a person impossible of discouragement. Fletcher goes from threatening him, then treating him like a student, then calls him by his name, then calls him by his first name, then gives him the smile!

The whole movie is really good. However the ending was next level. You could not have a better ending. Just astonishing performances.

As a drummer I love this movie and I don't think most people get Fletcher's motivation and tactics for getting the most out of his musicians. I can tell you I was in a studio for 10 hours playing the same song over and over again to get what the producer wanted out of me.

Movie endings don’t get much better than this.

Laughing at someone being bullied and yelled at is not the reaction I could ever had expected for this movie. But at least I heard the laughter clearly, in contrast to the dialogue of the movie.
