Here am I, 72 and a retired teacher, having just received one of the best of informative, entertaining and interesting lessons I have ever seen, given or received. This video is so good that I venture to suggest that Ger Buckley be awarded forthwith, the Irish equivalent of Living National Treasure.

This gentleman is probably my favorite guest yet. The knowledge and skill was phenomenal.

And this is why America needs apprenticeships . Young men learning a pure trade or profession.

I need about a thousand episodes with Ger. My goodness that was fantastic.

This man and others like him are hero's. My uncle was a cooper. There are some old school methods that modern technologies and machinery just cannot and should not replace!!

Thats what you get from a master. He knows exactly what, where, when and why of every single detail. Out-freaking-standing gentleman. Bastards its not enough to fill me with knowledge and whiskey, but now envy as well.

Beyond cool, thus far I've visited 40 distilleries in Scotland, 6 in Kentucky, 5 in Texas and 8 in California and very rarely do you get a "behind the scenes" look at the details (beyond the standard tour) of how whisky is made.

I could listen to that man talk for hours.

Only last month Middleton distillery added its first cooper in 40 years.

That was an amazing episode. You should have him visit Austin to create a giant barrel for a special edition Texas whisk(e)y.

Being a history/ detail freak....this is by far my favorite!! That’s because of all the work that you gentlemen put into these! And having a background in video production....in the 70’s.....I know, ancient history.....I understand your labor of love!

There is sp much passion in this episode, from the barrel maker who loves his craft to Daniel sniffing the barrel and seems to find the barrel notes of the whiskey. There is something in the eyes that makes this special!

I so appreciate the old school ways the masters of woodworking used to use, i still have my dads and granddads old tools in my workshop. Great Vid guys! The best part was around the 17m mark talking about the education, interest and the knowledge that contributes to the overall experience of Whisky. Ger nailed it and yes, very cool for him to acknowledge you guys and what you contribute to the whisky world and I have to agree. Been watching you guys for a while now as I've only recently ventured into Scotch. One of my mentors suggested your links maybe 2 months or so ago and having looked at lots of others, you guys do it better than anyone by adding episodes such as this. What I enjoy most is you pack a lot into short segments that keep me interested and thirsting for more. Great job as always! .... So the hot new thing is whisky I-V's Daniel? I did smile a few times. But mostly, I was intently studying a Master Cooper at his finest, who is most generous with his pride and history. I truly enjoyed his knowledge from his Historic past, AND that he is "still is learning to this day," was being absorbed 100% like the devils cut by his guests (and, eventually, us.) I will never drink a drop of Jamison's whiskey without this Master's influence in my enjoyment of this whiskey in my thoughts. Cheers one and all.

What a wonderful thing to watch! A fifth generation Master Craftsman showing us just a tiny piece of his vast knowledge of cooperage

When I toured the wild turkey distillery I learned about the smell of the bourbon coming from the wooden barrels. The way the wood is treated to maximize the flavor of the bourbon. Subscribing to your channel reinforces the knowledge I have obtained through the years. But I am amazed by hearing other people's analysis on whiskey. How there's varying views. But over all. It's positive and like myself, take several different whiskeys and mix till I get a spirit that my palate appreciates. Or, add different charcoal filtering methods and use a whiskey that could use some help in reaching its potential. Now there have been mistakes. But to me, it's all about educating one's self during this learning curve. Like cooking. Thanks for your enthusiastic energy making these informative videos. "A friend in drink is a friend indeed".

Absolutely awesome and a very knowledgable video guys. As an Irish Bartender here in Ireland I have learned so much from your vlogs. Many years ago Publicans (Pub Proprietors) used to offer their local clientele a Christmas Drink. It was either a Pint of the customers choice (their regular tipple) or a Small One. (A Spirit mainly Whiskey or Brandy.) Most guys jumped at the chance to get a Whiskey. The greedy ones opted for Brandy. Because it was more expensive. Now a days the pouring Whiskey (Known brands) is cheaper than the Pints. Guys used to buy each other a Drink for xmas. Again the Greedy ones would say " ah sure give us a Short". When the Publican offered the same choice here was the reaction,,,," hey Mick

I’ve been dreading & avoiding a trip to England & Ireland with my wife ( second gen immigrant) to reconnect with her family there. Long time drinker; first time poster. Congrats guys on another great video. Have enjoyed all the Ireland trip content. They've all been entertaining but better still have transformed my understanding of what goes into making whiskey. This latest video was my favourite so far. It blew my mind to realise a 5th generation Cooper still makes the barrels, all by eye, and it isn't freakin robots with lasers on there heads.

I don't know why the algorithm brought this to me today, but I am blessed by an amazing teacher, a master cooper, and a heckuva gentleman. What an incredible experience that must have been!

What an incredible blend of arts and history, the nautical speak coming from being in the Navy and needing barrels for aging/keeping sustenance and the tools eminatimg from carpentry, engineering tooos and blacksmithing too, only achieved after thousands of years of tooling. Incredible

Absolutely fantastic video. Lots of little snippets that I’ll be using when I’m doing distillery tours. I particularly loved hearing how Ger still visits cooperages and tries to learn all the time. My favourite bit was Daniels reaction when he got to make the “mark” on the barrel. I had the same reaction the day the guys in the filling store at Tomatin let me hammer in a bung.

Brilliant to see someone who has such incredible skill and passion for his craft! Really rare nowadays!

The years he has under his belt and when he talked about the rivet then quoted "would you like to see that" the child like excitement in his voice shows he loves everything about his job
