I just close my eyes and go for it! Lol Seriously, one of the reasons I love songs like this is, the art of improvisation is almost nonexistent these days. People are afraid to put themselves out there. They’re afraid they’ll make a mistake. One of my favorite guitarists is knopfler. Listen to him live, he makes mistakes, but he plays through them. That, is what makes a player. My first statement is half serious. I learned my fretboard decades ago. There’s certain songs like this, where I really do just close my eyes and jam. Play what you feel. Let it go. Talk to the people through your notes. If you mess up, play through it. The ABB did this too….you can hear the mistakes in the filmore album, and that’s what makes it special. Ok, this old man will shut up now……. Great video brother.

By the time the ABB released their first album I had been immersed in the Dead's early albums working very hard to understand what Jerry was playing and often trying to sort out the counterpoint leads between Jerry and Bobby. Whipping Post was my very first favorite ABB long jam. By then Live Dead had been worn out a couple of times. Some of my neighbors thought I needed to be locked in an asylum because of playing albums over and over.

Chord progression is A major > Bm > C major over the solos. Listen closely and you’ll hear the major 3rd in the A chord.

Yup! Found that out after😳. But in all honesty, the soloing approach is still the same. Next time I’ll listen to the original instead of a live performance

I believe the A major chord is the V/IV (secondary dominant) of D, the IV chord…the key of the song is still A minor. Why they did that? I have no clue. LoL

Great job my friend..I'm an ear player with some theoretical knowledge. This video helped so much, I am at the point where I know my shortcomings and adding flavor to my solos is my focus now. I do have to learn this number for a new project and you saved me a lot of time getting the structure and vibe of this solo.you broke it down perfectly for us dumbasses, thank you so much for your efforts.

One of my favorite songs... learned Dickey's full 6 minute live at the Fillmore solo basically note-for-note because it was the only time they played that section. Thanks for the insight provided here.

Just stumbled across this video. Thanks for sharing! Great lesson! Noticed in the intro you didn’t mention Jack Pearson, arguably one of the most talented guitarists ABB ever had. Although his time was just a couple of years because of bad bouts with tinnitus from the volume they played at, his solos on their songs were magical! Everyone should check him out...it’ll make you wanna practice more LOL! ✌🏻🎼🎸

Listen to studio version as well as multiple Allman live versions on KZfaq. Very apparent on Greg's organ, as well as guitars. 1st chord A major, B minor to C.

When I played bass on this in my old band I’d basically riff on the Am scale… now I’m gonna try the GMaj scale on my LP… I have no idea what I’m doing.. but I think I’m gonna have fun…!👍🏼 Thanks..!

Thanks for this lesson. Have been playing W.P. since it first came out on vinyl. Learned Dickey's lead note for note off the recording. Though played the Eb note in the scale I never before recognized it for what it is and the effect it has.

Try the verse chord progression as A major instead of Am7. That’s how Warren Haynes said it’s played and jow I learned it from Marty Schwartz. Sounds great that way .

I always heard the 'main riff' being two guitar parts: one being a repetitive a, b, c, bend up from b to c back to b, and the other being double stops on the B+G strings starting from A+C#, B+D, C+E.

A minor pentatonic seems to work pretty good man....I mean. I’m learning this song now and it seems to be in A minor using the G pattern.

Could there be any benefit to think B Phrygian in terms of key of G major, Am7 and Bm7... cause the C is Am cept the bass yanked it...and noodling between D and D#(=Eb) for a major 3rd rub against the B... if you are thinking Bs is good landing zones?

I don’t have roots down to muscle memory yet. So even if I were to want to play A roots in that g maj, I’d have to try to. Basically what I’m asking is how do you practice getting roots down muscle memory? AND when playing the Gmaj, should we use G root as home?

Actually, I also have a question, now that I think about it: why does that E-flat work in the G-major scale? Is there something about this progression? I was recently looking at another solo done over a G-C alternating progression-the soloist uses the E-flat as a passing tone in the G-major scale & it sounds like it belongs there. PS: I also posed this question to Sean before I watched your video. The question seems more apropos here. :)

In theory It doesn't work, it is an outside note, It is the blue note in the A Blues scale.The A blues scale works over the progression.

Well when I studied the song, the chord progression that I looked at was A Bm C… that is the 2 3 4 chord of the Key of G…. Check out my Dorian Masterclass

It is an A major in 11/8 time. I am a long time ABB fan, and if you watch the video from 1-16-82 @ Florida Field in Gainesville w/ Dan Toler and Dickie. Betts faces the camera during Dangerous Dan's solo and clearly strumming an A major......

What key if the chord progression is AMaj BMin CMaj BMin ?

By definition there is a key change. I originally thought this was Amin to B yada yada , but here we indeed do have the A Major .... I would say Key of A for up until the C and then a brief key change to C or G if you want to really get deep and back to A, I can talk about this on my next live feed. But in this case the Soloing still works for the A dorian scale.

It’s still A minor. The song ends on a A minor chord. I believe it’s A min9. The A May chord is the secondary dominant of D. V/IV

Poppik81 Quads. Ian is a Quadrasaurus rex. Guitars contours weren't made for that kind of leg fortitude. (FAQ response- He just rests it on his leg and tilts the neck up for the camera. But quadrasaurus rex is the better explainantion)
